A Vermont man rescued a baby moose from dogs that had chewed up his hips, but it doesn't look like David Lawrence can protect the moose from state wildlife officials who say the now-grown bull must be killed.
Every day Lawrence makes the trip from Albany, Vt., to an Irasburg farm to visit Pete, a male moose whose affection he earned by nursing the bull back to health with a daily supply of food, reported WPTZ-TV in Plattsburgh, N.Y.
"He expects me to come through the gate every day. This area has become his home because he knows I'm going to come see him," Lawrence said.
The 600-acre fenced-in farm on which Pete lives is owned by Doug Nelson, who has created an animal preserve -- and hunting facility -- for imported elk and red deer. Last year, he allowed Lawrence to bring Pete to the farm. Pete was a newborn and had been injured by dogs.

Where’s the empathy from the ‘rats?
He stole the King’s Moose.
FREE PETE!
It could bite his sister....
Here we go again, saving wildlife. They know what is good for the moose. They captured one on the streets of Albany NY and decided to release it miles west of the capital. The moose didn’t take long to find Rt 90 and an 18 wheeler. So much for saving wildlife.
“Wheres the empathy from the rats?”
Now if only that moose wanted an abortion... it could have even gotten a grant.
Apparently the moose is going to get gov’t healthcare.
Oh leave the Moose alone!
Why cant the state let the moose live at a game farm? Recently, there was a story locally where a man had a pet, which became against the law years after he got it. It is a snakehead fish. There was a public outcry and the state relented and let him keep it. See this link: www.wktv.com/news/local/49002356.html. Some supporters started a petition to save the fish named Rocky at this site: www.thepetitionsite.com/1/save-chriss-pet-snakehead-fish!
IF the guy was doing something harmful to wild animals, or if he was hoarding wild animals and trying to domesticate a whole bunch of them, I’d think there’d be something to object to.
The guy saved a wild moose from a injuries received from a dog attack. The moose is for all intents and purposes, a domesticated but technically ‘wild’ animal. For this one guy. They aren’t trying to duplicate or get more wild animals domesticated.
This is government bureaucracy focusing on something that they should stay the hell out of. Thanks to this guy, they have one extra moose in Vermont.
I think in these cases we need to start culling off the wildlife bureaucrats until one of them finally realizes the correct answer is “Nothing to see here, we don’t need to do anything.”
Is Sarah going to field dress it?
The State of Vermont is bordering on the ridiculous.
Yes, New York.

David Lawrence talks to Pete the moose in Irasburg, Vt., Thursday, July 30, 2009. Pete was raised by 73-year-old Lawrence, who nursed the then-newborn moose back to health after Pete had been injured by dogs.

A couple of things .... first of all, the farm Pete is on is overrun with native and non-native species. I think Pete and old man Lawrence are caught up in this flap. The DEP let this one get out of hand.
Secondly ....I'm very soft-hearted to old Vermonters and especially those who respect wild life....but in the photo I found of Lawrence ....I think you'll see why I'm going to say F-EM ...both of 'em.
Yeah, Dave is an old crank. But probably not for long. Pete will probably kill him in time.
