An atheist group is running ads on two dozen New York City buses to raise "atheist pride'' among nonbelievers.
The 12-foot-long ads have a blue background and three-foot-high white letters that proclaim "You don't have to believe in god to be a moral or ethical person."
Members of the New York City Atheists will hold a Saturday press conference to discuss the ads at Manhattan's Columbus Circle.
Spokeswoman Jane Everhart says American society is increasingly accepting of atheists and says President Obama even mentioned "nonbelievers'' in his inaugural speech.
The ad campaign wants to reassure secretive nonbelievers that "it's OK to be an atheist''
The 30-day campaign was funded by an anonymous atheist.
Since atheism is a religion, wouldn’t this be “unconstitutional” since these are city busses?
But it sure helps.
The 12-foot-long ads have a blue background and three-foot-high white letters that proclaim “You don’t have to believe in god to be a moral or ethical person.”
Atheists; Pray there is no hell...
Atheism is a religion, like bald is a hair color.
So we have N Korea building nukes, inflation on the horizon, massive unemployment, taxes going through the roof and the big news is about gay marriage and atheist clubs?
What a country....
Themes for Atheist Pride?
“We believe in nothing!”
“Alive today, worm food tomorrow!”
“This is the best you’ll ever have!”
“You can’t take it with you!”
“Can I have your stereo when you die?”
“I am my own god, even though I’m unemployed and aging badly!”
“If I was 1% off I’d be a monkey’s uncle!”
“Proud to state with 100% certainty, there is no god!”
“Atheism: an ‘ism’ concerning eigths.”
Ahhh, yea you do.
No, you don’t.
The Golden Rule is older than the invention of religion.

Courts also found people like OJ, innocent...
Yeah. I don’t have much faith in our courts either. Especially the Federal courts. Lots of hot air. No substance.
Where is their pride?
Be careful, and always remember to never let your personal details fall here, especially from here-on. What you typed earlier could be used against you, in a contempt-of-court charge.
Well, you have to hand it to them, really. I mean, it takes an incredible amount of faith to assert with absolute conviction that there is no God.
Oh, by the way............/ sarc
I wouldn’t be surprised.
I sort of agree with that statement....In that Many muslims believe in GOD but still behead and kill innocent people...
Not at all. You can plainly see that someone is bald or not.
The assertion that there is no Judeo-Christian God, Allah, Hindu gods, or any supernatural beings of any kind is purely an act of faith, since there is no conclusive evidence of any sort to prove that these beings do not exist.
Richard Dawkins said it best when he stated that he's sure there is probably no God.
Why the heck do they feel the need to actually go through with getting these billboards up and seen? If the don’t believe the don’t believe. They worship themselves.
There, I said it.
Ugghhh..no thanks Atheists! Let me cling to 'the fairytale' of believing the messiah Jesus and the mansions in glory. Sorry I won't get to see you there if 'the fairytale' is true! Enjoy 'the best you'll ever have' now!
That's the first problem with their movement. The statement above is false.
Imagine if they put ads on buses for Christian Pride.
You would think that atheists would value life a lot more. Yet the same people go around saying abortion is okay and what about the Communists? They were atheists and they slaughtered people. atheism is a religion, it is a religion of Satan.
Hilarious to see people squabble over the imaginary idea that there is no God. Atheism is man-made nonsense.
I kinda feel sorry for Atheists. To have such an empty life with no meaning. Sad really...
As a non-believer, I don’t really see the point of Atheist groups. I don’t believe in a lot of things, not just deities, but I don’t see the point of hanging out with other people who share the same non-beliefs.
A jury found him not guilty.
an
How does an atheist swear?
“I d#mn it!”
Atheism is a religion because it is a faith/belief system.
The Golden Rule? Treat others as you want to be treated?
“Love the Lord thy God with all you heart and all your soul and all your mind and love your neighbor as yourself.” Matt. 22: 37-40
You mean THAT golden rule?? Yes, it IS really old! :)
Get ready. Put ‘em down. Don't let them get away with it and don't ever let them attack you and walk away unscathed. Most are total sissies when you don't back down.
Say “how do you know there is no God?” Prove it or shut up and admit you don't know what you are talking about. When an atheist comes at you aggressively make him prove his assertions and don't let him turn it back on you to prove yourself to him.
Keep asking the same question - how do you know there is no God? Prove it. What is the proof for your belief structure? Prove it. Where is your proof? This is important for Christians to know going into this or we are going to be totally dominated by the pure meanness here. Get read. Be Paul.
You are aware that the Golden Rule is far, far older than the Matthews version, aren’t you?
At least from my perspective, I can say that I haven't seen any convincing evidence of any divine beings. I am no more convinced of the existence of the Christian god than I am of any Hindu gods. Of course, logically it is impossible to prove a negative, but the general rule is that the person proposing something (such as the existence of divine beings) has the onus of providing the evidence.
Well that assumption that it is up to Christians to prove something to atheists is just not to be accepted as a rule to be obeyed by Christians. That sets atheists up as the assumed superiors to be served and pleased by assumed intellectual inferiors. Christians must step out of that false box and put back onto atheists what atheists put onto Christians - in equality. Prove your belief. Neither of us really can.
I have seen no convincing evidence that there is no God. Personally, I have experienced God but I can’t show Him to you and neither do I have a responsibility to have my experience pronounced real by you. Likewise, you no responsibility to me to prove your experience devoid of God.
As far as all the other gods people worship, my God said don’t go there, so I don’t. As I get older, I see why that is. When I was younger I did not understand that “close mindedness.” But when I live the experience of other dimensions of myself in relationship with God, I can see why there should be no other things calling themselves god blocking me from that holy place with God.
This probably all sounds like gibberish to you, I am sure. I guess you had to be there; I was and you weren’t. You don’t have to prove you were not there; I don’t have to prove I go there. Being honorable people, I’ll take your word for it that you were not there and you can take my word for it is a place I often go. :)
I can only speak for myself, but I don't consider it a rule that Christians need to prove anything to me (or vice versa). But, if a specific Christian wants to discuss the existence of a supreme being, then the onus is on them to provide evidence thereof.
Prove your belief. Neither of us really can.
In such a situation, you're asking the atheist to prove a negative- which is impossible. The best I can ever do is say that the evidence for a creator does not exist or is unconvincing. We presumably share a disbelief in the Hindu gods, but neither one of us can prove their non-existence.
I guess it comes down to faith, which is an intensely personal thing.
It always boils down to the same thing. So atheists have no business going there except for harassment and in that case, Christians don’t have to be “nice” about it and play along by rules set by atheists to serve themselves.
You must prove a negative of your central assertion that God does not exist simply because it is what it is. Otherwise, you have no superior authority in the discussion. You can not prove your assertion anymore than can Christians prove to you. Like it or not - that is the bottom line.
