Finished 'Going Rogue' last night - and had a few observations. Be interested in reading other FReepers thoughts as well.
1. Loved the book; the story of the Heath family packing up and heading to Alaska mirrors what my father did, and what I did also.
2. I think she was correct in getting her side of the story on her campaign experiences - get it in print unfiltered to the public.
3. No way she endorses Simcox over McCain in Arizona, her admiration and loyalty for McCain goes to the bone.
4. She is definitely running for President.
I admire her even more now than I did before reading it.

I’m on page 80 or so. Like you, I relate to her on so many levels. However the fact that she worked her way through college is lost on the M.S.M. They nuch prefer rich mommies and daddies who pay for their off spring to attend Ivy League Schools. That or Affirmative Action that takes spots away fron kids who worked hard and hands then to the less capable.
The big thing I'm taking away from it right now is that she and Todd worked really hard in the 1980s just to make ends meet, doing some really tough, nasty work.
Also, the reason so many liberal hacks in Wasilla despise her is that when they recruited her to run for the city council, they though they were getting another liberal. Instead, they found they had firmly entrenched a Conservative in their midst who voted against them and screwed up their grand big government plans for the city. Hence, Carny and Stein carry a serious grudge against her, and were the sources of much of the political invective coming out of Alaska during the campaign as reporters rushed to them for comment.
And yeah's she's running...the whole undercurrent of the book is that she believes that God has set her onto the presidential path with the mission of re-establishing limited government and "common sense" Reagan Conservatism within the Nation.
Yeah, just like most of us, she actually had to work her way through college, taking entire semesters off when she did not have the money, which is something that the liberal elite and RINO chatters will never understand.
Yes, and under the current administration's plans it will get worse. My understanding is that at least one version of the health care bill places financial incentives on medical schools to select more minorities. Admissions should be based solely on whether or not you are qualified, not on your skin color, gender, or whether or not you have a ‘legacy’ connection.
I, obviously, can't speak for her, but in reading the book it became clear that she is sincere in her admiration for McCain, and holds him to be a true hero. I just don't get the sense that she would be disloyal to her feelings.
Interesting seeing some of the comments here... I was on the fence about picking up the book, but I am a fan of Palin... I was hoping for more of a “manifesto”, and not just complaints about the campaign trail. So far that is what most reviews have focused on...
I am currently reading it. I grew up in Texas and a lot of what she experienced as a child seems to go along with my childhood. We had to work to get comfort things and we had our garden and animals to tend also. We didn’t have money for college so I joined the military to help pay for it.
I believe she is a very down to Earth person and if the presidential election were held today she would have my vote.
Am reading it slowly - wanting to let the details sink in.
I didn’t know til now that her mom was Catholic but moved into the Protestant side of Christianity, which is where Sarah now takes up “residence” in the Christian family.
That story is on pp 21 and 22.
Also, didn’t know that both her parents as well as Sarah became Marathon runners.
The fact that she was not raised watching the boob tube is very enlightening as well.
She starts the book in the Prolife booth at the State Fair - something that right there auewly drives the death party members crazy.
Just finished reading about her leadership on her High School basketball team her senior year to a Championship despite having what was probably a broken ankle that didn’t keep her out of participating in the final game....which her team won mainly through hard work and wanting to win more than their opponents.
Am enjoying all the details. It is a very refreshing read.
My first impression, just from reading about this much of her life, is that Sarah Palin has “the right stuff” to be our President.
I look forward to reading the rest of this inspirational story.
I would definitely recommend that you read it. Closing chapter(s) cover the political themes. The media reviews (of course...!) chose a few melodramatic snippets to cover, while ignoring 95% of the content.
No way McCain gets my vote, whether she endorses him or not.
I’m not far enough along in it to tell how much of a manifesto it is. However, as I read it, I understand where she gets her guts. She also never has it easy. She usually loses the first time around and learns quickly from those losses. She doesn’t make the same mistakes twice.
What do you call the guy who finished at the bottom of the class in Med School? Doctor!
In a class of rigorously selected applicants even the guy/gal at the bottom of the class might be reasonably competent. Introduce affirmative action and all bets are off.
Bought it as a Christmas present for a relative and plan to read it too.
From the comments here, my thoughts are being echoed: It is a blatant final proof that our country has moved so far away from citizen government to government by an elite ruling class that it is truly frightening.
I too had to work my way through college and built a business by myself. The strength and courage and faith of Americans such as all of us is far stronger than the snobby elitists currently running our country into the ground.
I was struck by what a great TEAM she an Todd are. (hE drove her to a job interview and drove around the lot waiting for her.)
Reading the book now, I can’t put it down. One liners about nylons, broken heals, and antidotes about breast feeding kids even! I know this has been messaged via a writer, but I tell you she is funny to boot. Her solution and explanation of the new tax system/revenue for the State in regards to Gas & Oil is brilliant. No more I don’t want to spoil it for you...
Is there a difference though, in admiration for him as a hero and perhaps on a personal level, and support for his political proclivities?
I do know why I feel such a connection to her. So many of our life experiences parallel each other.
I think a lot of people relate to her in a similar way.
But here is why arch-liberal Maureen Dowd at the NYT thinks people relate to her:

I think her loyalty will trump all else. Which should probably be admired, I suppose.

What I'm becoming amazed at as I read it is the parallels between what was happening in Alaska when she started out and what is going on now. She ran as a Republican, but ran against Republicans. She went after corruption with a vengeance ... and there is plenty of that around today! She basically ran a "change" campaign (as she said, before it was in vogue). She went to the kitchen tables and grass roots ... and if you look carefully, she's doing the same thing right now ... same (successful) strategy and tactics. With the Tea Party Movement out there, she's in a "perfect storm" if it all holds together. I'm still thinking Landslide in 2010 and Palin in 2012. She's obviously a RED-BLODDED American, not a BLUE BLOOD like we've had to vote for in the past.
I "feel" better after a session with the book ... that "says it all" for me. Can't tell you "why" ... just a "good feeling" and there's been a shortage of that lately.
Yes, but that matters little to the poor patient who is misdiagnosed or given the wrong treatment. There is a huge difference among doctors.
I think that “Perfect Storm” may indeed be coming together.

Palins’s appeal is that the people feel that she is a “people” like they are. She has my love, admiration, and vote.

Sarah took the High Road on this matter, and she does not intend to change course.
That is how I interpret it, it is standards she has set for herself, and nothing touchy-feely feelings at all, about it.
But I don't the woman.

Sarah’s been through the wringer already. All of the (supposed) skeletons have been discovered.
She’s seen how a presidential campaign is run from the inside.
And as one commenter has said, “She doesn’t make the same mistake twice.”
I took that differently at first....I thought Dowd was talking about why liberals (like Dowd) are fascinated by her. But of course that would amount to a confession instead of a put down of Sarah's admirers.

Miz Dowd and her fellow travelers are fascinated alright. They want to kill it.
Those who support Sarah Palin relate strongly to, and connect with what she has to say, what she has done in office, and how she has lived her life. She's one of us, writ large.
The Reagan comparison is being ridiculed; of course it is, and how could it be otherwise; but he rose similarly. Humble origins, small college, and had to work his way to what he had and what he achieved. He never lost his sparkle and his wry outlook on life, though.
And, she's like that. We like it, even love it. The left recoils in horror. She's a Rorschach Test for sure, even within the Republican Party. Thats another reason to love her. She outs the pretenders in our midst without even trying, just by being herself.
I don't know what the future holds for Sarah Palin. She's got a tough road ahead, with the entire left, the media and what seems like half the Republican Party aligned against her. But, she has my support, whatever direction fate, God really, takes her in this. If the Presidency is her destiny, I'll be proud to call her Madame President. There are very few women in political life today, about whom I would be willing to say this, and she's one of those very few.
I've just received my copy in the mail yesterday; I'm looking forward to reading it. Will report to this thread when completed.
I finished it yesterday. I wholeheartedly agree: “she’s doing the same thing right now”.
You get the gist of her political thinking and the way she looks at issues. I don’t get where people that want her to go into every detail on policy now are coming from. Her story needed to be told first. If she chooses to run she can go into more detail with a policy book. This is a powerful book that tells her side of things and the media and Demonrat party lose credibility.
I found all of it fantastic and like your final point, YES she is running!!! But I think that the part that really hit home was the final two chapters. If you read nothing else read those two. I was the most incouraged reading that then anything I have seen or heard in the past year. It reminds us that there IS and can be so much hope for the future.
