Mind-blowing sex: American woman suffers amnesia after intercourse

The sudden loss of memory, called transient global amnesia or TGA, is caused by pressure in blood vessels in the brain, and can be triggered by strenuous activities, bowel movements, or commonly sex.
The 59-year-old woman, known only as Alice, had the worrying experience after she and her husband Scott had sex last August. She suddenly, albeit temporarily, lost all memory of the last several years and the ability to form new memories.
After sex they turned on the television, which was showing the Beijing Olympics, and she asked: "Is there an Olympics?"
Scott told CNN: "I saw that something was wrong, so I asked her, 'OK what day is it?'"
When she couldnt answer, he asked her to name the current President, to which she replied: "Bill Clinton." Scott called an ambulance and she was taken to hospital, where it was initially thought she may have had a stroke.
(snip)
Although her memory has otherwise returned fully, Alice remains unable to remember the act of intercourse that triggered her attack. However, it is likely that she enjoyed herself.
Dr Caplan said: "It usually is after climax that [TGA] develops."

My first thought was “Sounds like what happened to half the USA after they met Barack Obama”, then I scrolled down and read that she thought Bill Clinton was still President.
Which now that I think of it , would PROVE true amnesia.

This happened to my father and they chalked it up to a “mini-stroke” but they couldn’t find anything in the MRI, makes me wonder if it was the same thing.
I found out it was triggered by martial activity months later when I talked to my mom about dad’s memory loss.
My dad did make a full recovery but it took a few weeks for his mind to sort everything out.

To: markomalley
The exact same thing happened to me.
According to the doctor, during a TGA event, your brain quits processing information. There’s literally nothing retained that can be remembered while suffering an attack.
The last thing I remember is laying down in bed, then nothing....until I woke up on an emergency room gurney. Like the woman in the story, the initial fear was a stroke, but tests eliminated that theory.
Absolutely the strangest thing I’ve ever experienced.

. . .can be triggered by strenuous activities, bowel movements, or commonly sex. . . . I'd like to remind everyone that bowel movements take priority as the years slip past for the simple reason that the other two activities are optional.

And I expect to see an ongoing collective amnesia, of the kind that used to be associated with “the morning after”:
“What did we do last night????Wow, I must have really been
drunk!!” (offered as a explanation for an irresponsible one night stand) Face it,we’re all suffering for the mock-idealis , naivete, and self-righteousness of 52% of our fellow countrymen. They WON’T get that chance again. And the RINO GOP Establishment, under Steele, must be made to understand that it is going to be US who decides on “his” political picks.

Doesn't sound like TGA (Transient Global Amnesia). In order to be TGA it has to resolve in 24 hours. Also, it can ONLY involve recent memory problems. I've had a number of patients with this and it's quite freaky.

My Dad recovered in about 24 hours or so, his memory was a little fuzzy around the edges for about week or two afterwards, but got better.

Well, I have to admit this the first time I’ve heard of this type of thing. It might be comforting for me to say that it expained certain things, but there are sufficient discrepancies that I don’t think it does.
This would be a very inconvenient occurrence, to say the least, if it happened to a pair of people who had just met and didn’t know much about each other... doubly so if one or both of them were married! Try to manufacture explanations...

It's not common, but it's not real rare either. I've seen about 5 patients with it in 20 years in the ER. It's about 5/100,000 population, but goes up to 23/100,000 over age 50.
Here's a nice clinical review of it:
