LITCHFIELD In an apparently desperate move to satisfy a craving for alcohol, accused substance abuser Paul Hosey drank enough hand sanitizer Oct. 2 to raise his blood alcohol over the legal limit.
Hosey was living in an alcohol-free Alternative Incarceration Center in Waterbury awaiting prosecution on various crimes when someone noticed his condition, and at least one empty bottle of hand sanitizer.
He was taken to Saint Mary's Hospital where he was treated and then returned to the center.
His attorney, Donna Candella, said a judge's order Friday to send the homeless man to prison could be the best thing for him because it's his only chance at the intensive substance abuse treatment he needs.
"Being in jail may be the only way for him to tackle his personal demons," Candella said. "He is uninsured and lacks a supportive family. State budget cuts have closed treatment programs. In jail, he will get help."
A test of Hosey's blood alcohol put the level at 0.092, enough for police to cite him for violating a zero tolerance included in his placement at the residential facility as an alternative to prison.
Hosey, 22, whose address is listed as the city streets of New Milford, had been free on a written promise to appear on several pending cases in Litchfield's Bantam Court.

How does that even work?
Right.
Help.
Well, at least his mouth is germ-free.
Turn a can of Lysol upside down, press the spray button until you exhaust the propellant gas; punch a hole in the bottom and swig food-grade ethanol.
Grocery stores now need to keep vanilla and almond extracts under lock and key, because they were being stolen (by rogue bakers and chefs, I’m sure).
Methinks he needs to find another lawyer.
