Safe Sex Poster: No Laughing Matter

Is sex safer in Taiwan or can it be? The alarming increase of STDs and abortions is forcing the Taipei city government Department of Health to take significant action by appealing to teenagers to use condoms during intercourse.

The statistics speak grimly for themselves. In the last year, the youngest case of syphilis infection in Taipei City was just 14, with 17 as the youngest age for a case of AIDS.

For those who fall within the 15-19 age group, Since 2008, AIDS infections grew from 1-5, HIV infections from 5 to 9, syphilis incidence from 13 to 22 and condyloma infections from 8 to 17.

The above poster addresses the population that needs help the most. It is funny according to some, but its message is far from amusing. The bottom caption translates into: “Be careful, this is what could happen if you don’t wear a condom.”

The word, condom, translated from the Chinese reads: “avoid pregnancy cover” and “safety cover.” In the poster, the word is amusingly referred to as “insurance cover.”

I figured the whole safe sex thing out.

Monogamy. Sex between a husband and wife is the safest sex there is.

I find this somewhat surprising. When I was there, I found Taiwan to be a very conservative country. No porno mags (not that I was looking), no strip clubs (not that I was looking), the young ladies didn’t wear slutwear (yes I was checking them out). Most of the women in the pool did not wear bikinis (yes I was looking).

In fact I was told that it was not proper for a single woman to live by herself.

Hey Dog...interesting post thats for certain. Perdogg, this is a very 'sexual' society. Lots of porno mags as well as internet sex sites. Lots of strip clubs, hostess bars, 'haircut shops' and just plain whorehouses.
As a matter of fact, there is a large 'sex-workers' "union" here on the island - *disclaimer* - it originated by some busy-body university "feminists" out to make a name for their-selves, but it has been over-taken by 'legitimate' sex-workers. Right now an issue before the Legislative Yuan (Island congress of sorts) is a return to legalized 'Red Light" districts for the organized offering of goodies with health checks and fair treatment of the goodie babes.

As to clothing on the women here...its scanty in the hot weather and its hot almost all year round...me likey...me looky...me no touchy or talky...I'm married...;-(

The single woman living by herself thing is news to me. I live very close to a university and there is a lot of "student" housing that is also home to a number of single persons whose families live elsewhere on the island. They are here for their work and live in the 'stuerndt-type' housing because its safe, cheap and usually pretty well-maintained. Lots of single women, and guys, live in them.
But I do understand what you mean. In many ways there is a lot of conservative outlooks among the 'older' generation.

Oh...another funny thing. Sexy lingerie shops as well as condom and sex toy stores are all over the place. Its sometimes a bit disconcerting to pull up to a red light, look over to the curb and see 20 mannequins decked out in peeky-boo sexy lingerie lining the sidewalk 3 feet away from ya.

The condom shops seem to have a battle on with which store can have the funniest sign with a condom on it...and yes...some of them have flashing lights and even talk as they wiggle...hilarious.
