Black hair still tangled in politics (Multicultural barf alert)(FR mention)
Mpls (Red) Star-Tribune ^ | 8/30/2009 | CATHERINE SAINT LOUIS

Silky, straight hair has long been considered by many black women to be their crowning glory. So what if getting that look meant enduring the itchy burning that's a hallmark of many chemical straighteners. Or a pricey dependence on "creamy crack," as relaxers are sometimes jokingly called.

Getting "good hair" often means transforming one's tightly coiled roots; but it is also more freighted, for many African-American women, and some men, than simply a choice about grooming. Straightening hair has been perceived as a way to be more acceptable to certain relatives, as well as to the white establishment.

"If your hair is relaxed, white people are relaxed," the comedian Paul Mooney, sporting an Afro, says in the documentary "Good Hair," which won a jury prize at the Sundance film festival and comes out in October. "If your hair is nappy, they're not happy."

(snip)

Anyone who thought such preconceptions were outdated would have been reminded otherwise by negative reactions to the president's 11-year-old daughter, Malia Obama, who wore her hair in twists while in Rome this summer. Commenters on the conservative blog Free Republic attacked her as unfit to represent America for stepping out unstraightened.

Believe it or not, the president pays for his own expenses out of his $400,000 annual salary, including food, drinks, clothes and dry cleaning.

The president is presented with a weekly menu, and they buy the groceries. ( uncle sam grabs the tab for official dinners.) Conversely, there is a fully stocked kitchen in the family quarters, and the family can also order take out.

If you could afford $725. sandals, you would probably buy them too!

In the first place, no white person forces a black person to straighten their hair.

They do it by choice. Most of my black friends aren’t worried about straightening their hair.

They are happy with who they are, as they should be.

Oh, please. White women with perfectly straight hair get curly perms. What does that mean? They hate being white?

It all depends on what makes a woman feel that she’s looking good, and the politicization of hairstyles has got to be one of the silliest things I’ve heard.

Pam sure was a hottie. Loved how she used the ‘fro to hide her weaponry.

Heck no! At least not those unbelieveably ugly $725 sandals.

I didn’t much care for the looks of those sandals either, but everyone’s tastes differ.

I did like the expensive tennis shoes she wore, with the metallic bit on the toe area. I just think these are foolish things for people to make ugly remarks about, especially when it comes to their personal looks.

Once I remarked that perhaps we should all post a picture of ourselves on the thread.....no one commented but one lady removed her picture from her Photobucket link on her page the next day!!

People should concentrate on what’s important.

Smooth silky black hair is the realm and domain of the Asian woman - the rest of you must forsake it forever!!! Unless you marry a pretty Asian woman then you can spend years and years running your fingers through her black, silky hair!!! Some people have all the luck!

I’d buy those ugly ass Bruno Mali shoes before I bought those skanky lookin sandles. She must have bought them through the GAO cause they really retail for $19.95 at Wal Mart.

Thank you mockingbyrd. I see many voice ‘our’ opinion but then others mock them.

I can't tell you how upsetting the forum sometimes is to me now. I often have to bite my tongue and just get off certain threads.

Can't recall it being like that a few years ago!

If he's going to make the claim, he needs to provide the link; otherwise the whole argument is invalid.

Three of those were Jim Robinson threads.

Do a keyword search on ‘fashion police’ or Michelle and read through some of those threads!

You may be correct.

But they'd look a heck of a lot better than those do!

Oh, I agree with that. Mine would be much prettier!!

Sadly, people pay the big bucks for the ‘name brand’.

White Americans have no interest in what Africans do to their hair.

“What’s wrong with black women with big Afros? Riding zebras?”

(If you’ve ever seen “Eddie Murphy Raw”, you know why that’s funny.)
