To help minimize the booing by having the God of current St. Louis athletes on the field. Also, 1B players are more able to handle wild throws than a catcher laden with all the gear.

Our local paper, here in podunk, AZ, carried an AP story:

"Obama tosses first pitch: ... true to his word: He didn't bounce it.... the ceremonial first pitch ... would reach the plate on the fly... Obama delivered!"

Uh, no, it did not reach the plate. Silly, just a tiny fib... but covering for any and every shortcoming is just the way it is now.

The catcher reflexively blocks a throw in the dirt, the 1st baseman scoops it up. (Throw was in fact short, dispite the fact that Pujols was squatting at the top of home plate.)

That and the fact that they were hoping that some of Pujols’ popularity would rub off on him when they embraced after the pitch.
