H1N1 aka the Mexican Flu
Vanity ^ | today | Self

Posted on 07/12/2009 5:01:28 PM PDT by tall_tex

More of this H1N1 pandemic keeps getting into the news.

How should a couple of older folks prepare (66 & 65).

TOPICS: Health/Medicine
KEYWORDS: flu; h1n1; influenza; mexicanflu; swineflu
I know I need food, water, guns and ammunition.

I have some food set away and will get more, plus more water and water purification stuff.

Guns and ammunition, lost all I had to the lake when by boat overturned while I was fighting to land a 12 lb Large Mouth Bass. The boat actually tipped over when I dove into the water to grab that fish when my reel froze up.

Not a great trade my guns and ammo for a fish, but it will look great when it comes back from being mounted.

I am mostly thinking about over the counter meds, cold and flu stuff, and thoughts about germ killing cleaning, and stuff to protect the individual. (masks, etc)

I am trying to convince my wife that a simi trailer load of Bud would be a great medical deterent, but sadly she is not buying that.

Convincing suggestions on that would also get GREATLY APPRECIATED...

I am sorry that I can't stay and play but we have a commitment tonight.

I think that the list of things would greatly be appreciated by all FReepers.

You might want to read about the connection between influenza and Vitamin D deficiencies. Check out The Vitamin D Council for more information.

So a vaccine is, like, out of the question?

Oh and I know......many here believe that vaccines are evil.

You can buy Tamiflu from International Antiaging Systems without a prescription (ships from Europe).

Oddly, you should have some Tagamet (cimetidine is the generic). It can disrupt the cytokine storm that destroys your lungs. Don’t take it until you experience EXTREME respiratory distress.

Life Extension Foundation, Vitamin Research Products, and Durk Pearson’s website all have good articles on surviving the flu.

It's the “Mexican Swine” flu. It only seems to hit the younger and older populations. Boomers seem to be more immune. Try to stay away from the general population as well as you can until the fall when a vaccine will be available.

Regarding masks— most of the kinds shown on people in news footage for this are not adequate to prevent the H1N1 virus from passing through it. I.e., the kind of masks they want you to put on in the waiting room of clinics if you have a cough or the surgical ones with a tie at each corner.

The kind that you need are called N95, also used when around TB. However, those really need to be fit tested, and aren’t 100% reliable if there are any gaps at all— there needs to be a seal.

More info here—

http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/masks.htm

and the following quote is from here— http://lungcancer.einnews.com/pr-news/30631-h1n1-flu-scare-prompts-questions :

“What is less known is that this performance is only valid when the N95’s have been properly fit tested2. Fit testing must be done in a test environment, which is no assurance that the mask is properly fit when in actual use. Actual on the job working efficiencies for those that pass a fit test are difficult to maintain.”

—Just worried that a lot of folks are lulled into a false sense of security with masks...

It seems to me you are losing your focus. H1N1 is the problem. It is a disease. So your options are avoiding the disease, and protecting yourself from the disease, and if need be, trying to mitigate the effects of the disease. Shooting the disease with a gun won’t help.

Don’t fret so much about society collapsing because of Swine flu. If it was full blown H5N1 Avian flu, I would be concerned, but Swine flu, at its absolute worst, will be like an ordinary, if bad, flu season.

To start with, there are two likely ways you could catch Swine flu, coughing and sneezing, and hand contamination. Flu and colds spread the easiest by coughing and sneezing when it is 40F and dry. When it is warmer and moister, flu becomes more reliant on hand contamination. So be aware of the weather and act accordingly.

About the only way to avoid catching the flu by coughing and sneezing is avoidance of sick people, if at all possible. While this is obvious, there are times when you just have to go out in public, so become a bit more “standoffish”. Importantly, the people you most want to avoid are school age children, as they spread disease the most.

When it is warmer and moister out, your best defense is to carry with you and use hand sanitizer. It is now estimated that if you have to be out in public during an epidemic, where hand contamination is spreading the disease, if you use hand sanitizer six times a day, you will reduce your chances of catching the flu by 60% or more.

Importantly, ordinary soap and water is almost as good, and actually preferred when there is obvious muck on your hands. Anti-bacterial soap is not particularly better than just ordinary soap, so don’t fret it if ordinary soap is all you have.

Don’t wait until flu is “in your neighborhood” before start taking these simple precautions. Flu has an incubation period when it spreads, before it becomes obvious, so you are at risk from healthy looking people days before their symptoms show.

I see this as a survival type issue. People need to be prepared to be able to avoid as much contact as possible with others should this get out of hand.

H1N1 is definitely hitting Orange County, CA right now.

One family I know just had 3 out of 4 members get it within the last week. And one family I know just had the first member get it today. These families don’t mingle with each other. Their doctors are saying they are seeing it really swing around these parts.

Now for the good news: the ones on Tamiflu (adults AND kids) seemed to have 1 or 2 high fever nights, but virtually no other symptoms except body aches. None of them had any respiratory symptoms at all. I do not not if that was because Tamiflu prevented them, but NO RESPIRATORY SYMPTOMS. Even the little one not on Tamiflu has no respiratory symptoms.

The people who are now well are FINE. They had maybe 1-2 days in bed and then one draggy day. The kids are running around and doing well. The one little child who just got it today has a fever of 103.8 but is sitting on her couch asking for ice cream.

I don’t know if this is just a laid-back California strain compared to what they are getting hit with in London, but it is not all that bad. And yes, this flu is the H1N1. It’s the only influenza going around this summer here.

I started getting a sore throat about a week ago and lasted for 2 days. Turned into a nasty cold. Turned flu like Sunday throwing up and other stuff. My wife tried to get me to go to the Doc's all day yesterday. I hate doctors. I went to the doctors for something the first time since my Army days about 3 years ago. Had scopes probed all over the place. Diagnosis was acid reflux. Gave me a pill that didn't agree with me and stopped taking it 2 days later. Stopped drinking sodas and cut back on coffee. Could of saved a lot of pain and money if I did that in the first place.

This latest thing is really something. I can't remember ever have a cold or flu in the summer. In fact I can't ever remember being sick period in the summer months.

Doesn't matter if it's swine flu, the economy taking a big huge dump, society busting at the seams, the lightening move to socialism/marxism, female Latino superiority, we're ready. Every day I wake up I hate for the phone to ring and I hate watching the news. It gets worse every day.

The last well I worked I got hit with the full gamut of flu symptoms, with the exception of the GI routine. I have never had the fever, body aches, general weakness, and the sheer amount and viscous consistency of the crud I coughed up was amazing. I was working 12-14 hour days and finally kicked it by taking two aspirin, 1000 mg of vitamin C, 1000 units of Vitamin D, and a B Complex supplement every 12 hours after six or seven days. I used just a trace of Benadryl Elixr to open up my air passages a little when I had trouble getting the junk out of my lungs. (I'm a firm believer in using the least effective dose of OTC remedies.)

Thankfully, my job let me avoid face to face contact with almost everyone on the rig, and I did not pass it on.

Last time I felt that bad, I had severe pneumonia and was hospitalized.

I turned the TV to the cartoon channels for the kids, and check commodity prices in the early morning. As long as oil stays this low, the oil patch is imploding slowly too. We have fewer than half as many rigs drilling in this area as there were a year ago.

3 fingers of good bourbon, a little honey and some lemon juice still works good for getting the rest. Add fresh air, sunlight and yer halfway there.

These days when I leave work I wash my hands of the place.....literally. Do it again when I get home. Crazy bugs these days will make ya ill too easy.

I am actually a little frightened about this flu after reading about the 6 yo in England who came down with a sore throat and died 48 hours later. She didn’t have any other “underlying conditions.”

You might checked out Preparedness Pro, http://preparednesspro.wordpress.com, who has written a few articles on the topic. She pointed out that those N95 face masks can only be worn one time each. If someone in your family were quarantined over several days, you would need a mask each time you went into their room. The masks are just about 50 cents each, or a little less, online.

Another good blog is Avian Flu Diary, http://afludiary.blogspot.com/ and In Case of Emergency blo, http://incaseofemergencyblog.com/.

Maybe I’m being paranoid, but I’m actually terrified of whatever vaccine the government comes up with. I just don’t trust them to get it right and think the vaccine may be worse than getting the flu, but that’s my paranoia speaking there.

I’m concerned about the vaccine as well.

What bothers me is that they’re going to want everyone to get it whether they’ve had the flu or not.

My kids all had chicken pox but not verified by an actual dr visit. I have pictures of them plastered with sores and scabs, they have identifiable scars, but no, it’s not good enough. It’s either an official medical record or blood work to verify immunity or the vaccine.

If the vaccine has the risk of reactions, those who have had the flu will be unnecessarily put at risk, not to mention that vaccines are not 100% effective.

What they do with vaccines is hope to give enough herd immunity to stop the epidemic, as told me by a doctor who is an immunologist.

But that won’t stop the government.

Well I certainly hope you are on the mend and the good news is that now you have antibodies to whatever it is. :)

Like you we’re so rarely sick, even though we both “work with the public”, that we remember those few times vividly.:) Last bout of “summer flu” was sometime in the ‘80’s. The worst bout of “flu” I ever had was the direct result of the “swine flu vaccine” in the 70’s, so “Thanks, but no thanks.” :(

Because of my job, I regularly take Vitamin C, B-complex, and wash my hands often. After reading up on this flu, I’ve added Vitamin D, and a full glass of grape juice every day. :) Also because of my job, I know very quickly if anything’s “going around”, as sales of 7-Up, gingerale, Gatorade, and popsickles go up dramatically. ;) I also try to steer customers away from ice cream and towards the sherbert that’s made with real fruit juice, so I’m happy to say the flu’s not around here yet. :)

And also, like you, I see the dark clouds gathering, off in the distance and so am doing what I can to make preperation to try and weather the coming storm. :(

Go for the vaccination and look for a resurgence of this organism next fall/winter. A few mutations could increase the virulence and the contagiousness of this virus. Environmental conditions change when cold weather hits thereby allowing a more ready spread of the virus.
