AP story says Hasan used a "5.7-caliber semiautomatic pistol".
I guess Hasan is a Manly-Man.
Talk about a hand cannon!

Yesterday the media was saying AK-47s, assault rifles, and sniper rifles.
Then again they also said it was definitely NOT a terrorist attack and that he was a recent convert to Islam.

Hmmm...that makes sense. The FN five-seven would give him 20 rds/mag, has very little muzzle flip which means rapid follow up shots, and high penetration.
Apparently it's a lot more lethal than many in the gun crowd give it credit for.

An FN Five-seven is not a gun that the average person would know about. It is an assault machine pistol for killing people with body armor.

LOL! 5.7 inch diameter bullets would be pretty scary. On a serious note, I hate two things about the repporting on this: One, this wasn’t a doctor who cracked and didn’t want to be deployed. If that were the case, he’d just refuse to go and spend a year in jail. This was an act of war by a jihadist and they need to bring up the possibility more often. Two, they are making an obvious effort to only praise the female cop and female soldiers for their heroism yesterday. That female cop, it was reported, had a partner. What happened to her partner. Did her partner remain in the vehicle or did he/she also return fire? Was that tiny female officer shot down without firing a shot or did she actually hit the guy shooting at her (when real bullets are coming your way, especially if already hit, it’s hard to accurately send bullets the other way). This story stinks of “Jessica Lynch” style reporting by the same branch of the military and the media.

"And the ammo is impossible to find!" Absolutely. There was a guy at the range I frequent that had just bought one. He paid well over $1K USD. I've never seen them cheaper than $1K. Very, very weird. It begs the question, how would a presumably novice shooter - described by his family as someone that knew nothing about guns - end up suing such a strange and peculiar weapon?

Weapon + bullet selection + ability to hit what he aimed at tells me he was practiced and prepared.
Methinks a visit to his practice range and his ‘buddies’ there might be very revealing. Who taught him to shoot and handle that weapon? It’s not a like a doc usually wants a lot of range time. hmmmm.
I bet we’ll find he’s been thinking and preparing for this for a long time.
Same for his gun dealer and ammo source(s).

Knowing that the MPs would most likely be wearing body armor, Mohammed bought weapons that he KNEW would have the most devastating impact possible.
So much for his insanity plea in court.

Agreed. WHO sold him that weapon? WHO sold him the ammo?
WHERE did he practice?
With WHOM did he associate at the range.
Can’t imagine this guy could be so calm and accurate without prior practice and training. Army doesn’t provide much pistol training for its psychiatrists, and not with privately owned weapons.

"Apparently it's a lot more lethal than many in the gun crowd give it credit for." IIRC, the round was designed primarily to provide a side arm sized weapon capable of defeating body armor...even though it's a relatively puny pill coming out of the muzzle, I'd imagine its velocity at close ranges produces a formidable degree of hydrostatic shock, and would quite literally allow you to shoot into a crowd of people and wound several with each round due to its inherent penetration.

I think that it is a surprising choice. A .22 cal handgun? It indicates to me that this was a well planned terrorist attack. If someone just “cracked” why would they be using a specialty gun designed to penetrate body armor?

One of our very own Freepers had our shooter in his class at a Texas Shooting Range. He reported it to the FBI. It’s amazing how connected we all are and what a small world it can turn out to be.
Our Freeper saw his picture, recognized him as the guy who’d been working EVERY WEEKEND at his range and been in his six week class training with that very sophisticated weapon. Yup, it’s a small world. It gets smaller when you fool around with those of us who will lay down our lives for this country.
To: Engineer_Soldier
Calm down. I have no doubt that Eric Holder will soon press charges against this police officer who gunned down this poor misguided individual. Obama, I am sure will then instruct Holder that no charges are to be pressed against the man whose gun inadvertently misfired and killed 13 monsters who were about to fight the freedom fighters in Afghanistan..

Do not be deceived. This was no random act of violence or a “Falling Down” incident. This guy was a pro.
To: Blueflag
He's an American citizen (or even if he was only an alien) with a valid driver's license, he could buy that weapon at many local gunstores for about $1k. Ammo is readily available, though rarer than .45 or 9mm.
No reason to go all anti-gun, track down the dealer on this. Unless he eluded any background check, no laws were violated.

NOT a "specialty gun." I have come very close to buying one myself. It is a newer firearm and the very things that made it attractive to me as an American exercising my right to keep and bear arms made it attractive to him.

You miss my intent.
I am anything but anti-gun.
My point is about WHO (of potential interest) provided the ammo and weapon. If a legit dealer sold it, no worries. Was it a legal purchase? dunno.
My point is to follow the trail backwards to see if there are leads.
the trail might lead nowhere, but then again, it might not.
