It was, as a famous Pittsburgher liked to say, a beautiful day in the neighborhood.
The world champion Steelers were kicking off their title defense against the Titans. The world champion Penguins were down in D.C., Stanley Cup in tow, to meet the president. Native son Dave Wannstedt was at practice on the South Side, preparing his unbeaten Pitt football team for the weekend's win at Buffalo.
That was September 10, 2009, and here's how beautiful it was in this year's Best Sports City: Pittsburgh's Pirates did notrepeat, did notlose that day. (So it was an off-day. Beauty is in the eye of the long-suffering beholder, OK?)
"It's been quite a year in Pittsburgh, with the Steelers winning the Super Bowl, the Penguins winning the Stanley Cup and our local college football and basketball teams having successful seasons as well," Mayor Luke Ravenstahl says. "Sports fans in Western Pennsylvania have had a lot to be proud of these last 12 months. Pittsburgh truly is the City of Champions once again."
In fact, it may always be sunny in that other city across the state, but citizens there can lay claim to only one title team during the past 12 months. Over herewhere an elected official changed his name temporarily to "Steelerstahl," just so, y'know, there was no question of which team he supported when Baltimore came to town for an NFL playoff beatdown in Januaryyou've got two titles, basketball tournament teams aplenty, and a bowl-bound and Backyard Brawl-winning football team.

On ice or grass we’ll kick your ass.

Uh, what happened to the Pirates this year?
Man I miss my home town. Thank {diety} for NFL Sunday Ticket, superfan, and 56” TVs... :-)
And hi-definition TV!
Best minor league farm team in all of MLB!!!(sarcasm, and yet not)
They don’t count.
Thanks for the pingy (waves Terrible Towel in airborne’s direction)...
All I can add is yoi and double yoi!
Martin an official Burgh ping?
The people are friendly.
Great business opportunities.
Good bars that are safe.
Excellent restaurants.
The city itself is beautiful.
Maz certainly deserved the kudos for his game and series wining home run in the bottom of the ninth but Hal Smith never got the credit he deserved, imho, for his 3 run blast in the bottom of the 8th that brought the bucks to a 9-7 lead. New York had been up 7-6 until that shot. the runs scored disparity between the two teams in that series was just crazy. great series for sure.
Mega dittos !
Me too !
At the end of the game,Philly's Richards intentionally ran into the Pens goalie. Typical Philly behavior when losing.
Behind the net, Hartnall got into a ‘scrum’ with Kris Letang, and when they separated, Letang came away with his finger bleeding!
Post game interview - Kris Letang refused to say exactly what the Flyer had done, instead saying to “go ask him and then let me know what his answer was”.
It was pretty clear to me that Hartnall had taken a bite out of the Penguins players finger!!
I suppose when the reporters ask him about what happened, they should ask him if it's true that Penguins taste just like chicken!
Mmm, mmm, mmm????????

Black and gold never fold...
Lucky for Pittsburgh it has very good sports franchises cuz it has little else. What a crap hole.
My dad was 13 and was SHOCKED that the Pirates were able to come back and win in such a dramatic fashion.
Well, every large city in the South is a ghetto, which Pittsburgh is NOT.
And yes, the Lord was on your side...for some reason, beyond my comprehension.

I have yet to see a story (doesn't mean there isn't one) of a hockey player who moves to Pittsburgh and doesn't fall in love with the town!
When Mario was drafted by the Pens, he didn't want to go, not even wanting to put the jersey on draft day.
Now he owns the team, loves the city (and they love him) and is happy to raise his children there.
Bill Geurin was worried about moving his kids when he was traded in February 2009. He has not only moved his family, but he took a pay cut in order to stay in “da ‘Burgh”!
And still most people think of steel mills and billowing smoke stacks polluting the air when they think of Pittsburgh.
We both know it's not like that any more - hasn't been for some time.
And with the new Consol Energy Arena set to open in 2011, the new Heinz Field, and .....
..... “COMING SOON” ..... in August 2011 .....
The 31st Annual ‘National Disabled Veterans Wheelchair Games’... (featuring me, among 600 other wheelchair athletes)
Pittsburgh has a great future ahead of it!
Limbaugh's Fault!
You’re entitled to your opinion, but may I ask... when was the last time you were in Pittsburgh?
LOL! No it wasn't, it was Bush's fault.

I’ve lived a 1/2 hour drive from Pittsburgh all but 2 years of my life...(that’s 50+....sssssh don’t tell)
If it isn’t too much to ask...
You always post the most beautiful pictures of Pittsburgh.
Could you please grace this thread with one of da ‘Burgh at night?
three years ago.
But Rush is a die hard Steelers fan!
Makes me hope he doesn’t buy into the Rams.
Every time I visit it gets a little better. And in this day and age, that's saying something.
Well, from me to you ...

Have a better day tomorrow!
I'm having a fine day today, thanks. I live in Northern California. Aside from the politics of a liberal-controlled state, it's really a tough act to follow. Pittsburgh is just a distant second for me. As for NHL hockey players wanting to stay there, most of them are Canadians so there ya go.
LOL! So you're saying that even "crap hole" Pittsburgh is batter than anywhere in Canada?
FWIW, I've been to Long Beach and Fresno. I enjoyed both visits very much, even though it was wicked hot both times!
And I live about a 4 mile drive from Pittsburgh. closer to Harrisburg really, but I live in the woods, near the Appalachian Trail.
No. I'm saying I don't care what Canadian hockey players think...about Pittsburgh or much else for that matter except hockey. BTW, I'm a Flyers fan and Philly's a way bigger "crap hole" than Pittsburgh.
And, yes...I know the Flyers lost tonight...but I don't think Hartnell bit him at the end of the game. And I don't much like Pronger but I'm glad we've got him.

Could you please grace this thread with one of da Burgh at night?
Here's one for you. Left as a link because it's pretty big.
I remember that issue - in fact, that was an image in my mind when I wrote my previous post!
My Dad was at this game. He said people were jumping into the Mellon Square fountains in celebration!
Thanks! That makes a nice background for my computer!
