A plan to demolish a building in Cankiri, central Turkey went badly wrong when the 25-metre high structure rolled over onto its roof.

The building, a flour factory built in 1928 which had been idle since the 1980s, was scheduled to be demolished to make way for a shopping centre.

No-one was reported to have been injured.

I hope nobody was hurt, 'cause that was hilarious to watch.

Wonder if the contractor was insured...(rhetorical question).

I think that the builders of this factory were quite aware that Turkey is an EARTHQUAKE area and designed and built accordingly. After so many stories about crooked contractors and deficient designs, this one deserves a gold star. I can just see the conversation in my mind's eye, "Hey Achmed, did you feel that tremblor last night?" Achmed, "Sure did, Tarrick, what say we add another ton of cement and concrete to the mix. Just to be safe!"

Now, the demolition crew SHOULD have gotten a clue when they performed that bottom floor demolition. Still the picture is priceless and even with red faces the fact that there were no fatalities is a blessing.

I've been to Turkey a few times, courtesy of Uncle Sam.

I took several tours while I was there. I noticed that many residential homes were in various stages of construction.

I asked our tour guide about this.

He answered that a typical family home will include room for the in-laws.

So, one floor would have to contain the whole family until a 2nd floor could be built and then a 3rd floor, etc.

The building standards looked dubious at best.

Remember this one in Shanghai? What's with these buildings falling or rolling over without breaking up?

I wonder what they wound up doing with that building? At least the Turks were trying to bring their building down.

They don’t build ‘em like they used to.

A structure that topples and lands intact should be the subject of serious inquiry as to the reason for its architectural integrity.

In other words, find out who designed the SOB, and put him on retainer!

Don't know... I'll be back in Shanghai in about 2 weeks, and my apartment over there is 2 km North of that building that toppled. I'll walk by and see what's up! But it's probably been broken in to rubble by now, with the land being reworked to start again.

A structure that topples and lands intact should be the subject of serious inquiry as to the reason for its architectural integrity.

Yes sir! We often make fun of the quality of products from the 3rd world (China and Turkey included), but here we've seen that construction can actually be overkill! Consistency is the biggest problem...
