It's a shocking and rarely discussed phenomenon. But, according to one of our most respected Asian commentators, it's feeding a cynical industry of plastic surgery and skin-lightening cosmetics...
An acquaintance of mine, Umi, whose family is from India, has skin the colour of dark teak and big black eyes. We are having tea in a small cafe in London. She is agitated because her younger, fairer-skinned sister has had a good marriage proposal, while Umi, who's 28, is still waiting for her Mr Right.
'What did I do wrong in previous life?' she wails. 'I will do anything to change this horrible colour, the round nose.
'And look, just look at this fat, flat Indian face; no bone shape at all. Let's go to a plastic surgeon - if two of us go, maybe we can get a discount. Buy one, get one free!'
This is not some dippy woman with more money than sense. She is a primary school teacher in a large UK city.
So when she suggests this, do I hug her and laugh companionably, or challenge her grotesque desires and values? Where do they come from?
There is no doubt that, even in the 21st century, being white offers to all too many minds a stamp of supposed cultural superiority. But that only partly explains Umi's pathological self-mortification.

take her to visit a trailer park.
Largely down to the racism of their menfolk, who prefer lighter-skinned women....
Its kind of odd really that darke skinned people even use make-up. Its really not an improvement for most of them, even some white girls could do better.
Pretty much gonna have to call out and out Bullshit on that one.

Seems like a few black men think this way too.
I live in a trailer park, what do you want to know?
asked a friend of mine who is black why he got a tattoo in black ink because he couldn’t even see it himself all that good.
As for the question well from where I used to live in a ghetto and on the street every black guy (don’;t know about Asian) said they prefer a white women because they are easy plus take care of themselves . On the other hand they said that black women have anger issues and also a bad attitude.Black women do not like black men going with white women either for the most part.
Sorry liberals this goes against your diversity agenda, actually not sorry
and for you lefty trolls, do not shoot the messenger ,maybe if you lived in a ghetto and got out from the elitist circles you too would find this kind of info on the street.
Personally I prefer the southern European look, that slightly tanned skin though the women in Norway, Swiss and Denmark are beautiful too
Why do white girls, such as myself, desire to have tanned skin?
From licorice to French vanilla I love them all.
slightly tanned is good , a deep tanning is awful.
Black people have so many words for skin color - it's almost obsession. Same with other third world people - lighter is better - much better. It must be why they project on to us an their concern with color - color shade - color intensity - etc. - most white people don't care. Really - when was the last time some white person commented that so-in-so is a shade whiter and therefore better? Never.
Then again, we do talk about that nice golden tan someone got while on vacation... but again, it never signifies superior - just "nice vacation"...
Why do so many white women spend so much money getting TANNED to look DARK?
Why so many white women get those injections on their lips to look so BLACK? Ewwww... They look so odd to have big fat lips on their white faces!
It is so ironic for Asians to want to look like Caucasians and the Caucasians to want to look like whatever they are not.
I am happy and proud of my heritage. My skin is not dark, nor white. Just right, Heh!
I watched “Good Hair” a documentary by Chris Rock on Black Women’s hair culture. I had no idea weaves cost so much and it seems everyone that can(or can’t) afford them gets them, along with the harsh relaxer chemicals. One woman spends $18,000 per year on her hair! And she said that was average!
There were a few segments where Chris Rock was interviewing guys in a Barber shop and everyone to a tee said white women were cheaper (didn’t expect them to pay for their hair) and you could actually touch a white woman’s hair. Big time no-no to do that with anyone wearing a weave.
And of course many white women spend endless hours, lying either in the sun or on tanning beds, trying to make themselves look *less* white (and giving themselves premature wrinkles and often skin cancer). As a pale-skinned white female, I have many times had white acquaintances casually comment “you need to get some sun, you’re *really* pale”. No, actually I’m perfectly happy being the color I naturally am, and have no intention of wasting my time lying around in bikinis fantasizing that my life would be better if my skin was darker.
So you don't look like you're dead?
So you don't look like you're dead?
Not last time I checked, no.
What a stupid article. It answers its question in the first few sentences.
“She is agitated because her younger, fairer-skinned sister has had a good marriage proposal, while Umi, who’s 28, is still waiting for her Mr Right.”
It’s human nature. You might as well ask why a beautiful, thin woman may have more proposals than a fat, older one.
The difficulty is, and I’ve seen it over and over again, that the beautiful woman has a much harder time finding a good “Mr Right”. I’ve been very good friends with several absolutely stunning women, and I can tell you too many of their boyfriends turned into absolute boors and idiots the moment they weren’t being watched by what they considered their trophy prey.
It was quite educational, and a later lesson in politicians, also. LOL.
They aren’t. For heaven’s sakes!
Ergo; poverty stricken areas want more robust women; the hard working chinese treasure small feet that hobble a woman, and Americans like tans the bespeak time at the beach.
I'm sure there are exceptions but it works pretty well.
This has been exactly my observation (speaking as a white woman). I have a black coworker, a very nice and intelligent lady, who constantly puzzles me by bringing up the exact skin tone of her black friends and relatives in conversation. She’ll begin a sentence by saying, “My girlfriend - who’s a VERY light-skinned black lady....”
And that’s important because......? Does she think I’ll get a better impression of the girlfriend if I know she’s very light-skinned? That would be the furthest thing from my mind. Very dark women can be absolutely breathtaking; this Banana Republic model for instance: http://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=26503&vid=1&pid=682073
They were ashamed of their skin color and it was NOT because of what so called ‘whites’ were saying and acting out but because within their own sphere they believe those with light/white skin color were more acceptable.
I WAS shocked and did not know there was this thinking.
There have been studies demonstrating that those considered attractive have individual features most of which approach the average. So I would expect minorities to attempt the average of the society in which they live. Also, I would expect that the younger generations would try to emulate those they consider to be celebrities the majority of whom are white.
Why are some many Republicans desperate to be Democrats?
Gee, does that mean that Michele Obama has agner issues and a bad attitude...Oh, wait....Sorry.....
Twiggy was an exquisite blonde?
Yes, but to have a woman mention "lying around in a bikini" will get the men fantasizing about how that would help *their* life to be better. /sarc>
Cheers!
Glad you did.
Saved me having to call that asinine and typically anti-Western, anti-American, and anti-White multiculturalist propagandist line out and out bullshit.
lol.
Well I doubt you live in that kind of trailer park where Roseann Barr would be normal.
When most women started working indoors and obesity became a problem, thin and tan became the ideal.
In Mexico, the lighter skin comes from the fact that the Spanish were lighter skinned and implemented the class system. Light skin meant more Spanish blood and less Indian blood. For people around the border, it's not that big a deal, in central Mexico, it's a very big deal.
spray on tan is pretty bad
LOL
Good one!
You are correct, my grandmother born in about 1880 on the Texas coast told me that even when they went swimming they had to wear a hot and be completely covered up. Partly it was Victorian modesty but also, she said, because tanned women were lower class and worked out of in the sun.
I questioned why some white men want to be black.
I saw a young girl with a one eyed skull, three stars under it and lighting bolts on the side.
Next week, I going to have to visit that store again, just ask her what it repersents.
African Americans are way more neurotic about skin tone than Europeans, especially African Europeans. I see a lot more bi-racial couples in Europe and, for the most part, people seem okay with their ethnicity. Culture and country on the other hand...
Plus, men are often obsessed with Asian women. I don’t know why they would want to look white.
I have heard this is true in all cultures/races.
I’m pretty sure it doesn’t mean she loves her mom and dad.
Tan lines that's why.
Just the opposite of America, where all the little blonde girls are destroying their skin trying frantically to tan themselves into Pamela Anderson clones. :)
