Is Jason Campbell being spare criticism because of his race?
10.12.09 | Perdogg

Once again, the medicore Washington Redskin offense fails to perform against the Panthers in a loss after being up 17-2.

There is plenty of criticism of Jim Zorn, but none of Jason Campbell. There has been plenty of criticism of Tony Romo and lack of winning the big game. Nor was there ever any lack of criticism of Eli Manning.

I am tired of hearing that Jason Campbell has had x number of coordinators in x years. So what, you are a big league QB. You have been in the NFL long enough to know what is required, get the ball down field.

I hate to bring up the subject of race, but living in the DC metro area, there has been no honest debate or criticsm of Jason Campbell.

His numbers so far this year are not bad, QB rating of 90.35.

Eli Manning's is 111.71 and Tony Romo's is 86.45. Donovan McNabb numbers are high, but he hasn't played a lot this year.

Just wanted to know what you all thought of this.

ACtually, Campbell is the one who made his race an issue. Last year — when he was as lousy then as he is now — he said he was trying to improve his performance by “talking with other black quarterbacks in the league.” Can you imagine what would have happened to a Flacco, Romo, or any other young white quarterback if he said he was only talking with other white quarterbacks in the league?

You hear constant calls for the veteran back up Collins to play. My observation is Deadskins fans are unleashing their frustration on Snyder.

I honestly feel uncomfortable bringing this up, but there has been very little criticism of Jason, at least in the local media. Tony Romo is hammered all of the time, and for good reasons.

First, I am a huge Jason Campbell fan. Secondly, I don’t think it has to do with his race.

No, I don’t think any problem has to do with any one’s race, just how it is being reported in the newsmedia.

As Rush would tell you, “The media wants to see a black quarterback succeed and they’ll lie about the statistics to make it so.”

I don’t know where you’re listening to football commentary, in the places I listen to and read about the best anybody says about Campbell is he doesn’t stink as bad as Russell.

With Romo he is the QB of the Cowboys so he will get lots of media attention. Also he has done major choke jobs in playoffs or with a spot in the playoffs on the line. Romo does bring attention to himself with his choice of gf’s especially taking the well publicized trip to Mexico during the playoff season.

At least he can complete more than 2 passes in a game.

Jason is an adequate qb for a team that is excellent in all other respects. That's not good enough for the Skins.

They have an excellent D but their play strategy stinks, and it all starts with Zorn. He is not ready for prime time.

Fire Zorn and replace Campbell whether he's black or white. The defense deserves an offense of equal skill.

Is that a rhetorical question? All of us in the DC Metro area know that any criticism of Campbell isn’t PC. Campbell has all the physical tools, but he is not an NFL first team QB. He is indecisive and does not get the ball off fast enough. He also has a hard time reading defenses and making good audibles.

I am not a Campbell fan...if his first option isn’t open, he panics...

I don’t hate him or think he sucks, but clearly, as Rodney Harrison said, should be a backup in the NFL, not a starter.

Apparently, he needs to consult with Donovan McNabb, Vince Young or David Garrard, not Peyton Manning or Philip Rivers...this is the crap that DIVIDES us, not makes us one.

The league is so PC it makes me vomit as their stars rack up arrests.

Geezus, every time a black quarterback struggles or plain out sucks, it’s always because of his race. Jason Campbell stares down his recievers, can’t audible worth crap and doesn’t check down his recievers. There are many white quarterbacks that also do the same thing. Was upstate NY critical of J.P. Losman because he’s Hispanic or because the guy also stared down his recievers?

But IMHO, this may be a pattern with a lot of young black quarterbacks. Since Randall Cunningham, a lot of black quarterbacks in the junior ranks emulated him. There’s been 2 generations of black quarterbacks that depended on being their feet when the protection broke down instead of checking down to their halfbacks, tight ends and fullbacks. Maybe poor Jason Campbell thought he could scramble his way out of trouble instead of checking down.

McNabb learned the hard way how to check down and stare away from his intended reciever. Hopefully, on his new team, Jason Campbell will do the same, leading them to a Grey Cup victory.
