I was listening to Fox News on television from the other room this morning reporting on the arrival of the USS New York LPD-21 for a visit to New York City. As I was listening I heard the female news reader say that, "the USS New York was the Navy's newest "Defense Ship."
When did we stop calling them "warships?" Did anybody else hear this? Is this a Fox News thing? Or, is this an "Obama navy thing?" Or did it never happen?
It’s a media thing.
History has it right, and a wheel is a wheel.
Western civilization figured out what works a long time ago. Tried and proven.
Now its being dismantled.
“Defense ships” only have port rudder!
I guess they thought that “Amphibious Assault Ship” might frighten the bad guys....
You don’t need “warships” for “offshore man-caused contingency situations”.
I even heard it called a battleship.
Probably just an FNC dummy. Sounds like something Martha McCallum would say....Yesterday they interviewed a Marine and the caption described him as a sailor. Another segment described the “commanding officer” as if that was his rank instead of his billet. The media, including FNC are still clueless when it comes to the military.
It’s just one little step at a time. Warship becomes Defense. Next we’ll call our military “security force.”
That’s nothing. I heard CBS Radio say that the “pointy end” was made of steel from the twin towers. Apparently CBS thinks their listeners are too dumb to know what a bow is. Or their writers are too dumb.
I can only imagine the hand-wringing that must have been involved when deciding what mission this ship would have. I was not surprised when I saw it was not a carrier or destroyer.
Actually, Governor Pataki requested that a ship bearing the name “New York” be one tasked with direct involvement in the Global War on Terror.
It isn't just military subjects; there are a lot of people in the media that are incapable of distinguishing spit from Shinola. The laughable tragedy of it is that they're utterly convinced that they're way out ahead of all of us hapless rubes.
There is a rare and shining exception from time to time, but in general- I detest media people.
I'm betting on the later.
What have you got against amphibious ships?
This is the second ship of the San Antonio Class??
They went from 17 to 21?
You know, in a pich we could send those to dangerous waters with VTOL fighters sort of like an escort carrier.
FMCDH(BITS)
There’s 18 & 19 that I know of.
I spent a week aboard USS Ogden LPD 5 during Operation Bold Mariner, Vietnam FEB 1969. It’s decomm’ed now, but daughter and I found her in San Diego in some of her last days. Great ship.
So this isn’t the new San Antonio Class??
I am easily confused. lol.

I thought the San Antonio was the only one built so far, I know I’m nuts.
My guess is the person who wrote the article doesn’t know a row-boat from battleship. Whatever the wussy press wants to call it, it is an “Amphibious Assault Ship’’. Or as R.Lee Emrey would say “A whole lot of whup-a$$’’!
