An army major accused of firing on and killing fellow soldiers in Texas is a US-born Muslim.
The reasons for the shooting are not clear, but Major Nidal Malik Hasan was reported to be unhappy at alleged racial Major Nidal Malik Hasan is a career soldier with some 20 years experience, who had trained as a psychiatrist and treated troops returning from combat.
He is also reported to be a devout Muslim, who attended daily prayers at a mosque and was seen on the morning of the shooting wearing traditional Arabic dress as he shopped for groceries.
His relatives said he had become disillusioned with US military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and strongly opposed his own imminent deployment to Afghanistan.
He had also long wanted to leave the army after suffering harassment because of his religion, they said.
Whatever the motivation, the tragedy at Fort Hood army base highlights the sensitivities surrounding the issue of American Muslims serving in the US armed forces.
Kamran Memon of the organisation Muslims For a Safe America says the subject splits America's Muslim community down the middle.
"Those at one end of the spectrum say we should have nothing to do with the US armed forces as they are involved in wars with our fellow Muslims abroad," he told the BBC.
"Those at the other end say we should definitely serve and help defend our country against those who wish to attack it....

There needs to be a “don’t ask, just tell” reporting system. When a soldier worries about the “committment” of a fellow soldier due to islamopsychosis, it should be investigated.

As someone who used to do background security investigation for the USAF (OSI) I cannot understand how someone of his rank managed to avoid having one done and if so, then someone dropped the ball and either did a lousy job or more than likely, the information they developed about his beliefs was hushed and buried so as to not offend Muslims!

A federal law enforcement official said investigators have not been able to talk to Hasan since the deadly rampage that left 13 people dead and injured 30 others at the sprawling Army post in Texas on Thursday.
The initial investigation shows that Hasan allegedly used only one gun during the attack — a 5.7-caliber semiautomatic pistol.
I hope he checked with the other member first, before speaking to the media.
Their scared? This has to be a joke. The muslims have killed far more Americans inside of America, in foreign embassys, and troops in barracks, in non-combat situations than the reverse. If they are scared, let them go back to the Middle East and live, that way they can live in peace.....joke, joke. For hundreds of years Jews and Christians lived there together but then Islam was founded by a man living in a cave who said he spoke to God and then he got others to believe him.

They must be relieved of duty immediately. The Koran teaches them to do what Hasan did. Once you let the enemy inside the gates, the battle is over. Do we now have to have security within our military bases to protect our soldiers from other soldiers there who might harm them? How asinine! This insanity must STOP!
