Feds swarming garage sales and church bazaars?

When our founders created the federal government, I’m pretty sure they didn’t anticipate having its power reach into their carriage houses. Thanks to a particularly asinine piece of legislation called the Consumer Protection Safety Improvement Act, though, we now have federal inspectors threatening to start investigating yard sales and church bazaars. They say they’re just going to focus on thrift stores and Craigslist … for now:

If you’re planning a garage sale or organizing a church bazaar, you’d best beware: You could be breaking a new federal law. As part of a campaign called Resale Roundup, the federal government is cracking down on the secondhand sales of dangerous and defective products.

The initiative, which targets toys and other products for children, enforces a new provision that makes it a crime to resell anything that’s been recalled by its manufacturer. …

The crackdown affects sellers ranging from major thrift-store operators such as Goodwill and the Salvation Army to everyday Americans cleaning out their attics for yard sales, church bazaars or — increasingly — digital hawking on eBay, Craigslist and other Web sites.

Secondhand sellers now must keep abreast of recalls for thousands of products, some of them stretching back more than a decade, to stay within the bounds of the law.

Doesn’t get much dumber than this. How in the world did any of us survive to adulthood? And these people want to take over our health care.

Try being in our business selling products for kids/schools. These same regs hit us hard with anything that might be hazardous requiring testing and disclosure in print/web etc.

New regulations are also killing home based clothing sellers. They have to license and prove they are following government safety standards.

Here is one example:

The thrift shops need to file class action suits on this. Unless they’re shipping across state lines, it’s none of the Federales business.

This is just another effort to waste money and incur more debt while building the Bureaucracy. They are looking for creative ways to bankrupt the nation while they expand their dependency base. If these people are not armed now, they will be.
People better get involved to Town-halls, Tea Parties and elections or we will be looking up to Hati and scrambling to get there.

Way too many laws...How about a requirement that everytime these asses pass a new law requiring some kind of standard, anyone will be allowed to ignore the standard by having a notice on the item that says it does not comply with that law. Then the consumer can decide, and little people and businesses can continue to sell.

If the GOP had it in them, they’d be all over this. Of course, it wouldn’t surprise me if a majority of the GOP in the Congress voted for the law.

This is a perfect issue to highlight the stupidity of the nanny state which we have now in DC. Feds regulating yard sales and church stores...is this the America you want? Also, how does this affect eBay?

Is there anything at all this administration isn’t tightening control of??

Seems like they are trying to strangle the economy.

I was in Goodwill this morning and they were looking through the children’s clothing and removing anything with metal buttons, snaps, zippers, etc. Why? Because they MIGHT have traces of lead in them. This means you can’t buy jeans, winter coats, back packs, etc. There were very few sweaters left.
There will be some kids freezing their butts off this winter, I expect...

Wow, they must have made a really really big agreement with China. First we get rid of all the used cars, then the used clothing, appliances, etc...

You are forced to buy NEW!! New I tell you.

Oh, well, as long as it’s short of drawing their guns at garage sales, no problem.

I wouldn’t doubt the big box stores lobbied for this because they are hurtin’ and see them as competition now.

Great idea in theory, but in practice the purpose of these laws is to give government weasals more control.
