Man mauled after trying to have picnic with bear in Swiss zoo

A man was just moments away from death as he hung in the jaws of a bear he tried to have a picnic with in a Swiss zoo. But in the end it was the bear who ended up fighting for his life after police shot it in order to save the life of the uninvited intruder into his enclosure.

These dramatic photographs were taken by a visitor to the Bern Park, Switzerland, on Sunday when Finn, a European brown bear aged four, suddenly realised the unwanted human guest in his home.

The 25-year-old man's bid to party with Finn mirrors a similar escapade in Berlin Zoo in Germany on Good Friday this year when Mandy Knobloch, 32, jumped in to swim with the polar bears.

She was severely mauled but rescued before keepers had to open fire on the bears.

Finn was not so lucky. As his massive jaws – capable of crushing steel – and eight-inch fangs that can rip flesh like paper sank into his prey, police had to act fast to save the life of his prey.

Police were left with little option but to open fire, they said. Yet they used a fragmentation bullet, the kind which splinters inside the target.

Finn is critically ill but veterinarians are unable to operate because of the number of splinters caused by the bullet.

Kick butt! I hope the idiot lives in massive pain for his purposeful stupidity.

You can’t blame the bear on this one!

I agree. Let the bear maul the idiot. When the bear is done enough to be lured away, scrape up the remains and give them to the person's family. Saving a lunatic who jumps into a bear enclosure's life by killing the bear is idiotic.

Finn was the bear, not the idiot.

“and eight-inch fangs that can rip flesh like paper sank into his prey”

Uh, I can’t buy this one. Don’t think that polar bears, usually much much larger, are even close to 8”.

8 cm (3 1/2 inches) I could believe.

If you go down to the zoo today
You’re sure of a big surprise.
If you go down to the zoo today
You’d better go in disguise.

For ev’ry bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain, because
Today’s the day the teddy bears have their picnic.

Ev’ry teddy bear who’s been good
Is sure of a treat today.
There’s lots of marvelous things to eat
And wonderful games to play.

Beneath the trees where nobody sees
They’ll hide and seek as long as they please
That’s the way the teddy bears have their picnic.

Picnic time for teddy bears
The little teddy bears are having a lovely time today
Watch them, catch them unawares
And see them picnic on their holiday.

See them gaily gad about
They love to play and shout;
They never have any cares;

At six o’clock their mummies and daddies,
Will take them home to bed,
Because they’re tired little teddy bears.

If you go down to the zoo today
You’d better not go alone.
It’s lovely down at the zoo today
But safer to stay at home.

For ev’ry bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain, because
Today’s the day the teddy bears have their picnic.

It was utterly immoral to harm the bear in this situation. The bear is being held captive by and for the benefit of humans, and one idiot human comes along and decides to do something incredibly stupid and dangerous. The stupid human should pay the price for this, not the innocent and sensible bear. This human should have all his assets and future earnings confiscated until all the bills for the bear’s state-of-the-art veterinary care have been paid for.
