Mermaid fever sweeps Israel beach town of Krivat Yam as many report sightings of fabled creature

Are mermaids real? Dozens of people in Israel have reported sightings of the mythical half-woman, half-fish. Take our Poll Mermaid sightings?

What do you think people are really seeing in the ocean in Israel?

A dolphin or some kind of fish

A woman dressed up as a mermaid

Nothing, their eyes are playing tricks on them.

A mermaid. If all those people say they've seen one, it must be true! Related News Articles

Mermaids really do exist. So say a new wave of believers who swear they’ve seen the fabled fish in the flesh.

In the town of Kirvat Yam, Israel, where dozens of people have reported mermaid sightings, a $1 million reward is on the line for anyone who can prove by photo or capture that mermaids do exist, reports the Jerusalem Post.

“Many people are telling us they are sure they've seen a mermaid and they are all independent of each other," Kirvat Yam town council spokesman Natti Zilberman told Sky News.

Many of the sightings have taken place at sunset, attracting crowds of tourists and locals alike, hoping to snap a picture of the mythological creature.

"People say it is half girl, half fish, jumping like a dolphin. It does all kinds of tricks, then disappears," Zilberman said.

Witness Shlomo Cohen was one of the first to identify the mysterious creature, according to IsraelNationalNews.com.

"I was with friends when suddenly we saw a woman laying on the sand in a weird way,” he said. “At first I thought she was just another sunbather, but when we approached she jumped into the water and disappeared. We were all in shock because we saw she had a tail. At least five of us saw it and we all couldn't believe it."

The town council, which is offering the reward, insists that the mermaid mania is not just a marketing ploy to attract tourists, though it does hope tourists will come out to try their luck at the $1 million prize.

"I believe,” Zilberman said, “if there really is a mermaid, then so many people and tourists will come to Kiryat Yam, a lot more money will be made than $1 million."

I guess they did! I believe it 100%, and I’m going to draw out a whole big bunch of money and take a trip to Israel and stay at an expensive hotel and spend a lot on souvenirs.

Um...could you ask the mods to pull your post and then could you repost it with a warning? The pics at that first link are really interesting, but there’s a banner at the bottom of the page with porn pics in it.

Oh, I totally agree. Thanks for the pictures of the dead ones, but now I’m going to Krivat Yam in Israel with lots and lots of money to spend, so I’m sure to see one alive!

If you have lots and lots of money to spend in the tourist traps, you can come with.

The townsfolk will be so happy to welcome us, I’m sure!

Good heavens! Don't scroll down too far in the first link in Post #14 unless you have your porn filter on.

Come to think of it, if you have the filter on, you probably won't be able to access Post #14.

Hmm... Interesting. I just took another look. I don't get any porn in the article I linked in #14... Possibly because I have script filter add-ons installed in FireFox. (NoScript, among others)

I'll ask the moderator to pull that post.

Old News... we all know about mermaids existence. Here is one picture from a recent South Africa mermaid and there are more at this link. WARNING- THERE is reported to be porn at the bottom of this page, though I don't see it.

But that's not all- here is a picture of a 1400 year old mermaid that is in a Japanese temple, and there are more pictures at this link.

The wonders of the world don't all have to do with having to plow fields naked to make rain!

Cool...I suspect the reason I saw it and you aren’t is that I’m using IE. Well, that’s one more reason to switch.

If you do switch to FireFox 3.5, and would like advice about some add-ons to grab, send me FReepMail.

I’ve been using it so long now (as well as the other Mozilla products Netscape Communicator and SeaMonkey) that I don’t even realize how exceptional it is any more. I also get pretty sloppy sometimes- I’ve now got fifty tabs open simultaneously, and 23 add-ons active. It’s amazing how much it can be stressed and still perform quickly even on this older 1.6GHz,512Mb computer.
