[Rep. Patrick] Kennedy barred from communion by bishop

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin has banned Rep. Patrick Kennedy from receiving Communion, the central sacrament of the church, in Rhode Island because of the congressman's support for abortion rights, Kennedy said in a newspaper interview published Sunday.

The decision by the outspoken prelate, reported on The Providence Journal's Web site, significantly escalates a bitter dispute between Tobin, an ultra orthodox bishop, and Kennedy, a son of the nation's most famous Roman Catholic family.

"The bishop instructed me not to take Communion and said that he has instructed the diocesan priests not to give me Communion," Kennedy told the paper in an interview conducted Friday.

Kennedy said the bishop had explained the penalty by telling him "that I am not a good practicing Catholic because of the positions that I've taken as a public official," particularly on abortion.

He declined to say when or how Tobin told him not to take the sacrament. And he declined to say whether he has obeyed the bishop's injunction.

In the early days of our nation, you got kicked out of church for a lot less....things like drinking, dancing...

Not too much bias in this bit of journalism. The heroic Kennedy clan against the fanatic bishop.

What? A moral authority holding a politician accountable? UNSPEAKABLE GALL.

Stand by for the shouts of hypocrisy from the left -- the Catholic church has been rocked by its own scandals, which will be the leverage the media will use to try to push back against this stand.

All that is necessary for evil to prevail . . .

Patrick Kennedy; another in the long line of Kennedys who were born on third base and spend their lives thinking that they got there because they hit a triple. How dare a simple church official try to tell him what to do!!!

If the Catholic bishops had done this in the early 1970s, we would not have those faux Catholics like Kennedy working for the Devil.

The Kennedy family long ago ceased to be Catholic. I believe when Rose Kennedy died, the last Catholic Kennedy died. The ones after that are New Age Pagans. They don’t realize when they take the NAP, they are in danger of “eternal second-hand smoke”.

If only ALL the Priests, Bishops, Ministers, etc would flat out kick them out of the church for NOT PRACTICING their “supposed faith” we might have a chance at stopping the healthcare nightmare from a final vote - it would only take about 10 leaders from senators who actually might think twice if voting for abortions in this healthcare would get them kicked out of church.

No kidding. The title says that Kennedy has been "barred from communion"

Folks, he's been excommunicated.

What's the point in giving serial mass murderers communion, when they are not repentant?

OK, Catholic bishops: now go after the other politicians masquerading as Catholics and give them a swift kick in the pants too. There are plenty of them, so get started now!

Our churches keep telling us to contact our senators and representatives about this health care bill. It is time they put the power of the Catholic Church alongside us and publicly denounce the politicians who vote for this! Action by them in the form of excommunication can help stop this bill!

Good point

m And if they get criticized for using the pulpit let them point out that REV Jesse and REV Al do it all the time

"Too bad Teddy wasn’t given the same treatment years ago".

Bishop Tobin should be heralded and rewarded as a hero of the Church.

The Bishops and Priests of Pelosi's and Kerry's Dioceses need to take the exact same measures.
And, yes, the same with the Bishop of Ted Kennedy's Diocese should have taken place, and Kennedy's Mass should have never been televised. That was an embarrassment.

Some Catholics do show "'Abysmal Apathy", as Bishop Tobin has stated.

He's 110% right.

We need all Bishops to speak-out and stand-up in the same manner as Bishop Tobin.

Religion cannot be anything more than a social game to those who won’t accept absolute values. I watched the Methodist Church being overwhelmed by marxists over a span of years, and other denominations have gone even further left. Catholics may hold out longer due to the powerful central role of the Pope.
