EMP Attack Could Wipe Out U.S.
NewsMax ^ | September 9, 2009 | By Ronald Kessler

Posted on 09/09/2009 8:34:08 AM PDT by Fennie

The federal government is doing "nothing" to protect against an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack that could wipe out American civilization, Dr. Peter Vincent Pry, a leading expert on the subject, tells Newsmax.

For only $200 million to $400 million, the government could protect a key element of the power grid to keep electrical power from being wiped out for years, according to Dr. Pry, a former staff member of the congressional Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse Attack.

Yet neither Republicans nor Democrats have been willing to spend that small sum, says Pry, who is president EMPACT America, which is meeting in Niagara Falls, N.Y. this week to spotlight the scandal.

A single nuclear bomb exploded over the Midwest would generate an electromagnetic pulse that would destroy the chips that are the heart of every electronic device. While military and intelligence networks may be shielded against EMP, most of the rest of the country's technological infrastructure is not.

An EMP attack would wipe out personal computers and the internet. Cars would not start, gasoline pumps would not work, and airplanes could not take off.

“At least my John deere tractors that use a fully mechanical injection system will still run.”

I really like that idea! I’m thinking that with this “no progress” administration we may have to start riding horses (which might be OK!) or just walking everywhere. It won’t matter, I guess. We won’t be able to afford fuel and we won’t have jobs anyway. I wonder if we’re going to be living like Mad Max. :)

I have some questions:

First, all of the doomsayers describe airplanes crashing and cars that will not run.

OK, I can see that it is possible to ruin all electrical equipment that is hooked to the power grid.

But items that are free standing? I don't think so.

Take airplanes first. Modern aircraft, even light twins and singles, can take a direct lightning strike.

True there have been a few instances of crashes caused by lightning but all of them I am familiar with had a compromising mechanical problem, such as a defective fuel vent, etc.

It is also true that in several cases of lightning strikes, the aircraft lost some or all of its navigation equipment.

However, the basics such as alternator power, engine power, etc., kept right on.

We have all seen pictures of aircraft with holes in the skin and with the radome blown off, but the airplane still made it to a safe landing.

How is this possible? Because the electrical equipment for the most part is shielded by the metal skin. The electrical charge runs over the outside of the aircraft but little or none gets to the inside.

What will happen when a large number of composite airline types are in the air remains to be seen as in most cases the first thing to blow are the composite parts on an otherwise all metal aircraft such as the radome, etc.

As for autos, it has long been known that an automobile is one of the safest places you can be in an electrical storm unless that storm includes a tornado. But there again it is the wind and not the electrical discharge that causes the danger.

Why? Again, the lightning follows the outside metal.

I doubt very much that equipment not attached to the grid is in serious danger. Autos, aircraft, emergency generators not in operation at the time, computers not attached, computers in the warehouse or in stores packed in boxes...not likely.

This goes in the same drawer with global warming. Some of it is worth mentioning. The rest of it is hysteria.

The TV program “Jericho” a couple of years ago ... was an idea of what a small town would be like. Interesting show.

It was FICTION.

besides, we don't have to worry about stuff like that. Superman and Ironman, spiderman, The fantasic four, Captain america etc. will save us.

Since you are one of the only ones who understand:

“George Bush Jr. and # 13”

13 is the number of death and rebirth, death and reincarnation, sacrifice, the Phoenix, the Christ (perfected soul imprisoned in matter), and the transition from the old to the new.

Yet I will introduce another series of impossibility of coincidence. We have President George Bush Jr. who is 13th cousin of Britain’s Queen Mother, and of her daughter Queen Elizabeth and is a 13th cousin once removed of the heir to the throne, Prince Charles.

Officially becoming the 43rd President on December 13th of a nation who had originally 13 colonies, who celebrates its independence day July 4 which is exactly 13 days after Summer Solstice on June 21. In this calculation, June 22 is counted as ‘Day 1.

Whom some consider this country to be the 13th tribe of Israel. Ephraim is the 13th tribe of Israel. Bush who rules from the White House which the cornerstone was laid by a Masonic Ritual on Saturday, October 13, 1792, when the Georgetown Lodge No. 9 of Maryland gathered for the ceremony, which is surrounded by 13 approximately straight lines of avenues which L’Enfant planned for the city which were symbolic of the stripes of the national flag, laid out to receive the impress of the stars, which is also is laid out in a Satanic Pentagram. The south point which represents where the spirit of Satan is to dwell.

The new Commander-in-Chief faced the sacred Egyptian obelisk, known as the Washington Monument, and took the inaugural omens and when you convert the 555 feet of height into inches, it comes out to 6660, which reveals the number of the beast imbedded in the sacred geometry of the structure.

Whom our leaders have allowed the Illuminati to divide The United States into seven different regions geographically. Each region has a 13 member leadership council that coordinates with the local leadership councils.

That fiction was based on an hypothetical occurrence and human nature. . It was a guess. Having a better foundation than so called” global warming”. Look how many people are believing that.

Be flippant, if you like ... unfortunately when it happens, it will too late ...

Perhaps you believe the comics heroes are about as true as the possibility of this happening in America.

With the open borders it is ... but, by the Grace of
God ... we have not had another “911” or worse.

I pray you are correct and there will be no “Electro Magnetic pulse.”

Search on EMP filters, emp power line filter, and the like. Lightning filters come close but are designed for a much longer pulse, so a lightning filter won’t help much with HEMP.

Glasstone’s book The Effects Of Nuclear Weapons has a good unclassified discussion of EMP and HEMP.

http://oai.dtic.mil/oai/oai?verb=getRecord&metadataPrefix=html&identifier=ADD004450

is one hit from such a search.

You’d be better off investing in lightning filters, much more likely to happen to your electronics, and personally I’d invest in food, ammo, and medicine if you are worried about an EMP attack. Having a hardened TV won’t help if your local transmitters and cable companies are changing all their interface gear after a strike.

"Oldness" is not an important characteristic. They are all the same in this regard, as it is the little metal wire mesh that keeps the microwaves IN that also have the effect of keeping the EMP OUT.

You know the wire mesh that is visible inside the glass on the door? That is the Farady aspect. That wire mesh encompasses the entire device and is what makes them a tool against EMP.

I used the word "old" simply because folks rarely offer new ones on Craigslist. It does not need to be a working device, as the thing that makes it valuable to us is the wire mesh.

On the other hand, you can buy the mesh separately. It is expensive, though.

You could buy a filter for your incoming power, that would catch the surge from the line from the transformer to your house.

The EMP is a radio frequency pulse, with a phenominal amount of energy behind it. Your filters that you have around the house and the home are designed to remove spikes from hair dryers, your AC firing up, stuff like that. We are talking about noise well below 1,000 hz. We are talking of ramp rates that are millions of times slower than an EMP. Unfortuntately, these are all but useless where EMP is concerned. Think of trying to stop a speeding bullet with a butterfly net. Chances are that the butterfly net will be left completely functional, it won't even know that the spike sailed through it.

If I were to attempt to design something to be EMP resistant, it would be expensive - even schotky diodes that are used to eliminate ESD spikes are going to be to slow and sluggish to respond to an EMP pulse. The only thing I can think of would be to build a Faraday cage around your home, with each square being less than 1 sq. ft. in size. Don't have the time to do the calculations, but your mesh would have to be fairly tight - and your cell phone will not work in the house anymore, chances are you'll also loose your wireless router too. Bluetooth may still work in your home, but I would expect the range to be drastically reduced. I think you could keep your windows, if you covered them with a metalic film - not sure on that one.

Here’s a link to Chapters 4&5 of Tech Manual 5-690, it has lots of geeky detail on how to keep HEMP out of your stuff. $ has EMI filtering, which is applied to the HEMP pulse. C5 is filtering, grounding, bonding, and Faraday cages for HEMP protection. Lots of military gear is hardened.

"...So do metal garbage cans. I think you’re wasting effort...."

I'm obsessed with personal economy. If something is offered for free, my ears perk up, and since metal garbage cans are rarely offered for free, and microwaves are indeed offered regularly, I opt for the microwave. As for effort, the only effort I expend is driving to the offering person's house and picking up the old device from the curb.

Also, they oftentimes get put on the curb during "heavy haul day" so I try to cruise the hood on those days.

I know, that’s why I was suggesting investment in ammo, food, and medicine.

It’s not the energy so much as power, the risetimes being so high that any heating tends to be adiabatic, causing localized problems.

There are HEMP filters available for comm lines and low-power AC lines, but they cost a LOT more than your “surge protector” with its MOVs or varactors. Those will protect your stuff against one, maybe two lightning pulses (not a direct strike).

You can use any microwave, but it must be grounded. That means a wire affixed to the microwave's mesh and running to a pipe that goes under the ground.

Thus, the motorhome may not work.

If you Google "Farady Cage" and "EMP" you will get a lot more info than I can provide.

"I pray you are correct and there will be no “Electro Magnetic pulse.”

We've set off enough nukes during the 50's and 60's to know that this EMP pulse attack stuff is nonsense.

Worrying about a nuke being detonated a couple miles above a major city is ALL you need to worry about, because if you are anywhere within 25 miles, you are dead. You'll be dead soon within 50 miles, and if you're outside of fifty miles, get as far away as you can as fast as you can.

Considering that if we are on the receiving end of a nuclear attack, many cities will be hit, and no matter where you are, the fallout is likely going to kill you soon anyways.

So unless you have a real good bomb shelter way out in the boonies 100 miles from anything with enough food and water, a good air filtration system, generator and fuel to run it for a year or more, You're gonna die.

Yep, buy an older car without a computer.

Sure - but the refineraries that refine your gasoline are computer chip based - and the trucks that deliver gasoline have computer chips, and the stations and pumps have computer chips. So if you have a car without a chip you've got a few tanks worth - at best. Maybe an old model t that can run on moon shine would work...

Try putting a wireless phone in one and see if it rings. Also try a cell phone or two. The microwave box is designed to stop the microwave freq (I think 2.1 gig but I don’t remember) and may not be as good a shield at lower freqs, like 900 MHz or higher freqs. They have to have a transparent window, and that will be a shield at a narrow range of freqs.

Aluminum or copper foil, though, can make a continuous conductive barrier all the way around your item with no, or few, leaky gaps, windows, or seals.

Come to think of it, your conventional oven may work well, too. You can test it by sticking a cell in it and calling it (I use a large shielded room with RF absorbing foam and a Watkins-Johnson receiver and a set of biconic antennas to do RF shield measurements, but sticking a cell inside works too).

LoL! That “mesh” is plastic on most microwaves these days. It doesn’t keep nothing “in”. The “microwave” produced by the microwave oven only covers a tiny area within the cooking area. On real cheap ones it doesn’t even cover the cooking area, which is why they have a rotating table so things cook more evenly.

It is my understanding that the airplanes of the services have hardened protection of the vital instruments.

In the 50’s there were not all the electronics or the same forms of electronics ... it was the early days of transistors then.

You are correct about the kill zone. The point of the high atmosphere detonations is exactly to not cause destructions of properties; rather it is to disable all of our current facilities in the homes, businesses in the basics of current life. I am one of those that live in the great fly over country. Thus it is worth preparing as best as possible. Rather than fiddle while Rome burns.

God bless America.
