I am considering some extended travel - basically living in either Germany or Austria.. Any comments about what I should look for? I want a base over there to explore the rest of Europe for a 6-12 month period. Rent an apt or house? As an American, what issues would I have to deal with?
If you move there, you might want to see the “Demographics” video... hoo-boy!
From another post that I did earlier...
That evil and oppressive governmental idealogy of Islam and the way of implementing it by Sharia law is already making inroads right here in this country the good ole USA. Were about to see a takeover of the U.S. by the evil and oppressive idealogy of the government of Islam (that is aiming for world-wide conquest and has stated that the U.S. is *on its list* to take over...)
And for those people who need some additional facts about what the evil and oppressive governmental idealogy of Islam is doing, look at some of the following.
Theres no question about it... the enemy is *Islam* itself and the evil and oppressive and false idealogy that it perpetrates. Some say the problem is fascism (instead of the basic oppressive governmental idealogy of Islam, itself). But, that is to engage in political correctness and nothing more... and sidetracks people from the *true enemy* in this war.
In one generation well see, right here in the United States that Islam is the enemy and not fascism...

This is the allowance of false gods to take over this nation because of the ignorance of the people of the land in regards to the true God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob...
And so, we see that were going to have the false god of Islam ruling over the USA and running the USA in just one generation from now.

Well, for starters, they don’t speak american over there.
If you stay more than 6 months, you need a visa (and a good reason to have one.)
You probably won’t be able to stay that long on a mere tourist visa.
Also, you should check with a German or Austrian tax advisor to make sure you don’t stay long enough so that you are considered resident for tax purposes.
Europe is not a place to live, IMHO. It’s ok for a short rip off summer vacation. Consider Australia, who are more like us, or New Zealand.
I lived in Italy for a few years, it is a great way to see Europe. Are you going to get a car(rent/lease)? Check the immigration requirements where you base out of. As a tourist you may have to leave the country every few months. It should not be a problem if you are doing a lot of traveling. Enjoy the food, that is one of the things I truly miss
If you have children, the total loss of the ability to direct their education, or lives.
Munich is a great base for Austria and Germany. We visited both countries 6 months after the wall fell, and found it very convenient. Unfortunately, reunification hadn’t occurred yet, so the train trip from Munich to Berlin took 10 hours!! A soccer final in Berlin made the train station a bad place to be for the return trip, so we flew back to Nuremburg to continue our travels....
hh
Bring lots of money.
Id be traveling ‘off base’ regularly...
yeah, I could come back after 5 1/2 months...thanks for that tip. I will look into that.
Whats best way to rent? Apt? Private house? How much does a month in an apt cost?
Don’t drive like an American...i.e. no turn signals, traveling in the passing lane when not passing, etc. These people take their driving seriously and you’ll know it if you get stopped by the police in Germany.
been to Munich...loved it - loved the bikes. Cleanest city Ive visited, too...
Register with the city where you live. If you move - unregister and register with the new city.
If you work there you will need advanced documentation and you will need to buy health insurance.
The further south, the better.
‘Bavaria is not Germany it is another country.’ - research!
France stinks and they HATE Americans.
Go to Sweden or the Bahamas. That’s where businesses are lining up to move to. They are business friendly.
Send away to the White House for B.H. Obama’s English-Austrian diction before you travel.
Bavaria is not Germany it is another country. - research!
I know Bavaria is not Germany. Bavaria is a region...
Our visit to France would have been wonderful had they evacuated the French fro Paris. Also note they eat at strange times. It's a bizarre culture. If you have kids, keep the T.V. OFF. What they show on prime time is outrageous. I'd say it's well beyond XXX. Germany is on the same order concerning T.V. watching. Close ups of genitalia ... is inappropriate. It's not just females but males as well. I could hardly believe how explicit it was.
You’ll have to learn to speak Austrian in Vienna, Bavarian in Munich, and German in Berlin.
I love France. No one was EVER rude to me or my family in France - quite the contrary...
I think that happens to Americans (or anyone) who starts off talking to them in a rude or condescending way...
I personally have never experienced it.
OK......I have been to Europe twice.
First, I went to (on a tour) England, Wales and Scotland......played golf in Scotland twice. (no, not St. Andrews, didn’t have time)
I also went to Paris on the EuroStar...(high speed train goes under the English Channel) ...THE PEOPLE IN EUROPE ARE GREAT, THEY LOVE AMERICANS, BECAUSE YOU SPEND MONEY.........(except in Paris, you will get a little grief)
Then, I went to Germany, Switzerland and Austria......on another trip. (don’t worry about learning German, most Germans know a little English, and then it is so much fun asking for the sandwich........Ha)
I love Europe. It is Disney Land for adults.......however, it is very expensive.
Stay in B&B’s if you can. The best in London is the Astor House. Expensive, but awesome. A/C is not used alot in Europe yet, and it is very humid there. Astor House has A/C.
In Germany, St. Goar is incredible. In Europe, it is all about subways and trains.......and they are great to get around. You can get to St.Goar on the Rhine river by train......from Frankfort....very small town, and great stuff to do......Rhine River out your back door. Castle to hike to, and wonderful people to meet.
Swizerland is to die for. I live in Colorado, and we don’t have the Eiger............(remember the ‘Eiger Sanction?’)
Austria is gorgeous. If you like museums and classical music, go to Salzburg and Vienna. Stay at a B&B, you can walk anywhere in either city......and go to a Mozart Dinner in Salzburg.......
Bavaria is gorgeous. Go to the Castle Neuschwanstein, the castle Walt Disney used for ‘his castle’..........it is a long two mile walk up a hill, and well worth it.........
I could spend hours talking about Europe.........visiting, NOT their politics.........however when you talk to the locals, you will find they will agree with you more than disagree..........
I think that happens to Americans (or anyone) who starts off talking to them in a rude or condescending way...
I personally have never experienced it.
No, we were not “rude” or “condescending” in any way. It was a family vacation. We were relaxed and eager to see the Eiffel Tower ... till we asked a French cop for directions ... Talk about HOSTILE! It was unbelievable! The French are LAZY and belligerent/
All one can do is warn you. Our expereince there of the hostility is the NORM. It is not a country we'd ever go back to.
You might also check if the 6-month tourist visa limit applies per country, or for the entire E.U.(perhaps you need to leave the E.U every 6 months--I don't know).
Alcohol content of the beer can be much higher than in the US.
You have to go out of the EU border every 90 days and get your passport stamped.
If you can find good hostels, they are lower in price. I doubt you’ll be able to rent an apartment, nor would you want to, as the prices can be very high. Of course, I live in Stuttgart, the highest area in Germany. Travel in some countries is best by train, if possible. Travel by car can include hefty tolls. France, Italy, and Switzerland, to name a few.
Otherwise, it is very nice over here. Lots of rain, so it is very green. We’ve had a lot of thunderstorms, which is very unusual, and it is a bit cooler than in the states. Bring a light jacket if traveling in the summer.
You might look online to the European Stars & Stripes newspaper and place an add, see if people would let you house sit while they are away. Are you a veteran?
With respect, if you think that - you need to go back to your research...
Good point! The beer in Germany is awesome, too...and they serve it in big mugs!!!
Please elaborate. I always understood it to be a region. Not counting from medievel times...
As with a lot these situations, it is friendly rivalry, but sometimes with an undercurrent of tension.
Germany? Austria? You have something against the Swiss? If I ever could afford it I always thought I would like to live in either Luxembourg City or Zurich.

It's like those French have a different word for everything.
I was actually looking at Bratislava, since it's only about a half an hour from Vienna (Bratislava and Vienna are the two closest capital cities in the world).
Oops, actually Bratislava and Vienna are in third-place, behind Rome/Vatican City and Kinshasa/Brazzaville.
There was a report on French Schooling on the news a few months ago, apparently they’re teaching English as a matter of course in France now, which some were protesting against.
I would put in a plug for establishing a base in Southwest Germany—Stuttgart, for instance. From there you can get to a variety of places in west central Europe:
1. The Black forest (Baden-Baden, Freudenstadt, Freiburg im Breisgau, Donaueschingen (the source of the Danube).
2. North Central Switzerland (Lake Konstanz, Zurich, Basel)
3. The (currently—ahem—French) Alsace; principal city, Strasbourg.
4. German cities stretching from Bonn through Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, Heilbronn, Nuremburg, Ulm, to Munich.
According to President BO, people in Austria speak Austrian. You may need an interpreter.
Chapeau means hat. Oeuf means egg.
“We would like to go to ze hotel.”
I understand that there is an enormous ocean blocking your journey.
well you will have to get out after 3 month. this is the logest time possible to stay in the EU for a US citizen without a Visa. If you want to stay longer and you want to visit different EU countries make shure that you get a Visa for a country which is part of the “schengen” zone(Germany,Austria,netherlands....)
oh and your US cell phone will not work in Europe (so if you don´t own a Tri Band cell phone you will have to buy a new one in Europe).
