I really think we need to start full-blown Secret Service protection for serious Presidential candidates much earlier in the campaign process. This sort of garbage discourages a lot of qualified people from seeking the office. And it would come to a grinding halt if all nationally recognized candidates had full Secret Service protection, with butt-grabbers and crotch-grabbers instantly arrested and hauled away for heavy duty legal proceedings and prison terms. Assault is crime everywhere, but a Presidential candidate has to keep smiling and acting like everything’s fine for the cameras every second he’s in a public place, and the perps are taking advantage of this to get away with a crime.

I just know that we have a serious problem with competent, upstanding citizens not being interested in running for President. That has scary implications for the nation. I believe Secret Service protection now kicks in for the two major party candidates right after they’re formally nominated at the conventions. I’m sure the butt- and crotch-grabbing comes to a grinding halt at that point. Why not bring it to a grinding halt much, much sooner? Expensive? Not as expensive as ending up with the increasingly skimpy choices for President that we’ve had in recent years.
