CHICAGO, July 6 (UPI) -- Illinois prosecutors say they're seeking the death penalty for a Chicago man who allegedly beat his landlord to death with garden tools.
Cook County, Ill., officials said Sunday Martin Vega, 27, is eligible for the death penalty for allegedly killing landlord William Hallin, 67, using the garden tools, an ice scraper, a BB gun and a pipe before setting the body on fire, The Chicago Tribune reported.
Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil has denied bail for Vega, the newspaper said.
Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Emily Stevens alleged Vega killed Hallin Friday when the landlord came around to collect the rent and noticed Vega had a dog in his apartment, which was banned by the rental agreement.
Stevens said when Hallin ordered Vega to remove the dog, a fight ensued in which the tenant allegedly pushed the landlord down a flight of stairs, tied him up in the basement, struck him in the head with a lamp, choked him with a rope and set his body on fire, the Tribune reported.

If convicted and Vega receives the death penalty, he will have at least 15 years before the sentence is carried out.
The death penalty should come a heck of a lot quicker.
There never was a savage defendant that an American judge could not ultimately sympathize with. In our society the socially conscious intuitively side with the criminal element. The more savage the defendant the greater the pity one feels for him. One might call it “Pathological Pity!
It will be reduced to Life Imprisonment or less for something like “Mental Duress”. Folks just don’t believe the scriptures anymore “Thou shalt not suffer a murderer to live”
You’re correct. I have no doubt the pity party will begin for Vega. What a wonderful, loving person he is. The landlord was always tormenting my client.
We see it all the time.
Ban pit tools!
That is one ugly dog. I wonder what his murdering owner looks like...
Actually, it says “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live”.
[the word translated into “witch” being pharmakeia, which can mean any of three definitions]
1]the use or the administering of drugs
poisoning
2]sorcery, magical arts, often found in connection with idolatry and fostered by it
3]metaph. the deceptions and seductions of idolatry
Given that we get “pharmacist” from “pharmakeia”, most agree that poison/drugs was the intent as King James had a massive phobia about being poisoned.
The later “misunderstanding” of the word gave us all those jolly inquisitions.
I’m sure the dog is going do really well.
You are correct, my memory cells have failed me once again. I found “he is a murderer; the murderer shall surely be put to death” several times in the Old Testament (Numbers). Should have looked it up before posting. Thanks.
On the upside, he no longer has a raving, murderous lunatic for an owner....:)
I just have a crummy attitude about the whole “mistranslation/inquisition/wanton slaughter of innocents” thing....:)
[I’m kinda picky that way]....;-D
True dat.
I'm afraid that my Holy Scripture is a little rusty, sr4402... mind citing the book, chapter, and verse from which you're quoting there?
Thanks in advance!
Regards,
Yes, but the Old Testaments contains many, many passages demanding that people be put to death for offences which, today, would be considered trivial.
Cue the scene from "West Wing" in which Martin Sheen cites numerous Biblical verses illustrating just how absurd it is to make moral judgements based upon the Old Testament.

Regards,
His standard goes to the heart, if you've even thought about murdering someone in your mind - even to the point of calling someone a "fool" - ("racca" in Aramaic), just as Jesus said will be answerable to the God of heaven.
Without the appropriated blood of Christ, none of these sins will be paid for. Such that one would face the most powerful being in the Universe - naked and without one plea.
For the purpose of the Law is to point us to Christ and the need for Him as Savior.
Today, we don't observe the verses I wrote about. Today a Liberal Judge will probably set a murderer free to kill a mother or a child. Tommorrows judges may say, there is no penalty for murder because that would be "too cruel and unusual".
The Slouching towards Gamorrah accelerates as folks assume everything will be alright.
