For a myriad of reasons, I have spent the last few months watching a movie most every weeknight. I have finally gotten my money’s worth from my Netflix account.
But, lately I have had trouble finding movies I think I will like. I scour Netflix and am having a hard time finding movies that interest me, though I know they are out there.
My interest runs from war movies to action flicks to quirky indy films to foreign art things.
Some of my favorite movies I have seen the past few months are Defiance, all of the Sean Connery Bond films, Sleeper, The Right Stuff, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Riding Giants, a Hard Day’s Night, and a few foreign artsy films whose names I don’t recall.
By far my favorite movie I have seen lately is Everything is Illuminated.
I have no interest in horror flicks, romance movies, teen gross out flicks or most movies made in the 1960s.
Could anyone be so kind as to suggest a good movie or two?

I just watched Deliverance for the first time. I watched the director’s explanation AFTER I watched the movie. I suggest watching the director’s explanation first unless you need an adrenaline rush. [The scenery is awesome. I live near the Chattooga River.]
I like Bruce Lee, Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Chuck Norris, Bruce Li Martial Arts movies. [And I collect Martial Arts movies, even the ‘no name’ ones . . . some are not worth the cost of a blank DVD.]
I’ve begun to watch those ‘60’s/’70’s movies with Steve McQueen. The Sand Pebbles, The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, The Thomas Crown Affair, Bullitt, The Getaway, Papillon, and The Towering Inferno are considered his best.
And every film John Wayne was ever in. Even the “bad” cowpoke movies have redeeming value.
(Sssh! Don’t tell any FReepers but there’s a Streisand movie - What’s Up Doc - that is one of the funniest, silliest movies I’ve ever seen. Mostly because Buck Henry wrote it. Ryan O’Neil is in it, too. It’s a family favorite and we quote it often regardless of Babs’ politics. Can’t be beat.)
Skooz - after reading all these suggestions, the preponderance of male hormone dominated recommendations is over-whelming - geez, all the WAR MOVIES, guys - and I do like a good war movie every now and then - but in case you are someone who has actually given birth at one or another time in your life, might I suggest more gentile, chickified viewing: anything Austen, BBC period stuff, Bronte, Absolutely Fabulous for comedy series (very Brit with inside Brit jokes abt Brit celebs), “Last of the Mohicans” (both versions), “Ivanhoe” (any version), and stuff from literary classics...cheers!
Or any Marx Brothers movie ...
Or any Monty Python movie ...
Or The Man Who Knew too Little with Bill Murray
Or Prisoner of Zenda with Peter Sellers, Peter Sellers, and Peter Sellers ...
Or Some Like it Hot with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, Marilyn Monroe, and Joe E. Brown ...
Or any Bob Hope movie, particularly the "Road Series" with Bing Crosby.
I have my own copy as well, a lot of people did not care for the Director or the concept of Spaghetti westerns, but his
Once Upon a Time in the West, I always considered as exceptional.

Sorry I can’t help you with the artsy genre (well, I’ll try after two
“Average Joe/Josephine” suggestions.

“The Longest Day”...which I tell inquiring parents is the film to
show your kids when they are 10-14 years old.
To prepare them for “Saving Private Ryan” when they are more like
age 15 or more.
2.
“Back To School”.
OK, it’s just for laughs, at the expense of academia as populated
by mostly stuffed shirts.
Still smile just thinking about Sam Kinnison’s (sp?) impassioned
portrayal of an over-the-top professor.
3.
OK, you’ll have to find this one on imdb.com or some website for
indy/non-US films.
Maybe 15 years ago I caught a Depardeau (OK, I botched the spelling, but
you know the French actor I’m referring to).
He portrayed a French cop that finds out his commander really has
murdered his (the commander’s) wife. Because his commander confesses
to him...but of course, the commander is above suspicion.
But still, it was a funny/ironic film.

I must admit two guilty pleasures involving Sean Connery, even if
they might exceed your film-violence threshold:
1.
“The Untouchables” as done by Brian DePalma
2.
“The Rock”
In the interests of full disclosure, as a biochem grad, it was sure
great escapism to see a biochemist/FBI agent save the day.
I used to catch it all the time, been years since I have seen it. I just need to purchase it and put in on the iPod...

If you have gone with ‘Firefly’, then you ought to move up to ‘Dead Like Me’, which has twice as many episodes, is even more internally connected, and has scripts easily as good, not to mention being bent, but not twisted. Uniformly brilliant acting, fabulous concepts, just a winner all the way.
Your other alternative is Wonderfalls, but you need to be somewhat twisted. It isn’t just bent.
(And I don’t mean sexually).

Hey, Blue - baby, you are definitely of the male race - but I like some of your pix - the Crosby/Hope movies are big around here (I have my 84 yr old dad living with us...) but the best of those are “Road to Rio” (Andrew sisters, etc..) and “Road to Bali” - the rest are lame...cheers...

“What’s up Doc” is a very funny movie but it is a changed up version of “Bringing up Baby” with Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn. “Bringing up Baby” is in my opinion the funniest movie ever. Cary Grant was brilliant in comedies and if you’ve never seen it I can’t recommend it enough. He was also hysterical in “I was a Male War Bride” and “Arsenic and Old Lace” (a perfect Halloween movie).
