Fox wins first night of season: 'Heroes' falls, 'Big Bang' leads CBS (Leno last)

High ratings drama Monday night with a deluge of broadcast network premieres:

>> Fox won the opening night of the fall season for the first time in the network's history. The network aired the two-hour return of "House" (16.5 million viewers, 6.5 preliminary adults 18-49 rating), the medical drama climbing 14% from last year while most of its competitors declined.

>> CBS placed second in the key adult demo with its comedy block and "CSI: Miami" (13.7 million, 4.3). "Miami" was down 17%, though still beat ABC and NBC at 10 p.m. combined. "Big Bang Theory" (12.8 million, 4.6), however, managed to rank as the network's highest-rated show last night. "Big Bang" was in its new time period after "Two and a Half Men" (13.6 million, 4.4) and grew 28% from last year to hit a series high. Leading off the night, "How I Met Your Mother" (9.2 million, 3.5) was off only a tenth from "Big Bang" in the slot last year. New comedy "Accidentally on Purpose" (9 million, 3.2) lost less than 10% of its lead-in and did fairly well considering the intense competition.

Jay's tanking. Maybe NBC will can him, and then ABC can put him back at 11:30, to destroy Letterman once again.

It will be interesting if Jay gets a bump from Limbaugh later this week.

Wish they’re rebroadcast “House.” The show was riddled with weather warnings here, and I missed important scenes.

I think Rush said he's going to be on two nights. He's definitely going to be on this Thursday. And, he might be on Friday, or one day next week when he races on Jay's Eco Challenge course.

Rush said he's taping both on Thursday, IIRC.

Well, I saw the intro for it last season on NCIS. It didn’t strike me as liberal at the time. I’ll give it a chance.

Spoiler alert! You really didn’t miss a lot. House detoxed. Almost got a patient killed—again. Took his depression meds, and in his weakened state, let a thirty-something woman have her way with him in a love scene that wasn’t bad. She moves to Phoenix and breaks his heart—again because the Paxil, or something else, give House the energy to feel. (I don’t think it really does that but this is television) the energy to feel. He gets to practice again but the preview indicates that Huddy is restricting permission. The real medical science series begins next week and I can’t wait!

NBC has said they are keeping Jay as long as he stays at 1.5 or better. That keeps him from losing money for them.

Watched “Miami”, have ABC’s “Castle” on DVR. I like that one. Nathan Fillion (Captain Malcom Reynolds - Firefly) is not too politically correct.

"NBC has said they are keeping Jay as long as he stays at 1.5 or better. That keeps him from losing money for them."

It's a dilemma choosing who to root for here. Jay's probably the least liberal of the late-night hosts, but he's still pretty darn liberal. It is kind of nice that he's on at 10:00, putting many Hollywood actors, writers and production people out of work. It's also a nice way for Jay to get even with the writers who made his life miserable during the strike.

On the other hand, if 1.5 is the break-even mark, Leno's probably going to be able to score a consistent 4 or 5 share, which puts profits into the hands of the enemy - MSNBC.

The “Heroes” season premiere was last night?

One of my favorite shows, and although not actively looking for when the new season would start I was starting to wonder why I hadn’t seen any promos for it yet.

Sounds like a victim of VERY bad marketing by NBC to me.

I have heard that if Jay Leno tanks, its BAD NEWS for NBC, which is exactly why I don’t watch him. I’d love to see NBC finally fall.

I was wondering if it it would be worthwhile to create a blog dedicated to the moral “drop-outs” of each House episode. I like the show, but some things are dangerous in it.

Last night we saw a son pull the plug on his dad since House said “no brain left”. We saw House at first resist an adulterous affair with a married woman, but then indulge it. We saw House’s therapist treat without consideration for moral hazard. I guess that “moral sanity” is out of fashion. We saw a two-hour commercial for psycho-active drugs.

The biggest moral hazard of all? That was the assimilation of House into the amoral Borg, the big happy club, as a a requisite of his rehab. How Marxist.

You just must not have been watching NBC the last month. They’ve had at least one Heroes promo every hour for a long time, and promos on related properties like Syfy.

I don’t have any such problems. I want Jay to go and go quickly. Maybe that way a truly good show like Friday Night Lights would get a fair shake and be in a steady good time slot. As it stands now I have to wait until the summer to see it. I’m very bitter at this decision.

Jay's tanking.

The morning news show does cross promoting. The old goof reads off who would be on Leno tonight:

"Pee Wee Herman... the second week and he's already scraping the bottom of the barrel".

Oh, please. I enjoy House as good drama, but never expect anything remotely resembling morality on that show. That is, of course, the series’ greatest strength: an entire cast of flawed and morally conflicted characters, House being the worst.

It’s just entertainment, for adults with a good ethical foundation who enjoy something more than vapid sitcoms and shoot-em-ups.

If Leno succeeds, they’ll be filling primetime with the likes of Letterman, etc. One success, and all the network entertainment folks follow like sheep.

So I do not wish him well.

ABC is pushing the homosexuals raising children show, and it is not even a blip.

This literally is NOTHING that is even worth recording.

The networks have truly become the ghetto of amusment.

I LOVE Castle. I missed the entire season on TV, but managed to catch it on HULU. I guess I'll be watching the first episode there as well!

I also missed the entire season of Fringe as well, and only caught the pilot before the 1st season was pulled... I was going to rent the DVDs, but since there were 7 of them, it was actually cheaper to buy the set at Borders using a coupon. I watched the entire 1st season over the weekend. I'm looking forward to seeing Fringe on Hulu as well! Mark

Yes, he started to, but was interrupted by the return of the superhero.

The last scene with the superhero and the mute cello player was deus ex machina. 7.5 on the vapidity scale.

No argument there, but it does set up interesting scenarios for the rest of the season.

Different writers, maybe? I wouldn’t accuse most House episodes of vapidity.

What I find amazing about ABC is that later this year they are going to start broadcast of a remake of the 80s series “V”. It’s about a bunch of aliens that visit Earth under the guise of hope and change. They look just like us. They only want some of our water in exchange for a whole slew of scientific information. In reality, they *really* want to capture us for food and kill us all. Oh, and they are lizard people that use cloned human skin to mask their true identity.

Every single commercial I have seen for that show almost seems as if they are using various things that Obama spewed during his campaign as the basis for the bad guys to win over the planet.

In my mind, a bad episode of House is better than almost everything else on tv. I liked it, but my husband thought it much too predictable.

Loved Big Bang too.

I was trying to figure out where the psych hospital really was. The road in and out might have been the entrance to the Carrier Clinic. The building was not. The interior courtyard could have been the old Har Sinai Temple building in Trenton.
