Mentor teacher pleads to sex charges
Lake County News Herald ^ | October 23, 2009 | Tracey Read

A former music teacher for Mentor Schools has admitted sexually assaulting a high school girl during a 16-month period.

Barry Valentine, 35, of Mentor, pleaded guilty Thursday to 16 counts of sexual battery — one for each month the assaults occurred — in Lake County Common Pleas Court.

He now faces up to 80 years in prison and/or a $160,000 fine when he is sentenced Dec. 7 by Judge Vincent A. Culotta.

Valentine repeatedly sexually assaulted the victim from July 2007 through February 2008, Assistant Lake County Prosecutor Mark Bartolotta said.

“At the time, she was 15 and then 16 and he was 33 and 34 years old,” he said.

As part of the plea deal , the prosecutor agreed to recommend Valentine serve no more than 10 years in prison. Prison time is not mandatory in the case.

Not excusing ANYONE.

But.

When all these women teachers (in the news) are busted for “having sex” or “sexual encounters” with minor boys, I cannot remember it ever being referred to as “sexually assaulted the victim”

REM: not excusing ANYONE.

I am going to check in to this thread every so often, and others like them, to see if priestly celibacy played any role in this case of child molestation..........

Maybe we should ban teaching because it promotes sexual abuse??

I’m not saying that it was right but strange as it seems, sometimes thing work out.

I grew up in a small town a long time ago. This happened in my town, “At the time, she was 15 and then 16 and he was 33 and 34 years old,”. We all knew they were completely and totally in love.

She was a very mature young woman and an honor student. She graduated on time at age 18, they married and moved out of state. She went to university and became a teacher. They have two kids, are grandparents and are still married today!

You’re correct there is a double standard in these teacher/student sexual misconduct cases.

It doesn’t matter that it worked out.

The teacher abused his position and violated the trust of the parents that sent their children to school expecting teachers not to seduce those children.

Teachers must maintain aloof and not engage in romantic relationships with vulnerable children. The girl may have seemed to be mature for her age but trust me a 15 year old is not possibly mature enough to engage in a romantic relationship with a 16 year old let alone a 33 year old.

I personally am in favor of single sex schools. (all boys and all girls schools) Education has a much better chance of happening if sexual tension is removed from the equation.

Well he pled guilty so I guess he is.

But for an unbiased opinion I guess I will deffer to the ladies.

It may or it may not. There are same sex attracted teachers who prey on students as well.

To quote from the Crystal Gayle song, “Here I go once again...” It’s getting hard to get these teacher/student sex scandals straght, as there seem to be so many or them.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
