Would You Give Your Pet CPR?
nbcwashington ^ | Oct 22, 2009 | KARL PARKER

There's no doubt about the love we have for our dogs and cats.

But, when push comes to shove, just how far would you go if your best friend was in a health crisis?

Let's get to the point.

Your pet is injured and needs lifesaving air.Question is, could you bring yourself to put your mouth to his snout?

58-percent of people surveyed by the Associated Press and Petside.com would be at least SOMEWHAT likely to perform CPR on their animal in a medical emergency.

The survey showed women were more likely to deliver those rescue breaths than the men.

But, would YOU?

The survey also shows many people simply aren't prepared for pet emergencies.

Only 20-percent of those polled actually have a first aid kit in their homes.

And 54-percent admit, they don't have a fire evacuation plan for their pets.

Greenies are a type of chewy treat that have vitamins and minerals and also serve as a sort of dental hygiene tool. Our dogs love them.

Let me put it this way - if I saw any democrat that needed one, I would pick up my pet and give her CPR instead.

Depends on the circumstances. 16 yr old dog that is mostly blind and deaf, I’d cry my eyes out and hold her. 2 yr old dog that aspirated a chunk of weenie.. Absolutely.. I’d even do the hind lick.....Uoops that’s a punchline. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Our Rottweiler does the hind lick on our smallish cat about daily. And the cat likes it. OK too much information ahead........The cat lies on the stairs so that she has a backstop. Yup not making this up.

That 30:2 is not the latest per our recent schooling...:o)

. Scratch the 2. We’re being taught by our first responders an medics to just do the compressions.

If I have spare person to assist I will stick with the 30:2 concept till I see more on the new an improved.

Guy at work dropped an I got to see one of the small defibulators used.

They WORK !

I have one in my personal blow out bag that I keep in the truck now. Good piece of gear to spend cash on. Get the training if your company gives ya one.

Wouldn’t need to even think about it except how to do it.

I know in people however CPR has changed to no longer do breaths but just chest compression.

Funny you should mention that. I just saw a show where the said that your body's bloodstream has 8-10 minutes of oxygen so you don't need to stop to do the breathes but I wouldn't bet my life on that. I wish I could remember the show.

When my Brother's two dogs got their collars caught when playing around, one of the dogs lost consciousness.

My Brother gave the dog Mouth to Mouth and got her breathing again. She lost some Brain Cells and was not
“quite right” after that, but she survived. I would do the same in a heart beat.

If you wouldn't do the same, give the dog to someone who would.

I tend to think our society had become overly germophobic, due to media hype.
I walk my goldens every day, I know their snouts get into some undesirable stuff, that’s just dogs being dogss.
However they lick me, my grandkids (right across the face sometimes, LOL) etc and we don’t go to any special pains to keep everything sterilized.
I certainly don’t think we are any more sickly than the average family.

Without a doubt. A year or so ago, I took a Cat First Aid and CPR course given by the American Red Cross. They even had stuffed kitties with inflatable lungs to practice on. And I took a book and DVD home to use as a refresher. I’d recommend this to anyone with pets. (They had a dog course as well.)

LOL.

They have a bit of an ususual relationship.

My big lab and the cat have a “thang” too.

My smaller lab mix just wants to eat the cat.

My cats wouldn’t need CPR. All I would have to do for either of them is open a can of tuna.

I saw this late...but I would definitely!!! My husband’s retired FireFighter so he would be better at it. I’d be freaking out too much, probably. Hey...I HAVE caught their puke in my bare hands before.

I can't think of one reason why I wouldn't give CPR to a pet.
