It would be nice if, when we want to use some tags for emphasis (such as <em> to denote someone else's comment), or bolding, if we didn't have to then revert into full HTML and manually add paragraph breaks. It shouldn't have to be all or nothing. For instance, the blogging software Wordpress automatically converts line breaks to paragraph tags, while still allowing the addition of HTML for other things.

Is there some reason that we couldn't have the same capability here? It would make commenting a lot less painful.

I believe JimRob has proprietarily coded software running FR. I say type out the HTML tags. At least it’s basic HTML.

I do agree that using something like quote or em would be nice, but I don’t like to mess with the big man’s toys.

You seem to be missing my point. I already do type out HTML tags, and have no problem with it. I'm just saying that we shouldn't have to add <p>...</p> to every paragraph.

As long as mods and Jim are looking at this issue, I might comment that “spell check” is acting weird, often saying that EVERY WORD I type is wrong.

It’s an all or nothing system. If you have no other tags, it’ll take whitespace literally. If you use tags, then all of the other associated tags must be used (p, etc).

You don’t.

I never do.

I've tried using <pre> & </pre>, they work but completely blow the line length so you wind up with paragraphs running out the right margin half way to New York!

Embarrassing to say the least.

I’d like to second this.

Or third, or whatever it’s up to.

Maybe I'm not getting it, but what's so hard about typing <b> </b> around text for emphasis, and typing <p> at the beginning of each new paragraph?

I'm so used to it, I do it without realizing that I'm doing it.

It's just a handful of tags to learn (3 actually), and you can learn and use more if you want to.

I've been to other blogs and forums that use a different system. Might be simpler for some easy things (though not always the case), but then there are other tags that they won't recognize at all. It's a trade-off.

You do realize that the /p tag is optional, right? Not necessary at all.

Probably would require some coding, as this site seems to be custom made. The only feature I miss is an edit feature.

And, conversely, the ping feature that is unique to this site is one of the best ideas I've seen on a forum. It's the one feature that's lacking in phpbb.

Before you start coding, introduce a spelling error to your comment and run it through the spell checker. It will add all the <p>s and <br>s you need.

Thank you. I know that. The purpose of this post is to complain about it.

There's no reason that it has to be that way. It could be coded to automagically include the paragraph tags even if someone wants to use other tags. There's no good reason this should have to be done manually, since it obviously has the capability to add the breaks automatically, if there is no HTML in the comment.

Sigh...

There's nothing "hard" about it. It's just a pointless pain in the keester, for no good reason, to have to put in paragraph tags on all my grafs if I want to add any HTML at all, and it introduces an opportunity to introduce more errors.

Why make us do it? That's what computers are for.

I’m a hack, using your earlier mentioned option may be the best way, tho the spellchecker option soound good too.

I do it the old fashioned way, HTML that is. insert this and insert that.. It’s a pain especially if you post huge pieces that require lots of marking up and such. not sure how else to get around that for now.

Of course it would require some coding. That's what I'm requesting. But it shouldn't require much. It clearly already has the capability for comments that don't have HTML. All that should be necessary is to change a conditional so that it doesn't stop doing it just because it encounters an HTML tag.
