Dear NASA, I love you, but come on... Monkey radiation tests? What is this? The 50s? Are you going to resuscitate J. Edgar Hoover next? Didn't you guys see Matthew Broderick and Helen Hunt saving the monkeys in Project X?
That's what NASA is planing to do: Use squirrel monkeys to test the possible effect of radiation in humans for long-term space missions. This is the first time the agency is going to test with monkeys since the days of the Mercury Project.

Only if we pack them into missiles and bomb the moon when we’re done with them.

Isn't that how The Hulk was created? Gamma radiation?
Do we really need "hulked-out" monkeys?

It’d be more cost effective and NASA would get fewer complaints if they’d skip the tests and just send the US Congress into space.

I wonder if this kind of testing was already done at places like Oak Ridge.

I say we limit radiation exposure to astronauts by developing much faster propulsion systems.

Yes, in the 60’s- 70’s, they irradiated generations of mice at ORNL in low-level gamma-N fields.
The AF irradiated monkeys and other primates to find the effects of large pulsed doses on bomber pilots and ground troops, this was done somewhere in Southern California at several sites in, I think, the mid 70’s.
Space radiation is different from either of these environments, previous tests probably would not be applicable.
One issue is shielding. When you stop a high energy particle in say, lead, you generate secondary particles and bremsstrahlung radiation that can actually INCREASE the dose to what you are trying to shield. You can also take the primary particle (that would zip right through everything) and lower its energy so that it hits the Bragg Peak as it goes through your pilot’s brain or eye and be totally absorbed (rather than passing through to visit other areas of the galaxy).

Of course it will be very difficult to tell when they become impaired, maybe when they refuse to spend money.
