HELLENIC PYRAMIDS

It is not well known that there are Greek pyramids . There are more than 16 pyramids spread all over the Greece. The oldest one is the pyramid of Hellinikon

INTRODUCTION

The existence of pyramids in Greece was unknown to most people until recently, and even today not much is known about them. For example, the pyramid of Hellenikon, near Argos, is older than the Pyramids of Egypt. In fact, Pausanias (in Graeciae Descriptio) says that this pyramid was a memorial in rememberance of the first battle fought by soldiers bearing shields!

Pyramids in Greece are usually smaller than the ones found in Egypt (exeptions are a few sculpted pyramids) and they are in a rather poor state.)

There in no clear evidence as to the use of pyramids in antiquity. Archeologists believe that they are memorials or observation-communication towers (phryctoriums). Only for the pyramid at Helenikon there is a reference by Pausanias for its probable purpose.

Most Greek pyramids have not been studied yet, with the exception of the pyramids at Hellenikon and Ligourion which were dated and studied by Dr I. Lyritzis of the Academy of Athens.

In this section we also present some sculpted pyramids about which there is some controversy as to whether they are man made or natural occurences. We think that this matter should be further investigated because, for example, visitors at the pyramid at Taygetus mountain are surprised by the abrupt change in rock texture at the base of the "pyramid" (At the level of the base of the pyramid the mountain side abruptly becomes rather smooth)

Cool. But how come their pyramids were so much crappier than the Egyptians and them Mayan or Aztecs or whatever they’re called?

Hellen's pyramids are not luminesecense but yellow in the sun!

I've spent the entire summer exploring them, well actually one day. I did get my face slapped.

The Pyramids of Caral in Peru are as old or older than the Egyptian pyramids.

Also, there are more pyramids in Mexico than all the rest of the world combined.

Arvanitopoulos believes that the monument dates to the Mycenean era (1600 BC-1100 BC). Christos Tsountas, Manat, Curtius and Donaldson believe it is from the 6th century BC. The most common belief, supported by Leak, Ross, Fischer, Clark, Fraccia and Lord was that the structure was from the early Hellenistic era, more specifically late 4th century BC...

The new and experimental method of optical thermoluminescence was employed to date samples taken from the pyramid. It was determined that the samples which had been tested had been quarried at about 2720 BC ± 580 years. The method used, while scientifically sound, has yet to be calibrated. The results, producing a date considered too early for the structure, have not been accepted by the archaeological community. In the absence of a full excavation, the exact dating of the structure will remain unknown. Adamantios Sampson, archaeologist and Ephor of Antiquities, writing in the Magazine Archaeologia kai Technes (December 1995) repeats the accepted line that "the excavational data and our knowledge of the protohelladic period in the entire Greek area exclude the construction of similar edifices in such early years".

... a fair question although “crappier” is not the appropriate word to compare pre Colombian and Egyptian pyramids to the ones in Greece.

The relatively poor condition of the ones in Greece could be due to many factors— the number of destructive invasions, the climate, etc...I think the climate would have to be the major factor in the higher rate of decomposition of pyramids in Greece.
