GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - Gonzales Police want to talk to a man they say left a prized stallion tied to a stake next to a cage of pit bulls. Detectives say the pit bulls somehow got out and attacked the defenseless horse.

Police say the horse and the pit bulls were on the same property. The dogs' owner was put in charge of caring for his uncle's horse, Prince, when he passed away. But on Saturday, police say the pit bulls somehow broke free and went after the horse.

When the veterinarian got there the horse was still in shock. Prince had injuries to all four of his legs, stifle, and a laceration on his neck. Detective Steve Nethken says when officers arrived on the scene, the three pit bulls were locked in their cages. But their owner, Keron Landry was no where to be found.

Detective Nethken says it is possible that Landry broke a city and possibly a state law. "We're going to explore both of these laws. But, we have to talk with him first about what occurred and get his side of the story."

If you know where Landry may be, call the Gonzales Police Department at 621-8300.

The veterinarian told police Prince was treated on the scene and it appears he will make a full recovery.

>> defenseless horse

Huh? I’ve seen a horse drop kick a dog across a barn. Guess with a pack of dogs, it’s a bit tougher to do that.

Pit bulls are good at hanging on to a limb that’s try to kick them away. In fact, I once had an attacking tomcat hang on to my ankle as I try to kick it away — Ifinally managed to grab hold of the beast’s front leg and fling it into a cinderblock wall, but that required the old opposable thumb trick, which horses can’t do (and still the beast came back at me!). I still have scars from that scuffle, almost 20 years ago.

Primary defense for a horse is running away. Kicking doesn’t have full range of motion and the rope will limit the horse’s ability to angle his body so he could kick. Once facing his attackers and backing away he’d be at the end of the rope - ability to kick behind him but not in front of him where he needs it. The more the horse tried to get away the more firmly his head was held in place toward his attackers - if the rope was tied low then his head was literally held low enough for the dogs to attack his throat and no way to get away but try to thrash with limited motion.

Thanks. I’ve been around horses since I got my first one at age 12 (I’m now 65); the wife still owns one.

A light just went on - I’ve NEVER tied a horse up so tight that he couldn’t pull loose in an emergency. I guess Delbert never got a good briefing when the horse was dumped off.

I’ve been thinking more too. My knowledge is quite old -I used to exercise horses as a teenager. I made some assumptions without knowing how long the rope was. I assumed it was short based on the damage but then you wouldn’t tie a stallion’s halter with a short rope to a pole like that and just leave. You wouldn’t tie it so tight that he couldn’t get away. Normally a frightened horse can break free from a tether because the catch connecting the horse to a halter isn’t meant to secure 800 plus lbs of fighting flesh. (the ones I worked with were 1000lbs to 2200lbs. The trainers used to remind me ‘never get into a tugging match with a horse, you’ll end up lying on your back when the rope breaks’ (i.e., the halter, the clasp, the rope itself, what the rope is tied gives way etc.) The fact that the dogs were back in the cage - well, who put them back and didn’t see to the horse? The dogs must have had to have been pulled off the horse - they wouldn’t maim it and just get bored and go back in their cages. This story just reads odd. Maybe the article is not well written and sort of gives an odd impression.

From a story last November:

• Keron Landry, 22, 1934 W Worthey Road, Gonzales, on one count of non-support. Arrested by the task force and transported to the courthouse where a bench warrant fee and back child support were collected, and a new court date given.

A citizen, less than upstanding?

“A citizen, less than upstanding?”

Seems with stories like this that irresponsible, idiot dog owners are a common thread, much more so than the breed of dog involved (so says the CDC, anyway).
