Can you catch Alzheimer's Disease?

Alzheimer's caused by cold sore virus?

In a connection that sounds borderline preposterous, links have been accumulating between Alzheimer's disease and cold sores....Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1, a type that should not be confused with herpes symplex virus type 2 which is the cause of genital herpes. A growing body of research, suggests that the HSV-1 may also be responsible for the majority of Alzheimer's cases....

"There's clearly a very strong connection," says British researcher, Ruth Itzhaki, Ph.D., speaking one afternoon in her office at the University of Manchester, in northwestern England. A neurobiologist, Itzhaki has spent the better part of two decades studying the link between herpes and Alzheimer's. "I estimate that about 60 percent of Alzheimer's cases could be caused by the virus."

...Itzhaki and her colleague, Matthew Wozniak, Ph.D., published a study in which they searched for the presence of the herpes virus in people's brains. They found that it resided in 90 percent of the amyloid plaques.

"The link between herpes and Alzheimer's has been there for a while, but more people are starting to pay attention," says Howard Federoff, M.D., Ph.D., an expert on neurodegenerative diseases and the executive dean of the school of medicine at Georgetown University. "It's no longer just a curiosity."

They have previously implicated Lyme Disease in Alzheimer's:

Plaques of Alzheimer's disease originate from cysts of Borrelia Burgdorferi - Google Search

Chicken pox is the same virus as Herpes 1.

If you live outside a bubble, you get it.

Very little to do with “being clean.”

They found that it resided in 90 percent of the amyloid plaques.

What percentage of people in their 60s and older have that virus? If 90% of the total population has it, then it being in 90% of the plaques causing Alzheimer's isn't very significant.

"Yet another reason to stay clean."

Easy to say. I have herpes simplex-1 from infancy. I was born in 1936 and can assure you that no one knew a thing about viruses back then. I do recall that my mother had cold sore outbreaks from time to time as do I. She died in her seventies and if she ever had anything resembling Alzheimers, it wasn't evident to me or anyone else in the family for that matter.

Chicken pox is caused by the Varicella Zoster virus, a.k.a. Herpes Zoster. This virus is distinct from the two Herpes Simplex viruses.

I had never heard about any association of HSV-1 with Alzheimer's Disease, but evidentally there was a large slew of articles about it last December -- on google, there are thousands of articles -- it will be interesting to see further research about this.

I've read that it can be very dangerous in infancy, in fact, there was an article about a baby dying from HSV-1, here at FR.

VERY sad story, the headline claimed the newborn was killed by her own mother's kiss...

Your right. Shingles are from the chicken pox wich is Herpes Zoster.

I am all too familiar with both: post-infectious chicken pox encephalitis as a child, and, decades later, shingles and years of post-herpetic neuralgia.

Mercifully, I recently found a remedy: high dose Vitamin D, some 4,000 I.U. per day in the dry form.

Glad you found relief. I, luckily didn’t have any lasting effects but I know people who did. I have wonderd if it could come back again though.
