Who dumped 17 cats outside a W. Columbia pet shop?

WEST COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Workers with Pets, Inc. in West Columbia got quite a surprise Thursday when they arrived at work to find four cat carriers with 17 cats stuffed inside.
There simply is no room at the inn, so to speak. The no-kill shelter has more mouths than it can feed right now.
Pets, Inc. needs to immediately find homes for the cats that are healthy.
Workers at Pets, Inc. are looking to prosecute the person who left the cats. That person could be charged for each individual cat.
If you're interested in one of the cats or can provide a foster home for one, call Pets, Inc. at 739-9333. They're located in West Columbia.
If you have any information on who may have dumped the cats there, call West Columbia police.

Then maybe it’s time to humanely euthanize some of the older ones.
It kills me when we watch “Animal Cops” and these people spend thousands of dollars to get an animal healthy. THEN they tell us there are way too many animals and they need more money.

Excuse me, but isn’t their reason for existence to care for and find homes for unwanted animals? Why would they prosecute someone for dropping off unwanted animals? Would the “no-kill” shelter rather the person killed all the cats? What’s their “mission statement”?

I don’t see a crime here either, the person who left the cats was trying to do the humane thing or he/she would have just killed them.

So, while one may abandon a
new-born baby human at a fire station with "no questions asked", someone wants to
prosecute the person who left CATS at an animal shelter.
We live in an interesting country.

Probably the economy. People are having trouble taking care of there animals because of being layed off, etc.
Someone abandoned 4 kitties at my MIL’s and they were in her backyard for 2 weeks. She lives off a freeway so I ended up getting them together and taking them to our local animal shelton. Hopefully they will get a good home.
They said so many people are bringing in animals right now.

I could just be that the local SPCA charges a fee to accept a surrendered pet. If this is the case, it misght be that the person with the cats could not afford the fees.

EXACTLY! The shelter can’t have it both ways. Either they take all strays left with them OR they start euthanizing strays that aren’t placable.
To: aomagrat
Years ago, every time I found a cats or kitts (and I've found many) and tried to take it to a No-kill shelter, they tell me 'sorry, we're full--bye bye'. Kudos to the gutsy people who left the cats and just didn't have them put down.
(P.S. I have been volunteering at shelters for years now, and they take my found cats now)

IF the towns really cared, they’d be offering free spay/neutering....it’s a game. The animal people want their jobs, so they really don’t care if the population problem is solved.

If there are older cats who are healthy, then they can still be placed. I volunteer at at no kill animal rescue, cat/kittens/puppies/dogs shelter. There has been a number of cats abandoned also. I volunteer at the cat/kittens side, and many of the abandoned cats/kittens have been placed.=^..^=

Agreed. I was set to adopt a 10-11 y/o cat, but if fell through when the fosterers didn’t want to give her up.
To: Slings and Arrows
I had adopted a then 10-year-old jet black female cat, after another cat, a 15-year-old gray and white cat which I had been feeding outside the shelter, which was the center of a despute between which refused to take the cat in, but roam the neighborhood, including the cat shelter, then the shelter decided to rescue and foster her. I was going to adopt her, but she had to be put to sleep because of bladder cancer. So instead I have adopted this jet black female cat instead.=^..^=

Seventeen cats in four cat carriers? They must have been sardined in with no room to move. But, I guess, better than just abandoning them or killing them.
To: aomagrat
Abandonment of animals is getting to be a serious problem. We've had to tend to abandoned cats, dogs, and horses in numbers that stagger the imagination. Shelters have been inundated with animals and cannot take care of the numbers humanely. This is the sequelae of a bad economy. Folks have to take care of themselves before they can take care of the animals. It is folly for the shelters and veterinarians to take up the slack for the irresponsible animal owners of the US. In the last month I have had litters of puppies and kittens left at the front door of my clinic because the HS can't take any more and they require a fee for each animal left. Its bad I tell everyone to most people's disbelief.

My Dad in Detroit has three cat who have “adopted” him, people that have kicked out of thier houses.
He’s not a big cat guy, but when I take him shopping, he makes sure to get food for them. They are his friends on the back porch.

Morris, Fluffy and Oreo are his buddies. (For the record, I named the 1st two, Mrs. Springman named the last one.)
Just hope he doesn’t have to get anymore; also wish Mrs. S didn’t have allergies, would love to bring them here.
