Wal-Mart and Amazon.com trade price cuts on books

NEW YORK – An online book special offered by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is turning into a full-fledged price war with Amazon.com.

Wal-Mart got things started Thursday, offering $10 prices on such upcoming hardcover releases as Sarah Palin's "Going Rogue" and John Grisham's "Ford County," a cut of 60 percent or more from the regular cost. Wal-Mart will also offer free shipping.

Amazon.com, the largest online bookseller, matched the $10 price, prompting Wal-Mart to take its offer to $9. By Friday morning, Amazon.com also had priced the books at $9.

The price cuts come at a time when Seattle-based Amazon.com and other sellers have been charging just $9.99 for ebooks, a price that publishers worry is unrealistically low. The reductions also make it increasingly hard for independent sellers, which can't afford such large discounts, to compete for the most popular books.

Here in Arkansas, I just tried to order online at walmart, but it said I could not buy it “due to state restrictions”.

Hmmm....

Too bad they didn’t cut the price down on the latest Gabaldon Outlander book. Maybe at $9 I wouldn’t have felt so cheated.

I got the same thing in Ohio.

Same for South Carolina. I sent an email asking about this. If I get a response and if I remember, I'll post the answer here.

I haven’t checked. Buying “stuff,” not just online, is not in the budget at this time.

Diana is very familiar with Amazon independent sellers, hopefully she will pop in when she gets a chance to weigh in on this.

I’ve been selling on Amazon for eight years now. I’ll just let the Big Dogs rip each other apart while I make a killing on the crumbs, LOL!

As soon as I can get ahold of Sarah’s book on the second-hand market, I’ll be selling it. I should be able to get quite a few remaindered copies as I live in LibTard Land, and they’ll do all they can to send them to the discount bins, ASAP.

Conservative books really hold their value. Liberal authors lose value quicker than a GM car driven off the lot, LOL!

Here’s my little on-line shop if anyone is interested in browsing!

Regarding the “state restriction,” apparently Wal*Mart had a problem with their web site. I just ordered Sara’s book w/ no problem.

I just tried again and it still won’t let me order it. I will try again tomorrow. Then, I will order mine from Amazon. That is where I ordered my Mom’s from.

Thanks. It just worked. 8.99 + tax + no shipping. Amazon would have charged shipping unless I got over $25.
