Mom Arrested For Driving Drunk With Son In Vehicle (.40 BAC)
WCCO.com ^ | 12/16/09 | Caroline Lowe

A 42-year-old suburban mom is in a detox facility Wednesday night after registering a .40 when police stopped her Tuesday afternoon in Inver Grove Heights. A shopper at the Cub Foods grocery store in West St. Paul called police after she saw the woman and her young son in the frozen food aisle.

"He was saying mommy, I want to go home. Let's go home mommy,'" said a woman who called 911. "I went up to her and asked if she was okay and she didn't answer me. She was like stumbling. So, I had my instincts kicked in."

A few minutes later, police stopped the mom in her vehicle on Highway 110, less than a mile from the grocery store.

Police said a field sobriety test showed she was five times the legal limit for someone to be driving. They said she refused to take additional DUI tests and was taken to a detox center.

She could face gross misdemeanor charges for refusing to take the tests and possibly child endangerment charges.

Police are not releasing the identity of the driver as they continue to investigate the case. They praise the citizen for coming forward and calling them before the driver got into an accident.

Te 911 caller was still shaken and did not want her name released. She said she is relieved she was able to get the woman off the street without anyone getting hurt.

"Hopefully, I saved lives by doing this," said the 911 caller.

A veteran Inver Grove Heights officer said he has seen only one other person with an alcohol level registering that high in his entire career.

I think I saw something on the news last night that it would take in the neighborhood of 14 drinks in an hour to get to .40

Many people would be dead before it got that high.

Wow - I used to live right off 110 right where West St. Paul and Inver Grove Heights’ city limits lines are (which is roughly 1 mile from the Cub Foods that I shopped at, presumably the same one of this story). That was about 10 years ago, but it’s still weird to know exactly where this story happened and what the area looks like from memory...

I’m glad no one got hurt and that the citizen called 911 on her...

Yeah, but she never should have been allowed to get to her car. Had I witnessed this, my inclination would have been to talk and walk. Talk to the 911 operator while walking with the woman and then taking her keys from her when she reached her vehicle. At .40, I don’t think it would have been too difficult.....

Too bad someone didn’t think to call someone and stop that mother in New York a few months ago that drove drunk and killed all but one child in her car as well as everyone in the car she hit... last I heard her husband was in denial his wife could have been as drunk as tests showed... driving drunk is horrible, with children unconscionable.

On average, one drink raises your BAC about .02, so a .40 would indicate at least 20 drinks.

A guy I knew in Green Bay drove himself to alcohol rehab class and when asked if he'd had anything to drink, blew a .288 in the breathalyzer.

There was a guy in Juneau years ago with a .47 - he was floating face down in the harbor at the time.

The Irish call it the curse of the drink and after doing a family genealogy project the last two years, I can tell you it’s definitely in the DNA.

taking her keys from her when she reached her vehicle.

And what do you do when she decides to scream “rape”. Many women have some real attitudes here.

With the 911 operator on the line, officially advising you, and with every sound recorded, it should not be a problem.

I saw a guy drink nearly a quart of alcohol and run through a sliding glass door and straight off a two story balcony...and only took a few stitches.

Alcohol is one mean dangerous drug.

And this woman managed to drive to the grocery store? You don’t develop that type of tolerance over night.
