A friend of mine shoots small bore competition.

He was in search of the best cheapest practice ammo.

He made a rim thickness gauge out of an old 22 Mag case and a Micrometer.

First he fired for accuracy to select the possibles.

Then he checked 50 of each with the Rim thickness gage.

It turns out that Federal Bulk pack 36gr. Hollow points have the most consistent rim thickness.

He fires this exclusively in a Suhl match gun for practice then goes to the Wolf for the actual match.

I’m still trying to figure out how you found enough ammo to go shooting.

I had a remington golden sabre go squib on me while doing double taps. The second follow up shot bulged the barrel on my beloved 625. After almost 400 bucks and 6 weeks in repairs and shipping I still had not heard anything from my seven or eight calls with left messages to Remington. I will not buy one of their ammo products again.

Maybe just me , BUT I’m finding Remington 9mm. and .40 to be a lot DIRTIER than it used to be . Getting a lot of missfires on .22 long rifle also .

I have no problems with my SPR453 semi-auto. Probably because it is the RUSSIAN made model and will not missfire if doused in a mudbath . Like the AK or SKS.

> What is a “Crickett rifle?”

It’s a small, single shot bolt action .22 rifle for kids.

"I think the quality control on .22 is not that great."

There is no such thing as good, cheap .22 ammo.

Make up yer mind! Ya want it cheap or good? Ya can't have both.

Arggh. I never said I wanted “cheap” .22 ammo. I do not even own a .22. Guns scare me. ;-)

Just kidding. I have a wonder 9 and .223.

I do think people just think - what the heck .22 ammo should be cheap. Well i guess not after thisblew up on this fellow. I wonder if the feed ramp on his Crickett rifle needs to be polished or something. Maybe it jammed. Sounds like a paper thin casing.

Scary stuff.

The cricket is a small 22 LR bolt action rifle made for wee shooters.

Like seven or eight year olds who are just learning to shoot.

Thanks. I was imagining some .22 rifle with crickets chirping then people blasting away in the dark. ;-)

I kind of guessed it was for youngsters.

The cricket is a small 22 LR bolt action rifle made for wee shooters.

It comes in Pink for little girls.

Will be sure to stick with federal ammo for .22's. I just noticed I have a 550 package of remington .22lr golden bullets. It says 36 grain plated hollow point. I assumed they were brass, not gold, but does the term golden bullet mean they aren't brass, just painted, or colored metal to look like brass? It doesn't say they are brass anywhere on the box. The box has never been opened.

Firetalker, do you have the numbers from the box of .22 shells. My federals have a printed on number, like a batch number, but I don't think any of the numbers on the bottom of the remington box are a batch number.

I know a little girl who has a pink cricket on her Christmas list. Will certainly make sure they stay clear of the Remington ammo. I don't think I'll put any of it through my stevens I've had since I was 6, either. Thanks for the heads up.

Old post, but oh well. I like the Federal Bulk packs. They shoot really well for not being match-grade ammo.

I always have problems with the Remington Bulk Golden Bullet, and only buy them because right now I buy what I can. 20-30 percent of the Remington bullets produce “flyers” that are an inch or two off of my groupings. Plus, I have at least one misfire in 10 rounds. I pull the bullet, rotate, then it fires. Never seem to get a full-blown dud, but lots of first-hit misfires.

I was shooting just yesterday with the GB after not having to shoot them for nearly a year, and I was like, WTF when I’d be on center, then the bullet would hit way off. Didn’t have that problem with the Federals. I don’t have an awesome competition rifle, but have a bull barrel and 4# trigger on my Ruger 10/22 that shoots better than I do!

Remington does not make good .22 ammo...

Years ago, I tested all of the bulk ammos for accuracy, performance. Remington's Golden Bullets won hands down in both categories from several weapons.
