ST. LOUIS (KWMU) - The death of an overweight eighth-grader during football practice has revived the debate over testing of children's hearts before they engage in sports or other strenuous activity.

Anthony Troupe Jr. collapsed last week on a suburban St. Louis football field. The 13-year-old known as "Big Ant" for his 6-foot-2-inch, 383-pound body was pronounced dead at a local hospital an hour later.

The cause of death won't be available for several weeks pending test results. But the boy's weight, heart and family history are suspect.

Anthony's father collapsed and died two years ago at age 45 from heart disease.

383 pounds at age 13. Yeah, the basic problem here is that we need to start heart testing for every student athlete in the country. Riiiiiiight.

Long as it's free, why not? I say give 'em all MRIs and CAT scans too. Long as somebody else is paying', I'm all in favor. Whoo-Hoo!!!

13 years old? 383 lbs? That's just wrong. Prayers for his family. Losing a kid is the toughest thing a parent can do.

Back in the day when I was a high school and college athlete, we were required to have physicals before every season. Is this no longer the case?

I think they still do need to have physicals, but they do not include EKGs, etc.

Probably not, but when a 13 kid pushing 400 pounds walks into the examination room I’m thinking a red flag might go up.

Let’s just test all the 13 yr olds that weigh over 350 pounds and have a family history of sudden death.

How much could that cost?

"The cause of death won't be available for several weeks pending test results."

Though this guy is at the top of the suspect list.

Sarcastic, but you are on to something. That boy was a walking red flag of health conditions, whether he was playing football or not.
