Who are your living heroes of today?
How about you?
I saw one of my heroes over the past weekend - on Halloween - Willie Mays. He's been a hero of mine since I was a kid watching the Giants play baseball at classic Candlestick Park.
My other hero (outside of my folks) is Father Pavone. The Pope made the list by default.
I can't think of any other living "heroes" right now. Just count them on one hand.
How about you? Who do you consider to be your hero/heroes and why?
Elvis!
My hero is my wife. I have had a lot of health problems lately. I was broadsided by someone running a red light, not quite a year ago. I was almost recovered from that when I was diagnosed with cancer. Surgery and chemotherapy have been an ordeal.
Through it all, she has been a tower of strength. Every time there was something I couldn’t handle, she stepped up and hit a home run. She used to be such a princess, and now she has revealed a degree of inner strength I never thought she had, like a coal miner’s daughter.
I think I love you.
Glenn Beck.
He’s fearless—has been a game changer!
One member of my short list of personal hero’s is a guy named Kevin Deegan. He’s about 45 and has cerebral palsy. Yet, he rides his bike...everywhere. He has a custom made trike (made by volunteers who raised money for him) Kevin is without a doubt the best known cyclist in Michigan. He rides many of the organized rides and has raised well into 6 figures for different charities. He usually rides 100 miles at a time. Slow and steady.
Oh yea, he can only use one leg and one arm. His controls are all on one handlebar and he pedals with one leg.
This past weekend when I was spending time with the nephews and neices, I couldn't help but think of it as so terribly sad that they don't have any "heroes" today. It's even sadder when I see kids on these YouTube videos singing songs about Obama as if Obama is hero material. The bar has been lowered greatly.
Still wants me to eat food I can't stand but she makes it because her reference is all of us eating her food, except the time my brother cracked a joke and she put it his dinner on his head. Made the joke even funnier and we were all in tears.
Nothing bad to say about us and always wants we want for ourselves and supports our desire to do better.
My Dad who taught me about being a man and dealing with other men as men and brothers. Who also taught me about self determination, my right of defense but and abiding respect for life of all things.
My younger brother, who I admire for growing into a very different man than I thought he would be and continues to persevere.
James Inhoffe who I had the great pleasure of meeting when I lived in Tulsa. He was the Mayor then and always a nice guy. Still, he don't take nothing from no one and defends his positions with passion, reason and intelligence.
There are others of course but he at different times we look to others for inspiration in our live.
Finally, I look to my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, who died for my sins and I don't deserve it.
These days I wonder how I can be more like him.

Jared C. Montoni, Medal of Honor recipient.
He is not alive but my heros all wear, or have worn, a military uniform. Including my father.
All the service men and woman!!
Wow! did you see the post below yours?
Lucky guy.
Recent heroes include Ronald Reagan , Pope John Paul II and Margaret Thatcher for a host of reasons. Pope Benedict is up there because of his conservative message and reaching out to other branches of Christianity without compromising his own principles.
Well said. You do mean ‘Jared C. Monti’, correct?
Guys and Gals who run into burning buildings to rescue people are Heroes.
People on planes who bash cockpit doors in to get at terrorists to stop them from crashing the plane into buildings are Heroes.
Soldiers and Marines and Airmen and Seamen who serve our country are Heroes and especially those that are awarded medals like the Purple Heart the Silver and Bronze stars and the MoH are Heroes.
People who risk their lives to defend the country like Military personnel or their city like many Policemen do are Heroes.
And last but not least Coasties who protect our shores and Especially those the risk their lives going into harms way on stormy seas to rescue those in trouble are Heroes.
Actors and Politicians and Sports Figures I might admire but they are not Heroes unless they laid it on the line as is listed above...
+1 and my brother in Afgahnistan. Still can’t figure out why a guy from navy is in a place they probably have to truck water into.
Being a Dodger fan, I always considered Willie Mays a villain. My heroes included Maury Wills, Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, and Wally Moon.
A hex on you! LOL! Good men.
General James Mattis, USMC.
A several quotes:
“You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn’t wear a veil. You know, guys like that ain’t got no manhood left anyway. So it’s a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them. Actually, it’s a lot of fun to fight. You know, it’s a hell of a hoot. It’s fun to shoot some people. I’ll be right upfront with you, I like brawling.”
When asked about the conduct of Marines in Fallujah:
“I’ve seen the pictures, but I can’t...bad things happened. Generally...in Fallujah, I never saw a Marine hide behind a woman or a child or hold them in their house and fire out of the building. I don’t have to apologize for the conduct of my Marines.”
When asked about the use of computers in warfare:
“Computers by their nature are isolating. They build walls. The nature of war is immutable: You need trust and connection.” He dismissed the net-centric emphasis as “a Marxian view — it ignores the spiritual.”
After sending his tanks and artillery out of the combat area in Iraq after victory in 2004, speaking to local Iraqi civic leaders:
“I come in peace. I didnt bring artillery. But Im pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you fuck with me, Ill kill you all.
My kind of living hero.
That doesn’t even cover it. Sometimes I feel like the king on a chessboard, limping around one square at a time. You know what the queen can do.
Sometimes I feel like a tired pitcher in Game 7 of the World Series. It doesn’t matter if I give up a run in the top of the inning, because when it’s our turn at bat, she’s going to drive the ball into Lake Michigan.
Know what I mean?
Rush Limbaugh
Sarah Palin
Stephen Harper
John McCain
Bob Dole
All of these guys:

Current members of the armed forces of the United States
(to a lesser degree...):
Billy Graham
James Dobson
G. Gordon Liddy
Brett Favre
Peyton Manning
Fran Tarkington
John Riggins
Sonny Jurgenson
George Foreman
Bill Russell
Yogi Berra
Hank Aaron
I’ve never heard of this guy, but the military surely needs more like him and less of those like Weasley Clark.

I want to run this guy for president.
What a wonderful tribute to your wife. You are both blessed to have each other.
Clarence Thomas for his bravery, integrity, intellect and love of country.
My Dad. (Mom too)
My Dad. (Mom too)
My Dad. (Mom too)
george carlin said “if your kid needs a hero or a role model and you ain’t it, you are both screwed.”
Every member of the military are heroes to me.
My mom is my personal hero. She was diagnosed with MS 6 years ago and she never fails to amaze me how she nevers gives up on herself. She never asks for anything. Never gets angry, never complains. Still cooks and cleans, grocery shops, still drives 30 miles to my work just to take me to lunch when I have a bad day, as if I really have anything to complain about. When my dad had heart surgery and 2 knee replacements in 2 years, she’s been right there with him, often helping him walk even when she was gimping back and forth herself.
She’s taught me so many lessons just by being herself and is such an amazing mother, wife, daughter and friend.
your wife sounds lovely and you sir are a class act to give her the credit she deserves. prayers for your recovery and her strength coming your way.
Your wife sounds like my mother when my father was sick.
She’s like that though. She is only truly happy when she is doing something for someone else.
I’m still the king, but she is my queen. In every way.
Your mom sounds like my wife. A lot.
My list of living heros is currently zero and has never had more than one or two.
My last living hero was Desmond Doss but he died a few years back.
This link will tell part of the story of The Conscientious Objector
The rest of the story, often unmentioned, is the ridicule Desmond Doss endured from the soldiers he would later risk his life over and over and over to save.
I strongly suggest you seek additional information and a documentary film by typing his name into your favorite search engine.
Desmond Thomas Doss, Sr., was born Feb. 7, 1919, died Mar. 23, 2006.
We are very blessed to have people in our lives like them. I hope I can be half the person my mom and your wife are. That is a special kind of strength.
This past weekend I saw the movie, “Amelia” about Amelia Earhart.
At the time, she was an international hero. I thought, “Who are the heroes of today?”
All I could think of was Ronald Reagan.
Yep.
It's a tough list to compile, I know. Basically, outside of family, there are very FEW living heroes or icons today.
I'm going to write Mrs. Reagan a letter and reminisce. What an era........!
I will say a prayer for you today.
OTH, your tag line made me laugh.
