We always have some of the various sandpipers around, but now the winter migrants are starting to trickle in.

These are Greater Yellowlegs, Tringa melanoleuca

My dog wanted to go out...What is your excuse for being up so early?

Thanks for making the morning view so nice, by the way.

I slept a couple of hours earlier, I have no firm schedule, LOL. Old age is wierd! I want to go hunt up some pics this afternoon, after I take another nap!

I agree the 70’s are different from past years...those naps just keep happening!

2 hours working in the yard, a shower, and a nap just happens when I sit down to read!

Beautiful!

Waders and shorebirds are among my faves.

When these guys are little, the odds they must overcome to reach the size and age of your fellas are inspiring.

The reason I am usually able to catch your fine photos. I get up early. Of course if I was on the ping list, I wouldn’t have to miss any of them. With the outside temp in the teens, FL is looking good right now. and Northern beats Southern FL in my book. Lived in both, and appreciated the four seasons in the panhandle more than the sometimes oppressive humidity of the Southern parts.

It would be hard to tell the difference between the bird’s right leg and that reed in the foreground if I were his breakfast. (Third pic)

Thanks!

Not much bigger than my hummies that are traveling your way. Take good care of ‘em, hear? ;-D

Thanks. Just Thursday, before the temps plummeted we observed large flocks of Sand hill Cranes, moving South. They were searching for and finding Thermals to gain altitude while they talked to each other with their distinctive sounds. Probably headed for Texas.

Dang, they don’t look like they have much meat on them. How many does it take to make a meal?

Dark-eyed junco aka "snowbird"

There here and it's snowing in Iowa.

I have a normally busy hummingbird feeder and usually have hummers still feeding at it at this time of the year. They feed pretty heavily prior to migration.

But this year they have already left. They seem to have migrated a month early and we're already seeing snowbirds. By the way, we're getting snow right now so both species seemed to know what was coming. I don't know where snowbirds go in the warm months but they're already back for the winter.

They're kinda' cool as when some of the seed spills from the feeder into the snow they dive right into the snow to get it.

And a good morning to you too!

Our hummers also took off early this year. And with good reason. We are in the low 50s and not going a lot higher today. Drizzly, gray, generally unpleasant. I guess fall is really here.

Thanks for the reminder the sun will return.

Here's a related species, a lesser yellowlegs. Shorter beak, more abrupt joining of the beak and head.
