Why are some men drawn to redheads?

A reader wrote in asking me why most men are "fascinated" with redheads. In this instance, I think "fascinated" is a nice way of saying "obsessed." She admitted to being a redhead, and, therefore, the object of such ardor. Columnist suggests attraction to redheads may be because they are a genetic rarity.
She's asked these men why they are so drawn to the crimson-haired, and the best she ever got out of them was "Redheads iz just hawt, yo!" This is true, but it is not the whole truth.
I wouldn't say most men love redheads. A sizable majority, sure. And those men who love redheads likely focus on them because of their genetic rarity. The universe makes only so many redheads, and so it makes an impression when a man is beauty-napalmed by one.
I have had a lifelong attraction to redheads: their alabaster skin, constellations of freckles, and combustible temperaments. This is an aberrant preoccupation.
Hair color is neither a dealmaker nor dealbreaker. I've probably dated 50 percent brunettes, 50 percent blonds. I love both, and I've never encountered the usual stereotypes affixed to their hair tones.
The blonds I've dated have never been stupid or vapid. In fact, many have been bookish and wickedly funny. Likewise, my brunette girlfriends have defied the standard definitions.
In my experience, blonds don't have any more fun than brunettes. The women who have the most fun are those women who give themselves permission to have fun.
So, how do I explain a personal craving for flame brains? I could blame biology, how it makes a certain evolutionary logic that Man would pursue those women who, by virtue of a few mutated chromosomes, stand out from the crowd.

Red Headed Woman Lyrics
Well, brunettes are fine, man
Blondes are fun
But, when it comes to getting the dirty job done,
I'll take a red-headed woman, a red-headed woman.
It takes a red-headed woman to get a dirty job done.

Great article. I can understand as after growing up in a town that had not a single black family residing in it I found myself completely smitten with black girls in college. I find all manner of women attractive and have had relationships with Latinas (you have to have a bit of courage to seriously date one of those), Whites (too bland for my taste, like salt free crackers. Salt free crackers, what is the point of such a thing), and Asians (I got tired of making myself out to be a bigger and bigger ass to see if I could get a rise out of them), but my eye always drifted to the ladies of the darker persuasion.
I do not know why I pursued them so vigorously. I chased one with almost stalker like persistence and finally won her heart and married her. Sometimes I wonder why I did not see all of the drama, emotions, and vaguely marked buttons and unmarked minefields coming. Thing is, I saw the vaguely marked buttons before I started pushing them. I knew the unmarked minefields were there before I started walking across them. One look into the light colored eyes of my cornrowed Nubian princess made it worth it. Would I do the same for any other woman? Of course I would...If she was Black!

The names elude me but don’t forget the “Laugh In” skit about Fred & Frannie Farkel(????) (who were both black haired) and their faithful neighbor who was a total red head, freckles and all. Fred used to say “I am out of town a lot and all my duties are taken care of by my next door neighbor”....Incidentally, ALL THE KIDS had flaming red hair and freckles....when introducing the kids, one of the older ones would pop up and say “HI” and the adults would respond “You sure are”......Corny but for the time it was ‘on the edge’....

You relate an interesting experience. I can’t fairly address what a male might find a attractive in a female attribute....mostly b/c there are so many.
But as a seasoned observer, I would venture to say that there is always a *hook* and for each of us it is different. For me it is height. Could be the best looking guy on the planet, but if he isn’t taller than me....fugetabouit!
Which is why I can never relate to the Sarkozy/Bruni, Joel/Brinkley, etc. things. Not until I read the *48 Laws of Power* that it became clearer.
Then as we mature, it isn’t so much the physical, as it is what it *between the ears*
