Not just King Phillip the Fair of France, but also his “pet” Pope Clement V (rumor has it he had the previous less compliant Pope poisoned).

Jacques de Molay the last Grand Master of the Order of The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon (the Knights Templar) supposedly demanded that the King and the Pope meet him “before the Throne of God” to answer for their crimes, and both died within the year.

Yeah, that Pope was, I believe, the first of the Avignon French Popes and the one before him was beat up so bad by Philip the Fair’s thugs he died.

The late Medieval Papacy was a blueprint for how NOT to run a church.
