A distraught caller trying to save the life of a 2-year-old Florida girl strangled by a pet python screams "The baby's dead!" in chilling 911 tapes released in the toddler's death.

Shaiunna Hare died early Wednesday morning after being attacked in her crib by the snake, which escaped from its aquarium, police said.

"The baby's dead!" a sobbing caller from the house screamed to a 911 dispatcher. "Our stupid snake got out in the middle of the night and strangled the baby."

Authorities did not identify the caller and removed the person's name from the recording.

"She got out of the cage last night and got into the baby's crib and strangled her to death," the caller says in the tape.

And what stupid, stupid people.

If that’s the definition my last two houseguests are the parents of my children.

ABSOLUTELY believable (no matter how it is spelled). Snakes are remarkably strong, and strong climbers. In addition, they are extremely sensitive detectors of prey. “bit the child on the head”?

NO- it wasn’t biting it, that was the first part of working to swallow the child, which probably wasn’t possible for this snake. However, with no experience to guide it in this respect, and working only on instinct, it would not have realized that was futile until it tried at length.

If you were all sleeping together and playing family then perhaps.

Parent means something more than “mommy’s boyfriend.”

It sure as heck means more than “The guy who let his snake kill you.”

He’s living there, shacking up with ‘mommy’ and playing ‘daddy’...get over the ‘word-game’.

We all knew what you meant, I just thought it was funny that nobody else seemed to notice.

This story is very feasible, as far as the snake escaping and strangling the child. I won’t repeat my post:

It’s not a word game, it’s a moral distinction. Calling these daddy du jours “parents” is an insult to every man who has put in the hours and made sacrifices for his kids.

Hey, if she had thrown him out yesterday, and brought home a new guy on Saturday night, how long would that guy have to live there before he was a “parent?”

That said, how anyone can keep a snake as a pet is beyond me period.>>>>>>>>

I TOTALLY agree! I use to have a girlfriend who had an iguana. She always wanted to let it run free in the house. I said, NO. Eventually I got rid of the iguana by getting rid of the girlfriend.

I agree this is criminal negligence. Someone is going to jail.

The "fat python" comment is just horrible to think about but you are right.

Not worth the posts to argue you with it anymore...you have your opinion and I have mine.

Having watched a friend’s 10+ ft. python crawl around the living room and raise the first 1/3 of its body off the floor to climb up onto the couch and other furniture, I can easily believe this. It is one big MUSCLE, stronger than you can imagine.

<What kind of a person refers to their child as “the baby?”

I have a 32 yr old son. He was the first boy and first grandchild in my family. Even when other grandchildren came along, he was ‘the baby’ for years and, out of his earshot, is still referred to as ‘the baby’ by his many doting relatives.

OK, maybe we’re weird, but I wasn’t surprised to hear the child referred to thus. I don’t think it means that the parents had any less affection for the child.

That said, live in boyfriend and ‘other baby daddy’ children always get me nervous. Too many instances of child abuse/child murder for it to be a coincidence.

If she had thrown him out yesterday, and brought home a new guy on Saturday night, how long would that guy have to live there before he was a “parent?”
