American moving to Germany or Austria
self ^ | 7-26-09 | self

Posted on 07/26/2009 2:27:34 PM PDT by Former MSM Viewer

I am considering some extended travel - basically living in either Germany or Austria.. Any comments about what I should look for? I want a base over there to explore the rest of Europe for a 6-12 month period. Rent an apt or house? As an American, what issues would I have to deal with?

TOPICS: Travel
KEYWORDS: austria; europe; overseas
I love Europe, Bavaria, France...now I want to spend longer than 2 weeks over there.

If you move there, you might want to see the “Demographics” video... hoo-boy!

From another post that I did earlier...

That evil and oppressive governmental idealogy of Islam and the way of implementing it by Sharia law is already making inroads right here in this country — the good ole USA. We’re about to see a “takeover” of the U.S. by the evil and oppressive idealogy of the government of Islam (that is aiming for world-wide conquest and has stated that the U.S. is *on its list* to take over...)

And for those people who need some additional facts about what the evil and oppressive governmental idealogy of Islam is doing, look at some of the following.

There’s no question about it... the enemy is *Islam* itself and the evil and oppressive and false idealogy that it perpetrates. Some say the problem is “fascism” (instead of the basic oppressive governmental idealogy of Islam, itself). But, that is to engage in “political correctness” and nothing more... and sidetracks people from the *true enemy* in this war.

In one generation we’ll see, right here in the United States that “Islam” is the enemy and not “fascism”...

Muslim Demographics...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-3X5hIFXYU

and also, this...

Islam: What the West Needs to Know - FULL LENGTH ENGLISH VERSION
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-871902797772997781

and then, looking at this...

“The Third Jihad” (video - abridged version of film)
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/2271522/posts

This is the allowance of “false gods” to take over this nation because of the ignorance of the people of the land in regards to the true God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob...

And so, we see that we’re going to have the “false god of Islam” ruling over the USA and running the USA in just one generation from now.

If you stay more than 6 months, you need a visa (and a good reason to have one.)

You probably won’t be able to stay that long on a mere tourist visa.

Also, you should check with a German or Austrian tax advisor to make sure you don’t stay long enough so that you are considered resident for tax purposes.

Europe is not a place to live, IMHO. It’s ok for a short rip off summer vacation. Consider Australia, who are more like us, or New Zealand.

I lived in Italy for a few years, it is a great way to see Europe. Are you going to get a car(rent/lease)? Check the immigration requirements where you base out of. As a tourist you may have to leave the country every few months. It should not be a problem if you are doing a lot of traveling. Enjoy the food, that is one of the things I truly miss

Munich is a great base for Austria and Germany. We visited both countries 6 months after the wall fell, and found it very convenient. Unfortunately, reunification hadn’t occurred yet, so the train trip from Munich to Berlin took 10 hours!! A soccer final in Berlin made the train station a bad place to be for the return trip, so we flew back to Nuremburg to continue our travels....

Don’t drive like an American...i.e. no turn signals, traveling in the passing lane when not passing, etc. These people take their driving seriously and you’ll know it if you get stopped by the police in Germany.

Register with the city where you live. If you move - unregister and register with the new city.
If you work there you will need advanced documentation and you will need to buy health insurance.
The further south, the better.

Seriously, if you go to France, make sure your French is flawless. They truly HATE Americans and doubly HATE it if you speak English, not French.

Our visit to France would have been wonderful had they evacuated the French fro Paris. Also note they eat at strange times. It's a bizarre culture. If you have kids, keep the T.V. OFF. What they show on prime time is outrageous. I'd say it's well beyond XXX. Germany is on the same order concerning T.V. watching. Close ups of genitalia ... is inappropriate. It's not just females but males as well. I could hardly believe how explicit it was.

I think that happens to Americans (or anyone) who starts off talking to them in a rude or condescending way...

I personally have never experienced it.

Bavaria is wonderful, I'm frequently over there visiting friends and doing business.
The North and Western German areas are losing their identity fast [like a lot of Europe under pressure from the Globalists], but Bavaria is clinging onto it's heritage.

Property in Munich is very expensive, and living costs can be also.
Although you've appear to have been on holiday already, so probably know, but my vote for some of the places in Munich for essential viewing, the Nazi Parliament buildings, the Museums, City Parks, Architecture.

Some friends have just emigrated to France [from the UK], and they're really not sure now after a few months, it's getting really complicated in France, especially in the Cities, I personally wouldn't risk moving there permanently, and France is our nearest EU neighbour.

Austria is just like Munich, although more rural.
We often went to Attnang Pucheim & Schwanenstadt on business, beautiful people, beautiful scenery.

The Czech Republic is wonderful, Prague should be on your list, although obviously not centrally located, but is a jewel in Europe, with property still relatively 'reasonable' by inflated European standards anyway.

Property in Croatia is exceptional value, and you're only a few hours drive from Bavaria too, and you also have wonderful weather!

OK......I have been to Europe twice.

First, I went to (on a tour) England, Wales and Scotland......played golf in Scotland twice. (no, not St. Andrews, didn’t have time)

I also went to Paris on the EuroStar...(high speed train goes under the English Channel) ...THE PEOPLE IN EUROPE ARE GREAT, THEY LOVE AMERICANS, BECAUSE YOU SPEND MONEY.........(except in Paris, you will get a little grief)

Then, I went to Germany, Switzerland and Austria......on another trip. (don’t worry about learning German, most Germans know a little English, and then it is so much fun asking for the sandwich........Ha)

I love Europe. It is Disney Land for adults.......however, it is very expensive.

Stay in B&B’s if you can. The best in London is the Astor House. Expensive, but awesome. A/C is not used alot in Europe yet, and it is very humid there. Astor House has A/C.

In Germany, St. Goar is incredible. In Europe, it is all about subways and trains.......and they are great to get around. You can get to St.Goar on the Rhine river by train......from Frankfort....very small town, and great stuff to do......Rhine River out your back door. Castle to hike to, and wonderful people to meet.

Swizerland is to die for. I live in Colorado, and we don’t have the Eiger............(remember the ‘Eiger Sanction?’)

Austria is gorgeous. If you like museums and classical music, go to Salzburg and Vienna. Stay at a B&B, you can walk anywhere in either city......and go to a Mozart Dinner in Salzburg.......

Bavaria is gorgeous. Go to the Castle Neuschwanstein, the castle Walt Disney used for ‘his castle’..........it is a long two mile walk up a hill, and well worth it.........

I could spend hours talking about Europe.........visiting, NOT their politics.........however when you talk to the locals, you will find they will agree with you more than disagree..........

No, we were not “rude” or “condescending” in any way. It was a family vacation. We were relaxed and eager to see the Eiffel Tower ... till we asked a French cop for directions ... Talk about HOSTILE! It was unbelievable! The French are LAZY and belligerent/

All one can do is warn you. Our expereince there of the hostility is the NORM. It is not a country we'd ever go back to.

I would suggest that you get your passport stamped when you enter and exit, to prove when you were in or out of the country. Same with US entry and exit. Many times immigration will just wave you through and not stamp it, but they will stamp it if you ask.

You might also check if the 6-month tourist visa limit applies per country, or for the entire E.U.(perhaps you need to leave the E.U every 6 months--I don't know).

You have to go out of the EU border every 90 days and get your passport stamped.
If you can find good hostels, they are lower in price. I doubt you’ll be able to rent an apartment, nor would you want to, as the prices can be very high. Of course, I live in Stuttgart, the highest area in Germany. Travel in some countries is best by train, if possible. Travel by car can include hefty tolls. France, Italy, and Switzerland, to name a few.

Otherwise, it is very nice over here. Lots of rain, so it is very green. We’ve had a lot of thunderstorms, which is very unusual, and it is a bit cooler than in the states. Bring a light jacket if traveling in the summer.

You might look online to the European Stars & Stripes newspaper and place an add, see if people would let you house sit while they are away. Are you a veteran?

Can I suggest basing your stay in the Frankfurt area? From here, you have much of Western Europe in easy driving or train range - Amsterdam, Zurich, Cologne, Paris, and Strasbourg are all within 1-4 hours distance. You'll also have no problems with language - the Frankfurt area is home to large numbers of US military and English is a given. I've seen several suggestions for Munich, but Bavarians tend to be somewhat insular in my experience - Munich might be better after you've spent a couple of months in Germany. Frankfurt itself might be expensive, but the suburbs will be quite a bit cheaper.

Germany is a Federation of formerly independent States that maintain their local traditions like different ‘national holidays’etc. Bavaria still ‘thinks’ it is an independent country and so do the surrounding states, as in “they speak a foreign language there”. As you move north out of Bavaria, don't be surprised if you see a sign “You are now entering Germany”

As with a lot these situations, it is friendly rivalry, but sometimes with an undercurrent of tension.

I'm sorry your experience there was so bad. My experience has been that the French appreciate any effort to speak French, no matter how bad, and are usually quite nice if you do so - even Parisians, who are famed for their rudeness. My own French is atrocious and I've never encountered discourtesy except for my first trip there, when I kept speaking English.

I can't say I blame them - after all, I'd tend to get annoyed if someone from abroad came here and insisted on speaking to me in a language I don't understand.

I've never been over to Bratislava, and only had a few day visits to Vienna whilst in Austria, I've always been a sponge for Salzburg, and love the old city.

Bad Ischl, Gmunden and other places round the Lakes are some cherished places in Austria for me, absolutely stunning scenery!

I sometimes used to fly direct to Salzburg from my local airport, stay over then get the train to Munich when meeting friends, saved hundreds on fares not flying into Franz Josef Strauss, and many hours not having to get to Manchester or London airports because of route monopolies, and gave me a wonderful excuse to venture round Austria!

I would put in a plug for establishing a base in Southwest Germany—Stuttgart, for instance. From there you can get to a variety of places in west central Europe:

1. The Black forest (Baden-Baden, Freudenstadt, Freiburg im Breisgau, Donaueschingen (the source of the Danube).

2. North Central Switzerland (Lake Konstanz, Zurich, Basel)

3. The (currently—ahem—French) Alsace; principal city, Strasbourg.

4. German cities stretching from Bonn through Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, Heilbronn, Nuremburg, Ulm, to Munich.

well you will have to get out after 3 month. this is the logest time possible to stay in the EU for a US citizen without a Visa. If you want to stay longer and you want to visit different EU countries make shure that you get a Visa for a country which is part of the “schengen” zone(Germany,Austria,netherlands....)
