103 Confirmed Kills

Was an avid hunter as a kid and joined the Marines in 1967. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during Vietnam and holds the record for number of confirmed kills for Marine snipers, exceeding that of legendary Marine sniper Carlos Hathcock. In just 16 months he killed 103 enemies and another 216 kills were listed as probable’s by the military, only because it was too risky at the time to search the bodies for documents. When he left the Marines he told no-one of his of his role during the conflict and only a few fellow Marines knew of his assignments. It was nearly 20 years before somebody wrote a book detailing his amazing skills as a sniper. Mawhinney came out of anonymity because of this and became a lecturer in sniper schools. He was once quoted saying “it was the ultimate hunting trip: a man hunting another man who was hunting me. Don’t talk to me about hunting lions or elephants; they don’t fight back withrifles and scopes. I just loved it. I ate it up.”

Yes, my McAfee virus alert came on too.

I am sure I read somewhere that the most successful sniper of all time was a Finn with several hundred, maybe a thousand kills against the Russians.

BTW from an article I read years ago by two American researchers on air to air victories, All nations tried to keep accurate records except for one. Any thing the Russians claimed was basically unsupported by facts. I would guess the same would hold true for their snipers tho they obviously had many air to air victories and had snipers who killed.

These “Top” whatever pieces rarely list the criteria by which selection was made.

I am sure that General Sedgewick could attest to the accuracy of some Confederate sniper with a Whitworth.

Photobucket

Was this guy a badass or what? When the Russians heard of a bunch of their guys were being killed they sent in a countersniper. He was never heard from again so they sent in teams of countersnipers. When those turned up dead, they sent in a battalion. The guy was fnally shot in the face but survived. He racked up 705 CONFIRMED kills in less than 100 days.

Carlos awarded my son his Hog’s Tooth last year. And Carlos is still regarded as the best sniper ever.

Just checked. I stand corrected. It was a later sniper. But he was from Vietnam. Carlos died in 1999.

No. 1 on the list: Simo Häyhä (See-mo Haoo-ha). Finnish sniper. About 5' 2". Used a shorter rifle to fit his frame. Iron sights. No scope.

Over 700 confirmed dead Russians, 1940. Took a bullet in the jaw, which didn't kill him, but really messed up his face.

Very Impressive!

In temperatures between −20 and −40 degrees Celsius (−4 and −40 degrees Fahrenheit), dressed completely in white camouflage, Häyhä was credited with 505 confirmed kills of Soviet soldiers,[2][4] and 542 if including the unconfirmed deaths.[4] The unofficial Finnish frontline figure from the battlefield of Kollaa places the number of Häyhä's sniper kills over 800.[5]

Really?
Last year?

He’s been since 1999.

If he really awarded your son LAST YEAR, I’d agree he’s the best sniper since Jesus Christ.
