If you prefer your motorcycles to look like something out of a futuristic bikers from hell story, the 2010 Triumph Rocket III Roadster ($TBA; Early 2010) is for you. Available in all of one color — we'll let you guess which one — the Rocket III boasts the line's most powerful engine yet, a 2.3 liter three-cylinder beast good for 146 horsepower and 165 lb-ft of torque. Add in Brembo brakes with ABS, a set of 43-millimeter upside-down forks, twin Kayaba shocks, and traffic-stopping looks, and you've got one helluva ride.

Rode one, it’s a beast. It took a few minutes before I felt comfortable opening it up. Tip: make sure your pointed where you want to be when you wick the throttle.

Intersting choice of names. The Trident was a re-badged BSA Rocket 3.

2300 cc in a 3 banger is pretty big.

The Lucas Electric motto: “Get home before dark.”

Lucas denies having invented darkness. But they still claim “sudden, unexpected darkness.”

Lucas—inventor of the first intermittent wiper.

Lucas—inventor of the self-dimming headlamp.

The three-position Lucas switch—DIM, FLICKER and OFF. The other three switch settings—SMOKE, SMOLDER and IGNITE.

The original anti-theft devices—Lucas Electric products.

“I’ve had a Lucas pacemaker for years and have never experienced any prob...

If Lucas made guns, wars would not start either.

Did you hear about the Lucas powered torpedo? It sank.

It’s not true that Lucas, in 1947, tried to get Parliament to repeal Ohm’s Law. They withdrew their efforts when they met too much resistance.

Did you hear the one about the guy that peeked into a Land Rover and asked the owner “How can you tell one switch from another at night, since they all look the same?” “He replied, it doesn’t matter which one you use, nothing happens!”

Back in the ‘70s Lucas decided to diversify its product line and began manufacturing vacuum cleaners. It was the only product they offered which didn’t suck.

Quality Assurance phoned and advised the Engineering guy that they had trouble with his design shorting out. So he made the wires longer.

Why do the English drink warm beer? Lucas makes the refrigerators.

Alexander Graham Bell invented the Telephone.
Thomas Edison invented the Light Bulb.
Joseph Lucas invented the Short Circuit.

Recommended procedure before taking on a repair of Lucas equipment: check the position of the stars, kill a chicken and walk three times sunwise around your car chanting: “Oh mighty Prince of Darkness protect your unworthy servant.”

Lucas systems actually uses AC current; it just has a random frequency.

Three cylinders actually balance better than 4.

“Tip: make sure your pointed where you want to be when you wick the throttle.”

Reminds me of a friend long gone from this Earth now, but about 35 years ago he put an altered VW engine in a Morushu (however it’s spelled), and didn’t have it aimed where he wanted it to go. He survived that, but managed to live to old age and expire inspite of himself.

IIRC, Yamaha produced a line of air-cooled in-line 3 cyl crusers which had endless trouble with the center cylinder overheating.

Those were the XS 750's. As bad as they were, the subsequent 4 cylinder XS 1100's based on the same design were rock solid.

I would think with water cooling this could be easily overcome.

Add more flow to the hot cylinder.

The only thing that worked reliably on the electrics was the AM radio

After 2 MGA’s, 3 MGB’s, a Triumph TR4A, a 1966 Norton 750 Scrambler, and a 1967 Triumph Bonneville I can say they were a little bit of a problem, but when the sun shines and the tops down you get your revenge. The proof is in the cruise. Wish I had the Norton back....

I had a really sharp; looking GT6 that I bought when I got back from overseas. An electrical fire burned the entire main wire harness. Thank God I was smart enough to open the bonnet and pull the battery cable, and I had to light off a fire extinguisher that I had mounted below the drivers seat. What a mess! The best the manufacturer through a dealer would do for me was to install a toggle swith for the starter since the ignition control was fried. What a disappointment......but a really fun car to drive, I STILL dream about having that car.

Oh man, great video.

I've got a '95 Triumph Thunderbird 900 with a liquid cooled 3 cylinder engine...great fun...bullet proof...I've put over 20,000 miles on it.

Beauty is, it's an upright position, which I like...can lean over through the twisties or hang back for cruising...sounds like that Rocket has enough room to do the same thing.

I'm gonna have to get to the dealer to test ride that Rocket.

Back in the ‘60s I had about three Spitfires, one after the next. They just didn't last. The Lucas electrical system was part of it, with the weird positive ground, but the whole was even worse than the sum of its parts. SU carbs that were never in sync and always hung up on those oil-dampened pistons, steering that came uncoupled on the highway once, a gear shift that more than once disappeared into the transmission hump, and rod bearings seemly made of wax they would fail so often. Why did I put up with it? Because when they ran well, there was never any car I've known since that was as responsive or more fun to drive.

There is a memory lane. Vega GT 5 speed pretty slow, but economical. Owned during the Jimmy Carter days of misery.

I bought a 1980 Honda CX 500 back in august to get myself back into two wheel traveling, I outgrew it in weeks and bought a brand new almost no miles on it Yamaha V-Star 1300 Tourer in galaxy blue and brushed silver less than a week ago, I have ridden it less than 25 miles I think and here I am in Alaska and winter suddenly showed up. My next ride will more than likely not be any earlier than next april unless we get an early spring thaw. At least I get all winter customizing it, and why did I buy it so late in the season? because next years model did not have THAT color, I had to have it. There is something different about British bikes I cannot put my finger on, like they are from a different dimension or something. I would buy it but I would probably strip as much metal off of it and do a carbon fiber job, or just wrap carbon fiber arounf all the pieces, everything. Anyhow I think its cool, its not a Harley fer sure. I would go with the Touring model, looks like a good competitor to the Goldwing.

The 2009 Yamaha V-Star 1300 Tourer, fuel injected, water cooled, belt drive. This is EXACTLY what my bike looks like without me actually taking a picture of it, I bought it the middle of last week and have only rode it twice so far.

Actually no. I have had one since Sept. 2005. They are as aggressive or as passive as the rider wants them. There is not slop in the throttle and the power is definitely there if and when you need it. They also handle amazingly well in the pouring rain too. I would like the ABS on the new version though.
