There's been a big fuss this week because Michelle Obama wore shorts. She's worn shorts before - to walk the dog, do stuff around the White House. But the photos of her wearing them in that iconic descending-from-Air-Force-One-onto-the-tarmac setting proved too much for the media. Obamas? Check. Summer news doldrums? Check. Controversy? Close enough. It was a story.
And people reacted. The Today Show's poll on whether she should have shown that much thigh got one of the show's biggest responses ever, with 83% pro-shorts. Local papers found "experts" to discuss the implications of the shorts for the Obama White House, international papers analyzed what it said about American culture, the blogosphere took up every angle from what this said about the objectification of women to the taxonomy of the shorts: Hot pants? I'm not going to get overly petty, but if there's any chance the First Lady is going to be photographed somewhere, she should look at little more "polished" than that.
Glad to see the Today show gloss right over that whole Death Care issue and get to the meat of the matter.

Her shorts are shorter than her daughter’s. Its a generally tacky outfit. I don’t care how much skin she shows but the question really is, WWC&SSAY? What would Clinton and Stacy Say?
That’s no First Lady, that’s just Barack Obama’s wife.
Next week, we’ll probably get a long-distance shot of her walking Bo while wearing funky fuzzy house slippers.

Who care what they [the first family] is wearing... There are much larger issues to deal with, other than OMG look at what they are wearing. Our Country is going down the drain & people are worrying about what they are wearing....
I dislike the Obama’s. I cannot help it. To me,she looks like an Amazon (for those racially sensitive, I remind them the Amazon is in South America). I think her taste in clothes is just awful. I believe her concept of what is entailed in being a first lady is wrong. I care not what she wears at home. Perhaps I am old fashioned but I want a GENTILE LADY FOR MY GRANDAUGHTERS TO LOOK UP TO. Case in point, Carly Fiorino. Boy, do I expect the racist, sexist comments!
Exactly. You are a temporary resident of the nation's highest office. Try show show some respect for it.
