The workers at the Teller County Regional Animal Shelter in Colorado stopped at nothing to revive a frozen kitty who came to them on the last legs of its nine lives.
On a recent snowy Friday morning in Woodland Park, Colo., animal control received a call about a cat that may or may not have been alive under a deck. When they arrived they found the cat nearly frozen to death. According to shelter worker Sharon L. Peters, who told her story to USA Today, the black and white cat's eyes were closed and it wasn't moving. But when it let out the tiniest of squeaks, workers knew they had to do everything they could to save his life.
Over the next few hours, the workers warmed the cat up with heated towels and injected him with fluids to stop dehydration.
Their around-the-clock efforts were rewarded when the next morning the cat began moving around, wobbly at first, but visibly on the road to recovery.
By nightfall it was clear that the worst had passed, and that Icee (as he was named after his ordeal) was going to make it. He began purring affectionately and even eating a little bit.
Now the little black and white cat just needs to find himself a new home, but his battle to make it through -- and the shelter's successful efforts -- gave all the workers at the shelter something to be thankful for this holiday.
Nice story, thanks.
Unthaw? Why’d they want to freeze it?
Yeah. The title sounds like kitty was starting to thaw and they had to re-freeze it.
unfreeze? or defreeze?
Why did you do that to Garfield?
It’s like ravel and unravel; as far as I can tell, they mean the same thing.
So what are the odds they drove over some frozen homeless person in their rush to rescue ‘kitty’? (Just channeling Quentin Tarrantino here.)
Kitty cubed?? sd
Do we bone or debone a chicken? sd
This one may be easy, but I’m confused by it; there are “bulls “ of all kinds of species, like “bison bulls and cows,” etc, but for cattle, are there “cow bulls, “ or would you have to resort to something like “bovine bulls?”
God Bless the people who saved Icee.
Kitty ping?
Kitty ping!
Hope he’s okay a couple weeks from now. Unfortunately, rapid rewarming is about the worst possible treatment for frostbite. Things look good for a couple of days, then things go horribly bad. With people at least, you’re talking about fingers and toes turning pure black, then falling off.
Icee may have been better off being rewarmed with no towels at all, just leave him at room temp. I do hope he (she?) is okay, though. No kitty should be frozen.
Cows are female. Bulls are male. Steers were males at one time. Oxen are steers trained to yoke. No such thing as a cow bull. sd
A cow bull is a bovine bisexual!
Their tail swings both ways!

Rover taught me!

Frosty is a long-haired gray and white male cat around five years old. He is neutered and DECLAWED. Frosty was apparently abandoned in the Metroparks. One of our dogwalkers found him with his tail and back legs frozen to the ground. He was able to be rescued and brought back to the shelter. His nose, tip of one ear, tail and his back feet were frostbitten. Subsequently, more than half his tail had to be amputated, which you can see in his pictures. The hair has since grown in. He is a gentle, quiet cat and probably needs a quiet home where he can be doted on for the rest of his days. For a cat that has suffered as he, he deserves a good home.

Years ago, co-workers found a small kitten in the exact same state as Icee. They rushed it to the vet to thaw it out, etc. The cute little thing came around and lived, but was a feral cat and was very wild. The co-worker couldn’t keep him so I decided to give him a new home. He was domesticated in 3 days and lived a wonderful long life of 14 years. He was the most loving cat I’d ever had.
Poor kitty. Glad he is ok now.
If you “unthaw” something, doesn’t that mean you freeze it?
Just axin’.

I’m always tempted to read stories like this to my two cats, hoping they will show a little more appreciation for just how good they have it living with me. :)

Meh. Journalists.
Wouldn't "UNTHAW" == "FREEZE?" I mean, you "thaw" a frozen turkey...
Mark

I have 1 of those, and it was free!
He looks like he’s wearing a bow tie.
LOVE the picture. Is that kitty yours?
No, found him/her on the web. :0)
No. I'm afraid it should be the other way around.
Nope, sorry. You cats just like ours know us as “staff”.
Very cute! Pictures?
I belong to this one. The one I rescued is on my home page.
The other one belongs to wifey. I guess I need to upload a picture of him too. He's quite handsome.
I’ve got two cats I rescued..had an old white longhair who was a badassed tom...bobcats got him at aged 16 when he couldn’t move like he used to...him I liked...I woke up @ 4 in the morning and realized he hadn’t come to bed like usual and I knew right then he was done for..we found some fur...I actually laid and waited for that Bob to come back...heard later he’d gotten a small dog down the hollow.
normally I don’t like cats and think folks are way silly about them sometimes even though mine sleep with wifey and me or with the kids if they like...even in the crib...screw those silly old wive’s tales
my Dobie died some time back and we’re getting a Scott American Bulldog some time in the next month...gonna be real interesting around here in Kittyville.
Gorgeous! I love orange cats (as you can tell from my profile page!)
Uh oh. Looks like you’ve got a cat problem there!
