More of this H1N1 pandemic keeps getting into the news.

How should a couple of older folks prepare (66 & 65).

I'll vouch for the singtomeohmuse.com site; it's one of the few sites besides FRee Republic which I read religiously.

Cheers!

Yes , they are top notch . They were the 1st to warn about the H1N1 in the summers camps & as usual they were 100% correct .

H1N1 is definitely hitting Orange County, CA right now.

One family I know just had 3 out of 4 members get it within the last week. And one family I know just had the first member get it today. These families don’t mingle with each other. Their doctors are saying they are seeing it really swing around these parts.

Now for the good news: the ones on Tamiflu (adults AND kids) seemed to have 1 or 2 high fever nights, but virtually no other symptoms except body aches. None of them had any respiratory symptoms at all. I do not not if that was because Tamiflu prevented them, but NO RESPIRATORY SYMPTOMS. Even the little one not on Tamiflu has no respiratory symptoms.

The people who are now well are FINE. They had maybe 1-2 days in bed and then one draggy day. The kids are running around and doing well. The one little child who just got it today has a fever of 103.8 but is sitting on her couch asking for ice cream.

I don’t know if this is just a laid-back California strain compared to what they are getting hit with in London, but it is not all that bad. And yes, this flu is the H1N1. It’s the only influenza going around this summer here.

I started getting a sore throat about a week ago and lasted for 2 days. Turned into a nasty cold. Turned flu like Sunday throwing up and other stuff. My wife tried to get me to go to the Doc's all day yesterday. I hate doctors. I went to the doctors for something the first time since my Army days about 3 years ago. Had scopes probed all over the place. Diagnosis was acid reflux. Gave me a pill that didn't agree with me and stopped taking it 2 days later. Stopped drinking sodas and cut back on coffee. Could of saved a lot of pain and money if I did that in the first place.

This latest thing is really something. I can't remember ever have a cold or flu in the summer. In fact I can't ever remember being sick period in the summer months.

Doesn't matter if it's swine flu, the economy taking a big huge dump, society busting at the seams, the lightening move to socialism/marxism, female Latino superiority, we're ready. Every day I wake up I hate for the phone to ring and I hate watching the news. It gets worse every day.

The last well I worked I got hit with the full gamut of flu symptoms, with the exception of the GI routine. I have never had the fever, body aches, general weakness, and the sheer amount and viscous consistency of the crud I coughed up was amazing. I was working 12-14 hour days and finally kicked it by taking two aspirin, 1000 mg of vitamin C, 1000 units of Vitamin D, and a B Complex supplement every 12 hours after six or seven days. I used just a trace of Benadryl Elixr to open up my air passages a little when I had trouble getting the junk out of my lungs. (I'm a firm believer in using the least effective dose of OTC remedies.)

Thankfully, my job let me avoid face to face contact with almost everyone on the rig, and I did not pass it on.

Last time I felt that bad, I had severe pneumonia and was hospitalized.

I turned the TV to the cartoon channels for the kids, and check commodity prices in the early morning. As long as oil stays this low, the oil patch is imploding slowly too. We have fewer than half as many rigs drilling in this area as there were a year ago.

Older ya get, easier it is to get sick friend......:o)

3 fingers of good bourbon, a little honey and some lemon juice still works good for getting the rest. Add fresh air, sunlight and yer halfway there.

These days when I leave work I wash my hands of the place.....literally. Do it again when I get home. Crazy bugs these days will make ya ill too easy.

Stay safe !

My wife (our resident BSN/RN) was told at a staff briefing the other day at work that Tamiflu is losing it’s effectiveness for some reason. They’re not sure why yet. Sorry to hear you were sick buddy.

I am actually a little frightened about this flu after reading about the 6 yo in England who came down with a sore throat and died 48 hours later. She didn’t have any other “underlying conditions.”

You might checked out Preparedness Pro, http://preparednesspro.wordpress.com, who has written a few articles on the topic. She pointed out that those N95 face masks can only be worn one time each. If someone in your family were quarantined over several days, you would need a mask each time you went into their room. The masks are just about 50 cents each, or a little less, online.

Another good blog is Avian Flu Diary, http://afludiary.blogspot.com/ and In Case of Emergency blo, http://incaseofemergencyblog.com/.

Maybe I’m being paranoid, but I’m actually terrified of whatever vaccine the government comes up with. I just don’t trust them to get it right and think the vaccine may be worse than getting the flu, but that’s my paranoia speaking there.

I’m concerned about the vaccine as well.

What bothers me is that they’re going to want everyone to get it whether they’ve had the flu or not.

My kids all had chicken pox but not verified by an actual dr visit. I have pictures of them plastered with sores and scabs, they have identifiable scars, but no, it’s not good enough. It’s either an official medical record or blood work to verify immunity or the vaccine.

If the vaccine has the risk of reactions, those who have had the flu will be unnecessarily put at risk, not to mention that vaccines are not 100% effective.

What they do with vaccines is hope to give enough herd immunity to stop the epidemic, as told me by a doctor who is an immunologist.

But that won’t stop the government.

I wonder if they’ll track down homeschoolers and somehow force our kids to get the vaccine.

Well I certainly hope you are on the mend and the good news is that now you have antibodies to whatever it is. :)

Like you we’re so rarely sick, even though we both “work with the public”, that we remember those few times vividly.:) Last bout of “summer flu” was sometime in the ‘80’s. The worst bout of “flu” I ever had was the direct result of the “swine flu vaccine” in the 70’s, so “Thanks, but no thanks.” :(

Because of my job, I regularly take Vitamin C, B-complex, and wash my hands often. After reading up on this flu, I’ve added Vitamin D, and a full glass of grape juice every day. :) Also because of my job, I know very quickly if anything’s “going around”, as sales of 7-Up, gingerale, Gatorade, and popsickles go up dramatically. ;) I also try to steer customers away from ice cream and towards the sherbert that’s made with real fruit juice, so I’m happy to say the flu’s not around here yet. :)

And also, like you, I see the dark clouds gathering, off in the distance and so am doing what I can to make preperation to try and weather the coming storm. :(

New report says, via accumulating anecdotes, that H1N1 seems terminal only for the obese.

I wouldn’t put anything past them.

They may try to do it when they go to college, like they do now for other vaccines.
