Vin Skully...The World Series misses Him.
Baseball Almanac ^ | A lifetime | Vin Skully

Posted on 11/01/2009 7:24:49 PM PST by maclogo

As I watch the World Series this year, I am reminded, once again, how I miss the poetic voice of VIN SKULLY. His lyrical narrative in describing the game was very inspiring and went far beyond the sport he was observing. A talented broadcaster with a Word Paintbrush. For those who remember, here are just a few more quotes he was known for.

(Please click Link for a just a brief reminder of his talent).

TOPICS: Sports
KEYWORDS: broadcaster; ihateitwhenimisspell; nokinscully; poet; vinskully; voice
His painterly descriptions of the game of baseball were truly a work of art.

I do believe it’s “Scully”. Not to be confused with the “skull”.. Chertoff.

Vin Scully - good, but he’s no Mel Allen.

Thanks for the post. Enjoyed the transcript of Koufax’s perfect game. Don’t watch a ton of baseball - a pipe smoker’s game, IMO, for it’s pace - but have followed it enough to understand your zeal for Scully’s live commentary.

Listen to Jon Miller and Joe Morgan on ESPN radio as an alternative to Buck and Tim “a legend in his own mind” McCarver.

Joe Buck is an a-hole. I learned a lot about baseball when McCarver was an announcer for the Mets; a lot I never new, like what happened during the lulls in the game. like how the infielders neeeded to know what pitch was coming. Cathcers run the game, which I awlays knew but not to the extent that Tim told us. Then he got a big head and wrote an unreadable book about baseball. He is now unwatchable.

Vince Scully and Jerry Dogget were a part or my life. I can still hear their voices.

Damn, those were the days.

When I wrote this post I think I had “K” on my mind...lol.

“So when he wrote his name in capital letters in the record books, that “K” stands out even more than the O-U-F-A-X.”

-Vin Scully, Sept. 9, 1965, at the end of one of Sandy Koufax’s perfect games.

The Southern California area sure has been blessed with some great announcers over the years with:

Vin Scully (Dodgers), Chick Hearn (Lakers), Bob Miller (Kings hockey), Dick Enberg (Rams, Angels), Bill King (when the Raiders were in LA)

In a series with Tim McCarver as a commentator, I keep the sound muted!

I used to turn the ABC, CBS, NBC sound down...and tune into Chick on the radio....

The guy is the best play by play announcer in the game.

Hands down!!

Scully was the best. Doggett was great, also. Ross Porter, meh. Living now in NorCal and able to listen to John Miller of the hated Giants. He’s just as good as Vin. Very easy to listen to.

Vin Scully, Mel Allen and Red Barber all greats. Vin Scully is the best that is still working. Hearing his voice takes me back to 1958 when the new team came to town.

My favorite day is Saturday, laying on the couch with a good book, chocolate chip cookies in the oven and Vin on the radio.

The best thing about Vin’s call was that he knew when to say nothing, or very little. Even on the radio, his spare descriptions were more than enough to get a vivid mental image of the action on the field. The new generation of play-by-play guys just can’t seem to STFU.

clintonh8r,

Vin knew when to sit back, be quiet and let the sounds of the crowd describe the moment. Sometimes in excess of 60 seconds. A class act with a knack for drama.

Wasn’t the World Series last month...guess I missed it who won and more importantly who cares?

Game 4 was last night.

IIRC - the first time a World Series game has been played in November.

And there are people who follow baseball and more importantly, who do care.

Even you asked who won? ;^)

I'm a bit late to this game, but let's not forget Jimmy Lennon.
