Cop's Two Shots Kill Small Dog
By Nicholas Briano
Police fatally shot a small pug dog in the head last week while responding to a call on a quiet Edgemere block, telling superiors that the dog attacked them outside its Beach 43 Street home.
The incident began at 5:33 a.m. last Thursday, October 26, when Patricia Fernandez, who was already awake and getting ready for work, heard shots fired outside her home located on a quiet deadend street.
According to police sources, patrol cars had responded to the house next door on a child endangerment call.
Prior to the cop's arrival at the home next door, Fernandez's daughter-in-law let their 10-year-old pug, named Frank by the family, outside through the backyard at about 5:25 a.m., something they do with regularity. But with the dog off the leash, and police responding to the child endangerment call next door, Frank, weighing no more than 20 pounds, ran along the side of the house toward the police cars and was shot once in the eye and once in the jaw by an unidentified police officer from the 101 precinct.

I’ve not ever seen a vicious Pug, but I’ll take the officer’s word on it. Tragic situation.
Plugged Pug Ping.
Why did I click on this thread!?!?!?!
Nailing a dog perhaps does not involve the paperwork as from shooting a person, but gives them a rush for shooting something, and is therefore a safe outlet?
Gee, another brave police officer doing his duty. As someone that had the privilege to serve in the capacity as a police officer (for 28 years), I never shot a dog. As a matter of fact, I only fired my weapon once and missed.
The only thing that surprises me about this story is that it didn’t happen in Florida.
Cuz it’s a slow Friday night and the neigbor’s house has been TP’d already? =)
Some cops just want to shoot something!
Clicked on the story and there is a picture of the dog. Very sad, but I don’t think it is a Pug, might be a mix, but it has a snout.
It really seems lately to be some badge of honor for cops when they kill family dogs. I bet they’re yucking it up bigtime behind the scenes about this. Disgraceful.
Do they get merit badges for shooting family pets now?
My precious young Boxer is asleep on the futon behind me as he does every night.
The J B goons may as well put me down too if it happen at my house.
It is easy to sit back and throw shame at the officer’s but I myself have been in low light situation where I have had a dog run at me and if I had a gun I would have done the same thing. Bottom line, keep your dog on a leash. Also, says the folks have a pit bull, which the officers said charged them but of course the owners say the pit bull was in the house (of course it was).
I wouldn’t take a cops word on absolutely nothing!!!
Not that I’m a breed expert, but it looks like a Puggle (1/2 Pug 1/2 Beagle hybrid).
Sad.
Thought this might rate a “I’m going to kick your ass and get away with it” graphic. Or perhaps some Freeper could come up with an “I’m here to shoot your dog” version.
Don’t take the “officers” word for it. “Officers” just love to use their little bang-bangs to kill things they know they can get away with killing.
I’ll take it that the “officer” is a lying sack of crap.
Cops are the second most dangerous group of people in this country.
Nice try! But....
If the pit-bull charged the officer it would be the one that caught the Glock fever!
It's more likely an officer reminded another that a pit-bull lives in the house next door and when the poor little Pug walked around the house, it was free range time on Long Island!
Welcome to the Law Enforcement Hush Puppy Hall of Fame!!
With bonus points for killing a dog under 20 pounds!!
The dog in question is not a pug. Seems to me that the writers of the story are trying to drum up some sense of outrage which obviously most on this post quickly consumed and easily digested. Call me heartless, but I will lose no sleep over this one.
Frank, weighing no more than 20 pounds, ran along the side of the house toward the police cars and was shot once in the eye and once in the jaw by an unidentified police officer from the 101 precinct.
~~~
Did the cop wet his panties when a 20lb. dawg “attacked” him?!
What A Man!!!...
You probably like cats too.
I can certainly see an officer shooting a Pitt Bull that is running towards him...I would shoot it too. Or perhaps a chow, german shepherd, dobie, rottweiler..etc
But a Pug!?
Something is wrong here :-(
I keep tilting my head as I read this story.
"Cop's Two Shots Kill Small Dog" is not a story.
"Small Dog Shoots Cop Twice", now THAT would be a story.
The cops waited 2 hours before “informing” the owners something had happened. That is simply inexcusable.
Sorry!
CA....
As the pit bull doesn't have any bullets in it, I assume the cops never saw it.
I think he's claiming in low-light situations a waddling Pug resembles a charging Pit Bull.
Gotta give the cop kudos though. A doubletap to the face of a Pug at night. Either he's a damn good shot or the Pug was tugging at his toe.
The dog was being a watch dog. He didn’t deserve this kind of treatment for doing what they are supposed to do. This act of terror will come back to bite the police at some point as it is now a real joke to them.
Pathetic cop
One day, I expect to see revenge killings over pet murders. Oh, some will condemn this as an overreaction but when you receive no justice, what are you left with? Especially when so many cops think the badge empowers them to bully a formerly free people and shoot humans and animal companions with impunity.
I fully expect someone’s guinea pig to be stomped to death by some human pig in the near-future. “I was afear’d o’ my life!”
Look at your post,,,
This Moron shot it at close range,,,
The Idiot had to know it was a little dawg to have hit it,,,
My yorkie is a little under 14 lbs.
He's the largest of his breed,,,
This Pug was only 6 lbs. heavier than him,,,
No way this cop thought it was a pit...
Bump Dat!...
Utterly and absolutely bush league. The officers were clearly mediocre policemen and even more mediocre human beings.
If you were being charged by a pit bull and a pug, which one would you shoot twice?
Next time you are called to jury duty , please tell the judge you are a cop groupie so you can be excused and an American citizen can have a fair trial .
“Plugged Pug Ping.”
Note the illiteration here......
Are you Sgt. Friday? ;-)
Both parties have a vested interest in “their version” and both parties more than likely perceived the situation to be just as they described.
When everyone thinks Pug, they think, short, fat, lazy, but
the dog appears to be a Puggle, which while having Pug tendencies, can be more agile, leaner, and larger (heightwise) than a Pug.
Could the dog have given the appearance of being vicious? I'm sure. I've been in contact with Jack Russell Terriers who have really made a nasty bite wound or two. I would never shoot a dog, but I rarely have to worry about dogs being sicced on me either. That being said, there is rarely a situation in which it is necessary to shoot a dog, in my opinion. It is an unfortunate fact of life, though, that those who live outside the constraints of the law do often train their dogs to be vicious. (At which point, I support rehabbing the dogs, but euthanizing the owners.)
Of course, I also do not have a fear of dogs, either. Personally, I'm of the opinion that if you are afraid of dogs, you shouldn't be permitted to be a police officer. That fear can be debilitating, especially considering just how many people own dogs. I had an officer unbuckle his holster and put his hand on his gun because my basenji mix in the backseat was barking and sounded fierce. She would never hurt a fly, but her bark is quite intimidating. I called and spoke to his superior, since I felt as though if he were that frightened, the least he could have done was asked about Daphne. For future reference, I am an attorney with the Department Public Advocacy (Public Defender's office), and do primarily appeals. When I started out, I distrusted all police officers, but as I've matured, I realize that police officers have no higher propensity for being dishonest than those I represent. I am no more deluded into believing that every client whose appeal I handle is actually innocent than I am in believing that every cop planted evidence in every case I've come across. Usually the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
I doubt it weighed even 20 pounds. They are small.
I was merely stating that I have experience in this arena, however, obviously, you are too emotionally invested to have a rational discussion. I am sorry that is the case.
Have a nice weekend. I’m off to make phone calls to the Senate, futile as it may be.
Man, cops love shooting dogs. I’m glad I live where there are few criminals and few cops.
This is just great. You take a poorly written article, and snip it so it is even worse. An officer answering a call in dark of night, shoots a dog running toward him. So? So, it MIGHT have been an individual who was foolish, stupid, fearful, or trigger happy. MIGHT have been. unless we were there, we cannot know. We probably wouldn't know even if we had been there.
But, instead of trying to understand, or, at worst, blaming an individual; we are treated to unthinking hatred and bigotry toward a whole class of people; police officers.
They sure like that stuff.
They roll out for child endangerment but pets be damned!
Imagining the worst motivations of people in uniform who are trying to hold back the hordes of Barbarians on both sides of our gates. Do you "support our Troops" by doing the same to them?
No doubt, there are people of various degrees of "badness" in the police. It is a very bad thing that this is so. The only way to make this situation better, is to concentrate our anger against the ones who deserve it, not against ALL.
Don't imagine that ALL of "the Troops" are angels, either. There are fools, thieves, liars; and rapists and murderers, too. Not very many, but any is too many. The leftist radicals imagine/pretend that the majority are bad. Should we do the same regarding the police?
No. We should be ashamed of our irrational bigotry.
